Table of Contents
Grim Batol is a dungeon that was originally added in the Cataclysm expansion. But in The War Within, it was reworked, and some mechanics were changed. However, we will explain every ability and all mechanics in this guide.
We won’t be discussing trash enemies on the way to this dungeon bosses. Here, we tried to focus on essential and challenging mechanics you will face during boss fights in Grim Batol on Mythic and Mythic Keystone difficulty. We hope that our guide will be helpful to you and will improve your gaming experience.
Grim Batol dungeon entrance
Grim Batol is a dungeon in Twilight Highlands of the Eastern Kingdoms at /way 19.2 54.3 coordinates. You can travel to the Twilight Highlands from Dornogal using the portal at /way 53.7 38.7 coordinates.
Let’s dive into the mechanics and tactics against all four bosses in this M+ dungeon.
Grim Batol Mythic plus bosses
General Umbriss
Here is General Umbriss, Grim Batol Mythic plus boss guide:
Commanding Roar
During the boss fight, General Umbriss will perform Commanding Roar, damaging all players and calling for Twilight Drakes’ help. Three drakes will use Shadowflame Breath, making 3/4 (in total) of the arena lethal to be in. Your group has to move to the only safe line quickly. Be sure to use movement speed boosts so everyone makes it in time. We also recommend always returning to the center of the arena after this mechanic. This way, you will avoid situations where the safe line is on the opposite side.
Rumbling Earth
Each odd Shadowflame Breath is followed by a Rock Spike cast from General Umbriss. This debuff affects three random players, exploding with AoE damage and knocking them forward. This spell leaves a Rumbling Earth area underneath the players’ original position. These hazardous zones deal damage and slow anyone inside. Considering that Rumbling Earth exists for 2 minutes, players need to manage this mechanic wisely. We recommend starting on the left or right side of the arena and slowly moving in the opposite direction during the fight. Try placing Rumbling Earth puddles perpendicular to Shadowflame Breath lines. This way, you will always have enough space to handle Twilight Drakes’ attacks.
Tank combo
General Umbriss has a heavy stacking Tank combo. Each even Shadowflame Breath is followed by Skullsplitter. This ability deals high damage and applies bleed. Be sure to use defensives and, if possible, try to remove the bleed effect (by Stoneform, Cauterizing Flame, etc.).
Forgemaster Throngus
Here is Forgemaster Throngus, Grim Batol Mythic plus boss guide:
Weapon rotation
Forgemaster Throngus will swap weapons during the fight. The rotation is always the same: Axe -> Sword – > Mace. Each weapon has unique attacks and changes the fighting tactic.
Axe
During axe usage, Throngus can perform Fiery Cleave attack. This is, obviously, a cleave, so the Tank has to face the boss away from the group. This ability deals high damage, so use defensives and strong healing abilities. Fiery Cleave also leaves Molten Pools of molten metal that will most likely remain until the fight’s end. We recommend moving Throngus near the walls or existing molten metal areas, as it simplifies Molten Pools’ disposal.
Sword
During sword usage, Throngus will perform Molten Flurry attacks against the Tank. The Healer has to be extra attentive during this phase. These attacks also apply the Molten Spark debuff to a random player. This debuff consists of 6 seconds of DoT and Molten Pools’ eruption upon expiration. If you become a target of this spell, leave Molten Spark Pools near other hazardous areas. It can be necessary to use defensives or strong healing options (and even potions).
Mace
Upon entering the Molten Mace phase, Throngus becomes a real menace to the Tank, as his melee damage is increased by 1000%. Thankfully, he also becomes slowed by 50%. This phase lasts 10 seconds, which means that the only right tactic here is to kite him. Keep in mind that during Molten Mace state, the boss drops Molten Pools everywhere he steps. So be sure to kite him near existing puddles.
Group damage
Each weapon swap is followed by a Blistering Heat cast. It deals heavy damage to all players and can be fatal if met unprepared. We recommend using defensives and strong healing spells during this intermission.
Overall tactic
As this boss fight is concentrated on managing Molten Pools’ zones, players must pay extra attention to their movement. Always try to save safe space and do your best to pack molten metal pools closer to each other. We recommend using a spiral movement style, starting near the walls of the arena and twisting a puddled pattern towards the center. This tactic will give you the most time during this fight before you feel your legs burning.
Drahga Shadowburner
Here is Drahga Shadowburner, Grim Batol Mythic plus boss guide:
Invocation of Shadowflame phase
Shadowflame bolt
This is the most straightforward mechanic of this boss. Drahga will cast a Shadowflame Bolt on the Tank, dealing a serious amount of damage. Be sure to interrupt these casts in time to simplify the life of your Tank and Healer.
Adds
After casting Invocation of Shadowflame, Drahga will summon a portal somewhere in the arena. This portal soon erupts, dealing AoE damage and spawning an Invoked Shadowflame Spirit. This add Fixates on a random player and starts chasing it. This chase can end fatally for your group if the Invoked Shadowflame Spirit reaches his target. Your group has to kill this add ASAP, using CC, slows, etc., while the targeted player stays away. Otherwise, Shadowflame Spirit will perform Shadowflame Nova upon touching his target and wipe your party.
Single target burst
Occasionally, Drahga will debuff three players with Curse of Entropy, applying a heavy DoT, healing absorption, and reducing movement speed. This curse lasts 20 seconds, making it lethal if not removed soon enough. Be sure to dispel it, use freedom effects (such as Blessing of Freedom, Druid form swap, etc.), or even heal through absorption. Keep in mind that if Invoked Shadowflame Spirit targets the player, the slow from the curse can interfere with kiting. So remove the debuff from targeted members of the group ASAP. Don’t hesitate to use your defensives if you assume that removing this debuff will take time.
Valiona phase
Once Drahga reaches 0 HP, he will jump off the arena and soon return on Valiona’s back. But remember that this time, you only have to bring the boss’s health to 50% to call it a victory.
Keeping pace
During this phase, most of the previous abilities will stay. Drahga will still debuff players with Curse of Entropy and cast Invocation of Shadowflame. But this time, there will be two portals that summon Shadowflame Spirits. They behave identically to the first phase, so be sure to kite and focus them with even more precision.
Knockback
Valiona will sometimes use Twilight Buffet against your party, knocking you back and leaving Twilight Winds where you land. These damaging and slowing winds will continue moving chaotically and will most likely remain till the end of the fight. Be sure not to get knocked off the platform or into adds claws.
Frontal attack
Just after using Twilight Buffet, Valiona will perform a Devouring Flame, charging a frontal attack in a cone area. As a Tank, make sure that you don’t get knocked back into a bad position. Face the boss away from the group so that you are the only one dodging this frontal. This attack takes some time to charge, so run out of the zone in time.
Erudax
Here is Erudax, Grim Batol Mythic plus boss guide:
Stunning tentacles
Periodically, Erudax will use Void Surge, dealing a few pulses of damage and spawning Void Tendrils. These tentacles are stationary but will impact any player touching them with Depth’s Grasp, dealing damage and stunning the target. If you want to clear the arena from them, you can use some immunes (such as Divine Shield, Aspect of the Turtle, etc.).
Shrinking of the space
After each Void Surge cast, Erudax will use Shadow Gale. This ability will turn the arena into a damaging zone with a small safe area near the floating eye. He will also apply Abyssal Corruption upon three players, creating damaging AoE areas around them. Do your best to spread in the safe area while not bumping into tentacles so that your teammates don’t suffer from the AoE damage. Do not hesitate to press your defensives, and for the Healer — keep an eye on your DPSs’ health bars.
Adds
After Void Surge ends, Erudax will use Void Infusion, corrupting eggs and summoning Mutated Hatchlings. These adds must be killed carefully, as they apply Shadow Wound to your group upon dying. This stacking debuff increases received damage and can be lethal if overlapped with Void Surge cast. So try to kill them after the next Void Surge is over, or use your defensives and strong healing abilities.
Tank crush
Soon after Void Infusion cast, Erudax will perform Crush against the Tank, dealing great damage and knocking it back. Be careful not to land into Void Tendrils and use your defensives to survive.
