Midnight gearing aligns with the Gear Track system: the more difficult the activity, the higher the quality of gear earned. The table below provides a reference.

Now with the basics done, let’s proceed to the most optimal Midnight release gearing strategy. Luckily for you we’ve got a special scheme that will help you work around your Midnight gearing.

Gear categories and item level range

In World of Warcraft, gear is divided into different categories, each with its own item level range and specific sources. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

The standard Season 2 ceiling is therefore item level 334 Myth 6/6. Certain special endgame items or future gear can exceed that ceiling, with Myth-equivalent rewards reaching item level 344.

Midnight gearing key differences

As you may have already noticed, gearing in Midnight has received several major changes. Here’s what you need to know.

• Explorer track gear is removed: You now begin your progression with Adventurer gear, and items from previous tiers can no longer be upgraded. This streamlines gearing but makes early progression more direct.
• Crests amount required for upgrade has increased: Upgrade costs have increased due to the removal of the Valorstones currency in the Midnight expansion. Crests are now your primary upgrade resource, making them more valuable than ever..
• New activity – Prey: Prey is a new overworld activity that rewards Heroic-tier gear. It’s a solid option for gearing alts or secondary characters, though less essential for main character progression.

You may wonder how many Crests are now required for upgrades. Here’s the new cost structure:

• 1/6 -> 2/6 = 10 Crests
• 2/6 -> 3/6 = 20 Crests
• 3/6 -> 4/6 = 30 Crests
• 4/6 -> 5/6 = 40 Crests
• 5/6 -> 6/6 = 50 Crests

As expected, the Great Vault, item upgrade vendors, and the Catalyst are now located in Silvermoon.

Bountiful Delves

In Midnight, Bountiful Delves are a great way to farm decent gear, comparable to Mythic+ and even raid items in terms of ilvl. This is because your progress in Bountiful Delves upgrades the Great Vault with better rewards.

Just like Brann in TWW, Valeera is here to help you in Midnight Delves. The best part? It’s a solo-friendly activity. While Bountiful Delves don’t drop Mythic-track gear, they’re perfect for early expansion leveling.

Regular Season 2 Delve tiers are available during the pre-season period, while Bountiful Delves and Keys become available when Season 2 officially begins.

Tier 8 is the important Great Vault breakpoint. Going beyond Tier 8 increases difficulty and can improve secondary rewards, but the standard Great Vault reward remains item level 305 Hero 1/6.

Prey gearing

Prey receives a full Season 2 refresh with new bosses, new Torments, Coiled Isle Hunts, a new Preyhunter’s Journey, and a higher weekly Hunt cap. The weekly cap rises from 12 to 15 Hunts.

More importantly for gearing, Prey does count toward the World row of the Great Vault in Season 2.

Your first two Hunts on each difficulty every week reward a Preyseeker’s Chest containing gear.

Further completions provide currencies, gold, profession materials, and Journey progress instead of another normal Preyseeker’s gear chest. Nightmare is therefore the major Season 2 gearing target because it awards Champion 1/6 gear directly and can produce Hero 1/6 rewards in the Great Vault.

Mythic plus dungeons

Mythic+ remains one of the most important gearing systems in Midnight Season 2 because it provides farmable Hero-track gear, Myth Mistcrests, and powerful Great Vault rewards. The Season 2 dungeon rotation includes:

• Altar of Fangs
• Murder Row
• Den of Nalorakk
• The Blinding Vale
• Voidscar Arena
• Kings’ Rest
• Temple of Sethraliss
• Ruby Life Pools

The main gearing breakpoints are:

• +6: Hero-track gear begins dropping directly.
• +9: Myth Mistcrests begin dropping.
• +10: End-of-run gear reaches its maximum standard item level of 311 and the Great Vault reaches item level 318 Myth 1/6.

Midnight raid gearing

The primary Season 2 raid is The Venomous Abyss, an eight-boss raid located on the Coiled Isle. The raid opens with Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1 at the beginning of the Season 2 raid week.

Normal therefore spans Champion 1/6 through Champion 4/6, while Heroic spans Hero 1/6 through Hero 4/6. Mythic starts at Myth 1/6, but the final two bosses are special: The Coiled Altar and Ula’tek drop item level 344 gear, equivalent to Myth 9.

Tidebound Grotto Lair gearing

Patch 12.1 also introduces Lairs, a new raid-like activity. The first is The Tidebound Grotto, featuring Nymrissa Wavecaller. Lair bosses count toward the Raid row of the Great Vault, making the activity relevant even for players primarily interested in gearing.
