The War Within 1-80 leveling guide
How to gain more XP
With your first walkthrough done, the War Within campaign quest is no longer tied to the story. Your alts can start in whatever zone you like, thanks to Adventure Mode.
Adventure Mode lets you replay the main campaign for experience in any order you like or use other activities and completely ignore it. You must complete the Main Scenario only once to open all the content locked behind it for all the characters in your Warband. Getting a Warband member to level 80 grants a 5% received experience boost for all other characters, stacking up to 25%. This will speed up getting multiple characters to the cap. We looked closer at alt characters’ leveling and skips in our The War Within Skips and World Quests for a faster alt-leveling article.
Warband bonus XP
Since we have mentioned Warbands, their additions allow you to plan your experience gains more efficiently. Having Reputations shared between characters lets you do the sidequest on different alts instead of the main. That way, you won’t be wasting all the experience they give while still getting access to Reputation and rewards behind them for your main character.
Warmode
If you are feeling brave, you can turn on War Mode. War mode is a PVP system introduced in Battle For Azeroth. It allows you to fight with the enemy faction. As a bonus, you’ll get a scaled XP bonus, depending on your faction number. Depending on how many players of your faction are playing against the enemy’s faction players, XP scales from 10 to 20 percent. Just be aware that your character will be in PVP mode. Therefore, your character may end up fighting an enemy player.
Event XP buff
Sometimes, there will be events, mostly during holidays. Those events provide a neat 10% XP buff for your character. Some of them even stack with each other. As mentioned, those events can be divided into holidays, like the Midsummer Fire Festival (with its Ribbon Dance). And, of course, you shouldn’t forget Darkmoon Faire with its iconic WHEE! buff. Those events usually don’t take much time and can be fun, so don’t skip them.
Turbulent Timeways event XP buff
With the addition of the Turbulent Timeways event, leveling has never been easier or faster. The Distilled Knowledge of Timeways buff lasts up to 2 hours and stacks with itself. Upon reaching 4 stacks of Knowledge of Timeways it transforms into Mastery of Timeways buff which lasts for 3 hours. You can refresh Mastery of Timeways buff with another Distilled Knowledge of Timeways. You get 1 Distilled Knowledge of Timeways for each timewalking dungeon completed.
The important thing to note is that you need to activate the Distilled Knowledge of Timeways on newer alts. Level 80 characters get this buff automatically.
The best ways to level from 1 to 80
You can quickly level your character in under 8 hours with some preparation time.
Preparations
To start grinding XP, we need to prepare some things. The first thing you need to do is decide who to level. Some variants, like Allied Races and non-Evoker Dracthyrs, can start at level 10 and skip those levels altogether. Another thing you need to consider is getting heirlooms and upgrading them to level 70. You can equip heirlooms from level 1, and they will scale with your level, so you won’t need to change your gear.
Another thing that gets you more XP is Warband buff; every time you level up your character to 80, you get 5% buff, scaling up to 25%. This means that people with more 80-level characters will level up faster overall, so consider this. You can focus first on your level 70 alts and, after getting a maximum buff level up, your low-level alts.
Another thing that will give you an advantage in leveling character is the potion Draught of Ten Lands. This potion will provide you with a 10% XP buff but is only usable up to level 49. However, if you use it right before hitting level 50, the effect will persist for one more hour. To buy Draught of Ten Lands, you either need to visit Boralus if you are an Alliance player or Dazar’alor as a Horde player. The vendors are Provisioner Stoutforge [66.88, 25.78] in Boralus for alliance and for Horde Provisioner Mukra [51.2, 95.2]. Potions are sold for service medals, currency that drops from various BFA activities. The price is five service medals for each potion; buy them if you can and stack up on them.
Before other event buffs, you should focus on
The levelling
Now, with all of these XP buffs, you can begin. If you picked a race that starts on level 10, we highly recommend you do Exile’s Reach. It is an updated beginner zone where you can speedrun your leveling from 1 to 10 in under an hour. After that, do a preparation routine, and you can start leveling from level 10 to 20. You can take different routes; you can either start spamming timewalking dungeons or begin doing Legion quests. Just go to Chromie and select Legion timeline. If you see any Legion invasion going, complete these world quests to gain even more XP.
Starting at level 20, you can select to play in Warmode to gain even more XP. We highly recommend that you begin doing a Cataclysm timeline after hitting this milestone. Just go to Chromie again and select this timeline. Quests in the Cataclysm timeline are often quick to complete and are located close to each other, so you will soon have level 49. When you are about to get level 50, remember to consume one last Draught of Ten Lands if you have one.
From level 50, selecting the Draenor timeline with Chromie would be quicker. Regardless of your faction, do intro quests; they are easy to complete and take little time while rewarding you with a lot of XP. Keep questing until you set up a garrison, and then you can start Gorgrond location and do quests here; do them up until hitting level 70. When hitting level 70 Chromie timelines end and you will be forced to do War Within content or do dungeon spamming.
Levels 70 to 80 take the most amount of time. The best method is completing timewalking dungeons. But if you are tired of dungeons, you can begin doing War Within quests in Hallowfall and complete Delves. It’s up to you to decide in which zone you want to level, but always try to complete Delves. Their quests offer a large amount of XP.
If you need to be more active about questing, timewalking dungeon spamming is the best way to level. It is especially effective if you’ve got friends or a leveling group to accompany you. Also, it would be best to queue up as a Heal or Tank role to speed up the queue and find more dungeons. And considering Turbulent Timeways event 30% buff, this is the most efficient strategy. With this method, you will probably end up with level 80 in 8 hours or even less.
Note that you get the completion XP boost only when you complete dungeons. Ignoring optional bosses to complete these dungeons faster and get more XP overall would be wiser. Also, note that you can start spamming timewalking dungeons since level 10.
We understand that not all players enjoy dungeon-spamming, so we will dive deeper into other methods while leveling through 70-80 later in an article.
Alternative leveling methods
You can approach leveling in World of Warcraft: The War Within in different ways. Questing, dungeons, and, of course, the newly added Delves. Each way has its pros and cons, so we will look at them in detail.
Main Story quests
The main story of the War Within expansion presents a campaign made of 12 chapters split between 4 new zones. Doing these quests grants a big bulk of experience required to reach the cap and grants access to many new things and content.
You can always focus on the main story quests, but completing them with your first character leveled and geared up is no longer needed. You can access all the locked content and endgame alts through Adventure Mode.
Side story quests
Aside from the main story quests, each zone has a plethora of other quests. It may be a single task, short storylines, etc. These also provide experience alongside other rewards, such as gear, consumables, Reputation, etc. They are not required to complete the story, but clearing a zone of these may also grant a level or two. With Warband, you will no longer be wasting the experience from this on your main since you can do the quests on alts and still receive shared Reputation and rewards.
Another notable mention is World Events. These side quest-like activities happen as you travel the zones and enter the designated areas for such an event for the first time. Such events have simple objectives, requiring killing mobs or gathering items in an immediate area. As a result, they provide a hefty exp reward and sometimes offer something more. So keep your eyes on these.
Dungeons
Dungeons are usually the fastest way to gain levels to the cap quickly. Before choosing dungeons as your primary way of leveling, you have many factors to consider.
The effectiveness of dungeon spam is reliant on precise time. The faster you clear the dungeon, the quicker you can queue for another one. The speed mostly depends on your group DPS. You want players who press buttons in a proper rotation and pump that damage. Sadly, chances to get such players in your group are pretty slim when you get randoms from Dungeon Finder.
Since we mentioned Dungeon Finder, we should talk about queue times. They are almost nonexistent for Tanks and Healers, but DPS players may have to wait longer. However, since The War Within just came out, many players use Group Finder. Hence, the wait time for dungeons is relatively short for any role.
Despite all the above, dungeons remain one of the fastest 70-80 leveling. You can use the following to incorporate dungeons into your leveling routine.
- Find a dungeon spam group. Many players want to level through dungeons. You only need to find them. Search for these people in Looking for a Group or in your Guild. One thing to notice is that players love to be carried but dislike carrying someone else. Make sure to do your best and strive for the quickest clears.
- Bring a friend or two. Bring a friend or two with you if you prefer to use Dungeon Finder rather than commit to intimidating dungeon spam. Someone you can rely on. Any combination of roles is fine as long as it is not all DPS. That way, you will have a quicker time finding a dungeon.
- Do the daily random dungeon. If you are not a fan of dungeons but still want to get some of that sweet experience, do a daily random dungeon. This way, you can receive an extra experience reward from a typical run, and your interaction with this content will be as minimal as possible.
- Do dungeon quests. Each new dungeon has a quest or two that requires you to complete these dungeons and/or do some extra objectives there. So you should do these quests and complete every new dungeon at least once.
Delves
A new challenger appears! Delves are the type of content newly introduced in the War Within. They are dungeon-like instances with their own progression system and variables that make every walkthrough unique and different. Delves is supposed to be another form of PvE endgame content, similar to Raids and Mythic+.
What matters to us now, however, is that Delves can be used to level up your characters. Despite being designed for end-game, early Tiers are accessible as you open the corresponding Delve.
Another notable feature is that you don’t need help from other players to finish Delves. You can run through Delves solo with only an NPC companion by your side, whose main focus is on healing or providing additional damage.
Delves have more features, such as gear, seasonal rewards, companion upgrades, etc., but that is another topic that you can explore more in our Comprehensive The War Within Delves guide. We consider Delve spam to be one of the fastest ways to level in WoW: The War Within.
Conclusion
We recommend timewalking dungeon spam; with the proper setup, it is the fastest leveling TWW. We also understand it’s only an option for some. Since it depends too much on the other players, here is another way you can level your alts.
With Adventure Mode and increased EXP from your level 80 main, you can send each alt to zones and do a complete clear. This means doing every main story quest, every side quest, world event, dungeon, and Delves. Doing so will contribute to the Loremaster achievement and add every quest-related Reputation gain to your Warband. And if you still need some exp for that alt, you can finish it with delve or dungeon spam. Remember, each level 80 character adds a 5% bonus to the received exp up to 25%.
And if you want to do it solo and fast. You can go for solo Delves spam until you fill-up the XP bar.
