Table of Contents
The War Within Early Access starts soon. Players can finally experience all the wonders of the new World of Warcraft expansion. This means, among many other things, players have to raise their characters to a new level cap — Level 80.
With that in mind, we at WowVendor created the War Within leveling guide. With it, you can learn all you need about leveling in War Within. That includes info about new systems, Warbands, XP requirements, various tips, tricks, the fastest way to get XP in the War Within, and much more. Without further ado, let’s get started.
The War Within 70-80 leveling guide
How many XP do you need to reach level 80 in The War Within?
First, reaching a maximum level of 80, assuming you start at the current cap of 70, requires a total of 2,481,285 XP. Sadly, finishing the expansion main campaign is not enough to level your first characters. You have to complete other side activities as well to reach the cap.
It takes about 10 hours to reach a new level cap playing solo. It is faster doing dungeon spam with a capable group.
War Within campaign structure and Warband benefits
The main campaign covers 4 new zones. For your first walkthrough, the War Within campaign order is fixed, as each zone has its story tied into one Main Scenario for the expansion. Your alts can ignore that restriction thanks to Adventure Mode.
For alts, you can use Adventure Mode to replay the main campaign for experience in any order you like, or use other activities and completely ignore it. You must complete the Main Scenario only once to open all the content locked behind it for all the characters in your Warband. Getting a Warband member to level 80 grants a 5% received experience boost for all other characters, stacking up to 25%. This will speed up getting multiple characters to the cap.
Since we have mentioned Warbands, their additions allow you to plan your experience gains more efficiently. Having Reputations shared between characters enables you to do the sidequest on different alts, instead of doing them on the main. That way, you won’t be wasting all the experience they give, while still getting access to Reputations and rewards behind them for your main character.
How to level up faster in TWW
There are different ways you can approach leveling in World of Warcraft The War Within. Questing, dungeons, and, of course, the newly added Delves. Each way has its pros and cons, so we will look at them in detail.
Main Story quests
The main story of the War Within expansion presents a campaign made of 12 chapters split between 4 new zones. Doing these quests grants a big bulk of experience required to reach the cap and grants access to many new things and content.
We advise you to focus on the main story quests first with your main character. Completing it will grant access to it for your alts through Adventure Mode, which will open all the locked content and end-game. But as we mentioned before, for the 70–80 journey, doing only the story won’t be enough.
Side story quests
Aside from the main story quests, each zone has a plethora of other quests. It may be a single task, short storylines, etc. These also provide experience alongside other rewards, such as gear, consumables, Reputation, etc. They are not required to complete the story, but clearing a zone of these may also grant a level or two. With Warband, you will no longer be wasting the experience from this on your main since you can do the quests on alts and still receive shared Reputation and rewards.
Another notable mention is World Events. These side quest-like activities happen as you travel the zones and enter the designated areas for such an event for the first time. Such events have simple objectives, requiring killing mobs or gathering items in an immediate area. As a result, they provide a hefty exp reward and sometimes offer something more. So keep your eyes on these.
Dungeons
Dungeons are usually the fastest way to gain levels to the cap quickly. Before choosing dungeons as your primary way of leveling, you have many factors to consider.
First, dungeons are harder than any other leveling content in the game. This is especially true in The War Within, as Tanks’ survivability was nerfed across the board to ensure healers had something to do in the dungeons. This resulted in the increased players’ skill requirements, as tanks no longer felt like unkillable machines that needed some healing from time to time. Now, both Tanks and Healers have to pay more attention. It doesn’t mean we are back to the content difficulty of Cataclysm, but dungeons will be harder than in Dragonflight.
The effectiveness of dungeon spam is reliant on clear time. The faster you clear the dungeon, the quicker you can queue for another one. The clear speed mostly depends on your group DPS. You want players who press buttons in a proper rotation and pump that damage. Sadly, chances to get such players in your group are quite slim when you get randos from Dungeon Finder.
And since we mentioned Dungeon Finder, we should talk about queue times. They are almost nonexistent for Tanks and Healers, but DPS players sadly have to wait. At the start of the expansion, the situation is extreme, you can wait more than half an hour for a dungeon.
Despite all the above, dungeons remain one of the fastest 70-80 leveling. You can use the following to incorporate dungeons into your leveling routine.
- Find a dungeon spam group. Many players want to level through dungeons, you only need to find them. Search for these people in Looking for a Group or in your Guild. One thing to notice is that players love to be carried, but dislike carrying someone else. Make sure to do your best and strive for the quickest clears.
- Bring a friend or two. If you prefer to use Dungeon Finder rather than commit to intimidating dungeon spam, bring a friend or two with you. Someone you can rely on. Any combination of roles, as long as it is not all DPS, is fine. That way, you will have a quicker time finding a dungeon.
- Do the daily random dungeon. If you are not a fan of dungeons but still want to get some of that sweet experience, do a daily random dungeon. This way, you can receive an extra experience reward from a normal run, and your interaction with this content will be as minimal as possible.
- Do dungeon quests. Each new dungeon has a quest or two that requires you to complete these dungeons and/or do some extra objectives there. So you should do these quests and complete every new dungeon at least once.
Delves
A new challenger appears! Delves are the type of content newly introduced in the War Within. They are dungeon-like instances with their own progression system and variables that make every walkthrough unique and different. Delves is supposed to be another form of PvE endgame content, similar to Raids and Mythic+.
What matters to us now, however, is that Delves can be used to level up your characters. Despite being designed for end-game, early Tiers are accessible as you open the corresponding Delve.
Another notable feature is that you don’t need help from other players to finish Delves. You can run through Delves solo with only an NPC companion by your side, whose main focus is on healing or providing additional damage.
Delves have more features, such as gear, seasonal rewards, companion upgrades, etc., but that is another topic that you can explore more in our comprehensive The War Within Delves guide. We consider Delve spam to be one of the fastest ways to level in WoW the War Within.
Our recommendations
For your main
For your main character:
- Focus on finishing the main story campaign. That way, you will have access to various features of the expansion and Adventure Mode for alts.
- Complete each new dungeon and its corresponding quests.
- Complete all side quests in one of the zones. We recommend either The Ringing Deeps or Hallowfall.
It may not be the fastest way to get to level 80 in The War Within, but it’s the most rational one. This should be enough to make sure you finish the main story quests roughly the same time you hit 80. If you still lack some experience, do a random daily dungeon. Or some World Events along the path of your main story quests.
For your alts
As for alts, we recommend dungeon spam, as with the right setup, it is the fastest leveling TWW. We also understand it’s not an option for everyone. Since it depends too much on the other players, here is another way you can level your alts.
With Adventure Mode and increased EXP from your level 80 main, you can send each alt to zones and do a complete clear. This means doing every main story quest, every side quest, world event, dungeon, and Delves. Doing so will contribute to the Loremaster achievement, and add every quest-related Reputation gain to your Warband. And if you still need some exp for that alt, you can finish it with delve or dungeon spam. Remember, each level 80 character adds a 5% bonus to the received exp up to 25%.
