Today, we prepared a comprehensive guide on how to sim your gear in TWW. So here is information on how to find the best gear combinations and how to do it.

How to sim your gear in TWW: Find the best gear in 5 steps

While playing World of Warcraft, you probably faced some situations when you were unsure which Trinket is better for Raid or M+ runs. Or you might not be sure which reward to pick from the Great Vault. Finding answers can be rough when this happens, and just checking your results during some encounters is not a long-term option. This will not give you pure numbers without the impact of circumstances on your performance. Here is where gear simulation saves the day. Simming your gear concentrates on giving fair answers on which gear is best for your build. In this guide, we will mention both DPS and Healing gear simulation. So, let’s take a closer look at how to do it.

What is gear simulation

Gear simming is a way to find the best gear you can get and make the most efficient build. It is almost impossible to objectively prognose your potential damage with one or another item. This makes simulating gear an important part of any min-maxing. By simming, you can also get information about all the gems, enchants, and tier set bonuses.

How to sim your gear

First step

First, to sim your gear, you need to install the Simulationcraft addon. While logged on to the character you want to sim gear for, type the /simc command in the chat (or just click the addon button next to the minimap). Once you press Enter, a window with lots of text will appear. This is all the information about your character that we will need very soon. Copy (Ctrl+C) all the text from this window. If you want to sim your solo target or an AoE build, don’t forget to prepare your talents accordingly to the chosen build. Talents are also needed for simulation and are very important. Now, head to the Raidbots site.

Main page

On the main page of the site, we can see various objectives for simming. You can find the best gear, optimize raid drops from bosses, quickly check your current build, and even tune simming the way you need. Today, we will focus on finding the best gear and comparing items. This is why we are interested in the ”Top Gear” section.

Build input

After opening the Top Gear section, you will be faced with a blank window. We need to insert your simming code, which we copied earlier from the in-game addon. Paste the code (Ctrl+V) in this window. Now, all information about your character is loaded to this web page.

Second step

This is a fun part. Now, we must fill in all the information and pick items for the gear sim. Here are the sections we will work with:

Gear slots

This section contains all gear slots and gear that you have available in your inventory. If you want to compare a few items with different ilvl to ensure which is the best at max rank, adding valorstones and crests at the beginning of the page is needed. This way, you will be able to see all possible upgrades in the future. So, we recommend filling in this information to get the best simulation result. Remember how we mentioned that choosing your Great Vault reward can be tricky? Thankfully, all available items can be added here via ”Select all Great Vault items”. Gems and enchants are also shown here for better navigation. Now, simply choose the items you want to compare. They will be marked with yellow and will be used in simming.

Third step

Now, we can add gems, enchants, and talents to our gear sim. This part is quick and not as impactful, but we will discuss it anyway. Here are the sections we will work with:

Enchantments

The next section shows all possible enchantments that you can use for your gear. All of these are mentioned at the top rank (crafted with the best ingredients). If you want to make sure that your enchant is the best possible and compare it to the other ones — add it to the simming. All chosen enchantments will also be marked with yellow color.

Gems

This section contains all currently available gems. They are sorted by the stats they boost. Alagari gems are crucial for any build. They become more powerful the more colors of other gems you contain in your gear. One Alagari gem is needed somewhere in your sockets. Try not to compare too many gems in one gear simulation run. Simulation can take longer, and the number of iterations can significantly increase (and you have a cap of 300k iterations).

Talents

The next section shows all talent trees presets you have on your character. Choose the ones you want to compare. Make sure to use one-sided talent trees. E.g., single target build (for raid) or AoE/cleave build (for M+).

Fourth step

This is the final step, where we choose conditions for our gear simming. This part is very important. Choosing the wrong combination of conditions can heavily impact the result.

Simulation options

Here, you can choose the situation in which your gear will be simmed. Normally, for a raid boss fight with a single target, you will choose: Patchwerk -> 1 Boss -> 5 minutes. And for your AoE/cleave builds for Mythic plus runs, you can choose the ”Dungeon Slice” option.

Fifth step

Now, when everything is filled in and all gear, enchants, and gems are chosen, we can start simming our gear. Remember that there is a limit for simultaneous gear simulation in the free version. If needed, make a few more simulations for different combinations.

Gear sim and results

Click the ”Find top gear” button. This will start the gear simulation process. This can take some time, depending on the amount of iterations (5-10 minutes). You can grab a cup of tea while the simulation is being processed. Once the site is done with all the information you gave it, you will see the result. This page automatically shows you the best gear from everything you wanted to compare. These results will also mention the best talent tree out of the ones they were chosen.

Just below this top gear window, you can see which items improved or worsened your DPS results. This part also mentions the exact numbers the gear simulation came up with. This way, you can see if the impact is strong or not.

Healer addition

The previously mentioned site is concentrated on measuring overall DPS. Even though it is important for Healers, the most desired performance is related to healing (HPS). There is a different site for gear sim in terms of healing. Head to the Questionablyepic. It doesn’t provide you with the same variety of conditions as the DPS analog but is very useful for Healers. Simply choose your Healer class, click the ”Top Gear” button, import your character’s code from Simulationcraft, choose items for simming, and see the results.
