WoW Midnight Patch 12.1 bonus roll guide: How Nebulous Voidcores work
Midnight patch 12.1 reintroduces the Voidforge, a system that enhances your gear and adds bonus rolls. Here’s our bonus roll guide for you.

Key takeaways:
- Voidforge replaced: The Season 1 Voidforge is no longer used. Orin Straylight now handles Nebulous Voidcore research near the Catalyst in Silvermoon.
- New bonus roll source: You can choose a Nebulous Voidcore from the Great Vault after unlocking at least three reward slots. Later in Season 2, Orin also provides one weekly.
- Cheaper targeted loot: Every bonus roll now costs one Nebulous Voidcore, including raids, while the knockout system continues to reduce duplicate rewards.
- Ascendant upgrades return later: Ascendant Voidcores are being replaced by Ascendant Venomstones in Patch 12.1.5.
Table of Contents
Midnight Season 2 keeps one of the most useful systems introduced through the Voidforge: targeted bonus loot. However, Blizzard has changed how you unlock Nebulous Voidcores, where they come from, and how much bonus rolls cost.

Bonus Rolls in Patch 12.1

The Voidforge itself is no longer used for Midnight Season 2 progression. Decimus has moved on to other interests, with his apprentice Orin Straylight taking over the research behind Nebulous Voidcores. Season 1 Nebulous Voidcores were converted to gold when the season ended and cannot be used for Season 2 bonus rolls.
This also means you no longer need to return to the Voidforge every week and exchange gold, Voidlight Marl, or Veteran Dawncrests for your regular supply of bonus rolls. Instead, the Season 2 system is tied primarily to Orin Straylight and the Great Vault.
How to unlock Bonus Rolls
To unlock Nebulous Voidcores for Midnight Season 2, head back to Decimus in Voidstorm and pick up the quest In the Catalyst’s Shadow. Decimus will send you to his new apprentice, Orin Straylight, who can be found next to the Catalyst in Silvermoon City:
/way #2393 40.0 64.7 Orin Straylight
Orin then offers Prismatic Potential, requiring you to collect 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards. You can earn Elementary Voidcore Shards from:
- Midnight Season 2 raid bosses
- Mythic+ dungeons
- Bountiful Delves
- Nightmare Prey Hunts
Each completed activity grants one shard. Progress is Warband-wide, so once the questline is completed, the Season 2 Nebulous Voidcore system is unlocked across your characters.
How to get Nebulous Voidcores

The biggest change to bonus rolls in Patch 12.1 is how you acquire Nebulous Voidcores. During Season 1, Decimus offered two Voidcores per week in exchange for gold, Voidlight Marl, or Veteran Dawncrests. That system is gone for Season 2.
Great Vault
Your main source of Nebulous Voidcores is now the Great Vault. If you have unlocked at least three Great Vault reward slots during the week, you can choose a Nebulous Voidcore instead of taking a piece of gear. The three unlocked slots can come from any combination of Great Vault rows, so you do not need to complete three objectives from the same type of content.
This creates an important gearing decision each week: take a guaranteed Vault item or sacrifice that reward for another chance at a specific piece of gear through a bonus roll.
Orin Straylight
Orin will eventually become an additional weekly source of Nebulous Voidcores. After completing Prismatic Potential, Orin continues researching how to weave Voidcores through the Catalyst. Starting from Week 8 of Season 2, he will provide one additional Nebulous Voidcore every week.
This means bonus rolls become easier to obtain later in the season without forcing players to sacrifice their Great Vault reward every time.
How bonus rolls work

Nebulous Voidcores can still be spent after completing eligible Season 2 endgame content. Bonus rolls work with:
- Raid bosses
- Mythic+ dungeons
- Bountiful Delves
- Nightmare Prey Hunts
After finishing eligible content, a Bonus Loot window appears. You can either spend a Nebulous Voidcore or close the window and save it for another encounter.
And that wraps up our bonus roll guide! If you’re struggling to obtain the best gear, a WoW Gearing Boost will be a reliable way to give you the edge you need.
