No, Bungie Is Not Making Destiny 3 and Here’s Why

Destiny 3

In recent days, rumors have intensified about Bungie making a new Destiny game and teasing it through a fresh survey. We understand why fans want to believe this, but there are too many contradictions which we’ll discuss in this article. Sit tight; we’re starting!

Bungie Said Multiple Times That They Are Not Gonna Make Destiny 3

Destiny 3 rumors

The first significant point in this discussion is the developers’ words. After leaving Activision, they stated that they were pressured to make the third installment. Regardless, after becoming independent, they rejected the idea in favor of designing D2 as a platform. There have been no denials from them, and after The Final Shape, there would be 100% a year of content with teasers for the upcoming Saga.

It’s clear that people want to believe Destiny 3 is in the works due to significant engine issues and the overall technical state of D2. Nevertheless, the developers are constantly working to improve and optimize it to store more content in this MMO in the future. Moreover, releasing the next part may result in another characters reset, meaning a complete loss of all the accumulated loot from years of playing.

Bungie Has Several Other Games in Development

Marathon

The following argument is that the studio already has several titles in development besides D2 support. At least at this point, we know about the existence of the Marathon and Matter (Bungie new IP). The leading team is working on the Marathon, which has significantly impacted the support for Destiny 2. As for the latter one, only a little is known except that it will be released in 2025.

Obviously, working on three games simultaneously while assisting Sony with their multiplayer projects doesn’t let the studio focus on Destiny 3 or even spin-off projects. Even now, they are recruiting new members for the D2 development team, as the new Bungie game is a significant priority at the moment.

The Latest Survey Was in May, and It’s Not a Big Deal

survey destiny

The source of all the rumors is a recent closed survey in which the game’s creators were interested in players’ willingness to try other projects in the Destiny franchise. Fans immediately started to speculate that the studio is preparing something, supposedly Destiny 3. Still, there are no hints besides this survey.

In the gaming industry, feedback from the fanbase is standard practice. For instance, in Fortnite or Dead By Daylight, it’s needed to gauge interest in potential collaborations that could be featured in their titles. Atlus also frequently inquired about releasing their game series on other platforms over the years. Moreover, the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online recently sent similar questions about more titles like their MMO. This analysis aims to determine the franchise’s future product direction, which may take one or five years to materialize.

It’s evident that Bungie is considering various options and may proceed similarly to the DBD developers, giving other studios their IP so they can create their own products within the series. It’s a fairly realistic scenario, considering the previous point.

There Were No Destiny 3 Leaks (Almost)

Destiny 2 road map
But we have D2 Road Map!

Perhaps the last argument is that not a single insider has reported on the triquel being in development. If you usually track Bungie, you know how easily and frequently they leak information about their internal works. Insiders like Liz often are informed about all the significant news concerning the studio and its projects. If there were any information regarding the Destiny 3 release date or the title itself, it would have quickly leaked to the internet.

April 2024 Update: On April 9, a Reddit user leaked the existence of Destiny 3 despite no official comments from other insiders about its development. The post also predicted the Prismatic subclass in The Final Shape. We discussed this in more detail in our Destiny 3 Leak article, where even the project’s codename, Payback, is revealed. According to the leaker, this means the Destiny developers are getting Payback against themselves by creating something they hope everyone will love.

Nonetheless, there are no more reliable confirmations of this, as evidenced by a Paul Tassi article from Forbes, which also does not have proof of these claims. Most likely, the development of the third part either started very recently or is being kept in strict secrecy.

Final Words

With just four arguments, we can say that Destiny 3 is most likely not in development. Yes, due to the latest rumor, there is a chance now for the game to exist, but we cannot say for sure whether it is true or not. Only time will be able to show and answer the question that torments us all: “Will there be a Destiny 3?” At this point, the answer is that there won’t be a Destiny 3.

Danielsays:

I was hoping that after totally screwing up d2 that they would scrap it and start over with a new installment. oh well. i guess ill just stick to the original. it’s a better game any way.

David Jones, jnrsays:

Neilsays:

Some of us didn’t even ask for Destiny 2. I Still miss the OG to this day, especially Rise of Iron.

Chromesays:

i think its good and i hope they never make another one because for once we can have a reliable game and maybe they just try to improve the game beyond what they have optimized so it can be the perfect mmo shooter. ways they could do this are pretty simple by maybe adding 2-3 raids a year or other activity to keep the game alive and in the mean time they can return old content

Baboonsays:

I’d love to see a single player story driven Destiny game with possible coop capabilities but not requiring online play, akin to Dark Souls multiplayer. Destiny doesn’t need to be a games as service game. I want a cohesive single player game that explains what the hell the Traveller is and maybe even give it a dark twist. Because I personally, don’t trust the traveller. There has to be some merit to Eramis’ words, whether blinded by anger or not.

Damien Parkssays:

I would love to see a single player Story line as well And I’m not usually in to these type of games But for some reason, destiny alike And play It a lot And whenever destiny 2 came out. I got it and I liked it but then I didn’t like it Because it seemed too complicated to understand the whole point of the game And there’s not much of a storyline I stopped playing it a few years back. Because it Obviously seemed like a pointless game I hope they would come out with the destiny through you make it single player and actually have a story line that has meaning Because the meat only seems like the meaning of the game is to upgrade and that’s about it
