We are getting closer to the release of one of the most mysterious content drops in WoW. So, what will WoW Patch 10.2.6 content be about? Let’s take a guess with us!

The player base is brimming with excitement as a possible pirate-theme Patch is on the horizon. As we already know, the Patch 10.2.6 release is planned for early Spring 2024, in March. But aside from the date and teaser image in WoW roadmap 2024, we don’t know much about it. And that’s the intention of Blizzard’s developers. Inspired by the reception of Season of Discovery, the devs decided to bring the same feeling of surprise to retail players. To do so, they keep contents of the Patch 10.2.6, even its name, in complete secrecy.
Patch 10.2.6 won’t even have a PTR, depriving players of the opportunity to preview upcoming changes. As for dataminers, they can’t dig up any content that has yet to be revealed. We have almost nothing to go by other than theories and speculations based on the scant hints we have seen so far. Yet, despite the limited information, we have compiled all available clues to try to come up with some speculations of what might unfold in the next patch.
Patch 10.2.6 Content: What to Expect
Patch 10.2.6 Lore: The Return of Nightsquall
As we mentioned earlier, Patch 10.2.6 content is expected to be themed around swashbucklers. The one and only teaser for the Patch we had all this time is an image of a black flag adorned with a skull and crossbones that screams “Pirate!” Yet, the whole pirate business actually started much earlier, way before Blizzcon 2023.
Players knew nothing about the upcoming War Within and Worldsoul saga back then. In Patch 10.0.7, players gained access to the Forbidden Reach zone of Dragon Isles. There, among many new things, one could find a lonely abandoned ship with a fascinating book onboard. Called Return of the Nightsquall, it tells the story of the Night Elf pirate of the same name. The book also mentions lands hidden behind western storms that no one but Nightsquall was able to cross and return. That info started a process of theory-crafting, leading the community to believe the next expansion would be a pirate-themed one.
Alas, this is not what’s happened. As we know, at Blizzcon 2023, the Worldsoul saga was announced. And neither The War Within nor the other two expansions smell of rum and seawater. The idea of pirate-themed expansion quickly disappeared, yet this doesn’t mean Dragonflight can’t feature some buccaneers.
Irontide Raiders, Bloodsail Buccaneers, Defias Brotherhood, and Freebooters
Although, from the lore perspective, he is a legend, Captain Nightsquall’s name is quite foreign to players’ ears. Yet the last page of the book dedicated to his return mentions some familiar faces. Those are Irontide Raiders, Bloodsail Buccaneers, Defias Brotherhood, and Freebooters. These pirate factions are known to everyone, as they appear in various quest lines and zones.
Irontide Raiders were a crucial part of the Alliance campaign in the Battle for Azeroth. Situated in Freehold, they are known for helping Lady Ashvane in her plot. It is said, only cruel and heartless people can become part of the crew.
Bloodsail Buccaneers are known to anyone who visited Booty Bay and the surrounding seas. A menace to both lands of Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.
Defias Brotherhood is an iconic faction, known to players since the beginning of World of Warcraft. Operating in Westfall, trying to get their revenge on the nobles of Stormwind. A lot happened to them throughout WoW history, but now, only cutthroats and bandits remain in their ranks.
Last but not least are Freebooters. Although they don’t have some sort of unique storyline, they are still a crucial part of the pirate community of Azeroth. Split into Southsea and Northsea factions that dislike each other. One is active in the Southern Lands of Kalimdor, while another — is in the cold reaches of Northrend.
The Return of Nightsquall sends a message to all these factions, aiming to unite them under the flag of the legendary captain. But what could this mean from a content standpoint?
New Quests
First and foremost, there may be new quests involving all those factions. All of them bring enough trouble as it is, but united under the rule of a notorious pirate means more misery to the realm. Thus, it’s a perfect reason for the champions of Azeroth to step up and stop them.
New Event
The developers also mentioned an upcoming “event” that is “inspired by past musing from the community.” It may bear a resemblance to the zone event system found in Dragonflight, where time-limited events pop up on the map. Any player can join in to complete specific objectives and earn rewards. Now, just imagine: pirates have united, and now they raid and pillage various territories across Azeroth. And now, it’s up to the heroes of Azeroth to help local defenders repel such attacks.
Of course, what’s a pirate without a little treasure? Perhaps the new activity will be somewhat like a treasure hunt. As we mentioned before, the devs were inspired by the success of the Season of Discovery. So they might implement a mechanic similar to the Rune findings in SoD.
In Season of Discovery, players sought high and now to get all the runes for their classes. Dungeons, chests, traders, everywhere. It’s a real treasure-hunting experience. And although we know there won’t be any Runes coming to Retail, this doesn’t mean the same mechanic cannot be done with another reward.
Pirate Dungeons
During the event, there’s a chance that two dungeons, Freehold and Deadmines, could be featured. Freehold is closely tied to the Irontide Raiders, while Deadmines is associated with the Defias Brotherhood. We might see revamped versions of these dungeons, or they could be required for certain event quest lines.
Patch 10.2.6 Is Open to Both Classic and Dragonflight Players
There are also some other fascinating possibilities based on the developers’ words:
“We can say that it [the event] is open to anyone with a WoW subscription if they want to participate (Classic or Dragonflight players).”

This particular statement sparked various assumptions and theories. One theory suggests that the event might extend beyond the confines of the Dragon Isles and encompass older World of Warcraft zones. Consequently, even Classic players could potentially partake in the event without having a capped-level character or access to the Dragon Isles.
Another somewhat wild theory suggests that the pirate event will hit both Retail and Classic servers. Although it’s curious how this can be achieved, it is still a possibility, considering how little we know about the upcoming Patch.
Conclusion
Despite being held in complete secrecy with no PTR, Patch 10.2.6 still managed to bring excitement to players. What may Patch 10.2.6 content possibly be? What will actually happen, and what not?
