The War Within 11.1.7 Single-Button Assistant guide and Assisted Highlight
Explore how Patch 11.1.7 Single-Button Assistant and Assisted Highlight change WoW combat and guide ability usage for all DPS players.

Table of Contents
Key takeaways:
- Single-Button Assistant simplifies combat rotations: It automates your basic damage abilities, making it easier for new or experimenting players to engage in fights.
- Assisted Highlight offers guided ability use: This feature suggests your next damaging ability without playing the game for you, maintaining full control with no GCD penalty.
- These tools are training aids, not optimal solutions: While helpful, they lack support for advanced actions like cooldowns, movement, or utility, making manual play superior for high-end content.
Patch 11.1.7, World of Warcraft introduces two key accessibility features—Single-Button Assistant and Assisted Highlight. Originally unveiled during a WoWCast episode, these tools reflect the game’s evolving philosophy around in-game guidance, especially for newer players or those exploring unfamiliar specializations. Below, we take a closer look at how each feature works, how to enable them, and their limitations.

Single-Button Assistant

Patch 11.1.7 Single-Button Assistant is a user-friendly tool that helps players engage in combat by using a single spell slot to automatically rotate through their offensive abilities. This feature was primarily designed by Blizzard to promote accessibility, offering support for players with disabilities, chronic conditions, or just casual players so they can enjoy general World of Warcraft content more comfortably.
However, it is not recommended for competitive gameplay. In higher-end content—such as Mythic raids or M+ dungeons, using the One-Button Assistant can be a significant drawback. In some raid encounters, it may even disrupt mechanics or reduce overall effectiveness. Additionally, the assistant is not optimized for PvP, where its predictable behavior can put you at a clear disadvantage against players using manual controls.
However, doing Delves, Dastardly Duos, and Horrific Visions with this function should be fine.
The One-Button Assistant will also naturally benefit WoW players who use controllers.
What Single-Button Assistant does

As shown in this example, the Retribution Paladin uses just one button. The Single-Button Assistant automatically adapts to the next appropriate ability based on the recommended rotation. Some of its more in-depth features include:
- Automatically cycles damaging abilities: Executes a priority-based rotation using spells your character currently knows.
- Casts abilities on your active target: Attacks your current target without requiring manual input for each ability.
- Adapts to talents and enemy proximity: Switches between single-target and AoE based on your build and nearby enemies.
One-Button Assistant limitations
- Does not use major cooldowns: Abilities like Avenging Wrath or Bladestorm must be activated manually.
- Introduces a 0.3% GCD penalty: This makes ability execution slower and less optimal compared to manual input.
- Lacks mobility support: Movement abilities such as Blink or Sprint are not triggered by the assistant.
- No interrupts or crowd control: It cannot handle spells that disrupt enemies or control the battlefield.
- Does not use defensive or healing abilities: Survival and support spells must be managed manually.
- Ignores consumables and items: Trinkets, potions, and other inventory-based effects are not activated.
- Cannot switch targets: If your current target dies or needs to be changed, manual intervention is required.
- Only optimized for DPS specs: Doesn’t really work with Tank and Heal specs.
How to turn on Single-Button Assistant
In Patch 11.1.7 One-Button Rotation is always available by default, as it’s integrated directly into your spellbook rather than being a toggleable gameplay setting—making it entirely optional and up to you whether to place and use it on your action bar.
To turn on Single-Button Assistant in Patch 11.1.7, you have to:
- Open your Spellbook (You can press P button).
- In the top right corner, locate the Single-Button Assistant spell.
- Click and drag this spell to your action bar, just like any other ability.
- Use it by pressing the button as you would any other spell.
To view or customize the rotation:
- Right-click the icon in the Spellbook to expand or collapse the list of abilities it uses.
Assisted highlight

Patch 11.1.7 Assisted Highlight mode is an advanced guidance system that helps players identify the best ability to press next—without automating any actions. While the One-Button Rotation primarily serves as an inclusivity tool, Assisted Highlight acts more as an in-game teaching aid for understanding your rotation.
It’s especially useful for players learning a new specialization or exploring an unfamiliar class.
What Assisted Highlight does
Assisted Highlight provides on-screen visual cues to help guide your next combat action without automating gameplay.
- Highlights recommended abilities: Displays a green border around the next suggested damaging spell on your action bar.
- Adapts to talents and combat context: Adjusts recommendations based on your current talents and enemy positioning (also enemy Health, while working with Execute).
- No GCD penalty: Unlike the Single-Button Assistant, this feature does not delay your rotation.
- Full player control: You choose when and what to cast—Assisted Highlight simply offers guidance.

Here’s an example of how Assisted Highlight works: a Retribution Paladin casts Blade of Justice, and immediately after, the Rotation Assistant highlights Divine Hammer with a blue border, indicating it as the next recommended ability.
How to turn on Assisted Highlight
The Rotation Assistant in The War Within is a gameplay setting that must be manually enabled to appear in-game.
To turn on Assisted Highlight in Patch 11.1.7, you have to:
- Open the Main Menu.
- Go to Gameplay Options.
- Navigate to the Advanced Options tab.
- Enable the checkbox labeled “Assisted Highlight.”
Rotation Helper limitations
Patch 11.1.7 Rotation Helper has some limitations (although they are not so streamlined, because the function itself is not so limiting):
- Provides visual guidance only: Highlights your next damaging ability but doesn’t perform any actions automatically.
- No support for cooldowns or utility: Does not guide the use of healing, defensive, or utility abilities.
- Excludes movement and interrupts: Mobility skills, defensive spells, and interrupts are not included in its recommendations.
- Doesn’t adjust to boss mechanics: Offers no help with movement, positioning, or encounter-specific timing.
- Ignores item usage: Trinkets, potions, and other consumables are not tracked or suggested.
- Limited multi-target logic: Can only guide basic AoE vs. single-target decisions, not complex target switching (and is likely not optimized for encounters involving paired bosses in raids or dungeons).
Note
In Patch 11.1.7 of The War Within, the One-Button Rotation and Rotation Highlight features help you execute a basic damage rotation efficiently without relying on external factors.
However, they don’t account for advanced combat decisions—such as using potions for burst damage or moving out of danger zones during boss mechanics. As a result, both the Single-Button Assistant and Assisted Highlight are better suited as learning tools rather than full replacements for manual, skill-based rotations.

Comments
Does just having the single button on your bar cause the penalty or is it if you only use it? I had placed it only to observe, watch/adjust my rotation but didn’t plan on hitting it.
Only pressing the single-button assistant will trigger the GCD and any penalty. Just having it on your bar without using it won’t affect anything — your rotation and other buttons stay totally normal.
