Why should you choose Engineering as your profession?
Engineering in The War Within introduces new crafting options that build on the profession changes introduced in Dragonflight. Professions are receiving regular updates again, and Engineering remains a valuable skill, offering both utility and profit opportunities.
In The War Within, Engineering continues to be known for its utility. You can craft the new battle rez item, Convincingly Realistic Jumper Cables, for personal use or to sell. They can also create Portable Crafting Stations, Wormhole Generators, and fun items like the Filmless Camera. Additionally, you have exclusive access to the Irresistible Red Button, a new tool for reviving your allies. Through the Crafting Order system, you can produce specialized bracers and goggles for players looking to add Tinkers to their gear.
As the expansion advances, professional tools and accessories will be in high demand. As an Engineer, you play a crucial role in crafting gear for other professions like Jewelcrafting, Mining, Tailoring, and Fishing. While basic items can be sold at the Auction House, more advanced versions require the Crafting Order system.
Engineers are now the sole crafters of ranged weapons in The War Within, including the P.0.W. x2, which is available through the Crafting Order system. They can also create new and improved Tinkers, as well as bring back favorites from Dragonflight, now compatible with The War Within gear. If you enjoyed the Alarm-O-Turret, you’ll get to use it again. These Tinkers can also be sold for gold at the Auction House.
Mount collectors should note that Engineers can craft a new mount, the Crowd Pummeler 2-30, which costs 3,100,000 gold to make. Additionally, you can try your luck with Pilfer Through Parts once specialized. For more details, check out our dedicated guide:
What is the best combo with Engineering in WoW?
In The War Within, Engineering and Mining make a great pair. This combination remains the top choice because Engineering requires a large amount of ore to craft its gadgets, bombs, and other inventions. Mining allows you to gather these resources directly, saving gold compared to buying them at the Auction House and providing a steady supply of materials and resources, especially with the introduction of new Engineering specializations.
The War Within Engineering specializations
The War Within introduces three new Engineering specializations, available at levels 25, 50, and 75. Each offers distinct perks that can greatly influence your playstyle and focus on a different aspect of the profession:
Engineered Equipment
Engineered Equipment covers all your gear crafting needs, including Profession Equipment, Bracers, Guns, and Goggles. As an Engineer, you’ll unlock recipes, boost your skills and stats, and gain access to Missives, Finishing Reagents, and Enchanted Crests to craft these items.
Devices
Devices focuses on Explosives, Tinkers, and any items in its category. Engineers will earn skill and secondary stat bonuses and various utility bonuses. For instance, investing 15 points in Explosives allows Engineers to use a potion bomb without consuming it.
Inventing
Inventing combines general Engineering bonuses with Reagent and Cogwheel crafting. The top nodes boost skill and secondary stats like Ingenuity and Resourcefulness. Engineers will also gain valuable perks for Pilfering and Scrapping. The middle node, Parts, focuses on Reagent crafting, while the final sub-nodes enhance Cogwheel crafting skills. Players interested in the new Engineering mount should choose the Parts path to find Pummeler parts when Pilfering.
Approximate materials required
Here’s the total amount of raw materials needed to reach level 40. Materials for levels 40-100 aren’t included since there are too many variables. Quality doesn’t matter for leveling — buy the cheapest:
- 260x Bismuth
- 22x Aqirite
- 4x Crystalline Powder
The War Within Engineering trainer
You can learn Khaz Algar Engineering from Thermalseer Arhdas on the Isle of Dorn in Dornogal at [49, 65]. The Tinker’s Workbench is beside the trainer.
The War Within Engineering guide: Leveling
1 – 15
Use Scour Through Scrap until you reach level 15, and keep 30x Pile of Rusted Scrap. These Scraps drop from mobs and various activities around Khaz Algar, so you should gather enough while leveling. They’re essential for most Engineering recipes and discovering new ones. You’ll need a lot to unlock all the Engineering recipes.
Alternative methods
If you’re new to Engineering and don’t have many Scraps, here’s what you should do:
- Kill Candlelit Boomers and other kobolds until you gather 20x Piles of Rusted Scrap.
- Use the Scour Through Scrap ability four times.
- Learn the Pilfer Through Parts ability from your trainer. This ability works on items from older expansions, letting you create Piles of Rusted Scrap without needing to farm mobs.
- Buy 275x Handful of Serevite Bolts at the Auction House and use Pilfer Through Parts on them. This will give you 55x Piles of Rusted Scrap.
- Use Scour Through Scrap 5 times on 25 of these Scraps.
- Save 30x Piles of Rusted Scrap for later use.
15 – 20
The Engineering supply vendor near your trainer sells Frayed Wiring and Junk Buckets.
- 10x Whimsical Wiring requires 10x Frayed Wiring and 30x Bismuth.
- 10x Gyrating Gear requires 10x Junk Bucket, 30x Bismuth, and 10x Aqirite.
- 45x Handful of Bismuth Bolts requires 180x Bismuth.
Hold onto these items; you’ll need them later. While you’ll need more, crafting them as you go is better.
20 – 25
Here’s a simplified and more fluent version of your text:
- 1x Bismuth Fueled Samophlange requires 8x Bismuth Bolts, 2x Whimsical Wiring, and 2x Gyrating Gears.
- 4x Safety Switches require 4x Crystalline Powder, 20x Bismuth, and 12x Aqirite.
Equip the Bismuth Fueled Samophlange.
25 – 33
Learn the remaining recipes from your trainer, then craft one of each of the following items to earn your first crafting bonuses:
- 1x 4UT0-41M3R requires 10x Piles of Rusted Scrap, 6x Handfuls of Bismuth Bolts, 1x Whimsical Wiring, 1x Gyrating Gear, 1x Safety Switch
- 1x Tracker’s Goggles requires 5x Piles of Rusted Scrap, 4x Handfuls of Bismuth Bolts, 1x Whimsical Wiring, 1x Gyrating Gear
- 1x Acolyte’s Goggles requires 5x Piles of Rusted Scrap, 4x Handfuls of Bismuth Bolts, 1x Whimsical Wiring, 1x Gyrating Gear
- 1x Spelunker’s Goggles requires 5x Piles of Rusted Scrap, 4x Handfuls of Bismuth Bolts, 1x Whimsical Wiring, 1x Gyrating Gear
- 1x Dredger’s Goggles requires 5x Piles of Rusted Scrap, 4x Handfuls of Bismuth Bolts, 1x Whimsical Wiring, 1x Gyrating Gear
33 – 40
If you’ve found new items through prototypes or other methods, now’s the perfect time to start crafting them to earn those first craft bonuses. Focus on crafting these instead of the four Engineering tools:
- 4x Bismuth Fueled Samophlange requires 32x Handful of Bismuth Bolts, 8x Whimsical Wiring, 8x Gyrating Gear
Inventing and Prototypes
Since most Engineering recipes aren’t taught by your trainer, you can discover them using the new discovery system. Here’s how to discover a new recipe:
- Use your spell book’s Invent ability (it has a 1-day cooldown).
- After using it, you’ll receive a Prototype in your inventory. For example, you can use the Prototype: Potion Bomb of Power.
- If you already have a Prototype, you’ll get an Unrecognizable Prototype instead. Just right-click it to identify it.
- Use the Prototype: Potion Bomb of Power in your inventory to learn the corresponding recipe, such as Potion Bomb of Power. Once learned, you can craft it from your profession spell book.
There are 14 recipes you can discover this way, all following the same process.
Alternative methods
Luckily, you can also obtain Prototypes by Scouring Through Scrap. On average, you’ll get one Prototype for every 25 Scraps, which is about the same cost as Inventing, though you won’t earn any skill points.
Scraps required to unlock every Prototype
To discover every Prototype, you’ll need 350x Piles of Rusted Scrap. To collect that much, you would need 1,750x Handfuls of Serevite Bolts. Alternatively, you can play the game, loot scrap from mobs, and complete your daily Inventing tasks.
Unlocking more Engineering recipes
Once you discover every Prototype, you will stop getting Unrecognizable Prototypes and start getting Hastily Scrawled Notes instead. You can turn 15x Hastily Scrawled Notes into Comprehensibly Organized Ideas. Using the Comprehensibly Organized Ideas will present you with a window where you can choose between 3 Engineering recipes.
40 – 100
There are two methods for leveling up in this part of the process. We’ll explain both, and you can choose the one that suits you best.
Inventing
Inventing grants skill points up to level 100, so you can reach the max level by consistently using the daily Invent and getting the first craft bonus from discovered recipes. If you do this regularly, you should reach level 100 in about 15 days.
Pausing Pylon
Pausing Pylon is the cheapest recipe available. If you want to level up quickly, use Scour Through Scrap to get this recipe, then craft it until you reach around level 92. To craft a Pausing Pylon, you’ll need:
- 600x Pile of Rusted Scrap
- 480x Handful of Bismuth Bolts
- 120x Whimsical Wiring
- 120x Gyrating Gear
You can continue making the Pausing Pylon up to level 95, but skill points will come less frequently. Inventing is still the most reliable method for finishing the last 8 points.
Darkmoon Fair
When Darkmoon Faire is active, you can earn 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a short quest from Rinling called Talkin’ Tonks. It’s best to save this quest until later to maximize the skill points you gain.
