In case you want to get a deeper look into the meta before choosing your WoW best class to main in War Within, be sure to check out our The War Within tier list. We often update said tier list whenever anything major happens in the game. However, please keep in mind that all tier lists and recommendations are subjective and only serve as the “Which class to play in The War Within” references for you. The most important thing is to enjoy the game. If a class works well for you, even if it’s not highly recommended here, don’t worry—just have fun with your chosen class!

Does race matter when choosing a class for The War Within?

Before we start talking about the best WoW classes War Within, choosing your character’s race is a matter. Over the years, the gameplay significance of the player character’s race has reduced significantly. The racial bonuses became more of the extra flavor. Some race talents may still be useful in PvP environments. But other than that, the choice of race purely depends on your “best class in War Within” aesthetic preferences.

What does race affect, however, is the pool of available classes. Meaning some combinations of race and class are unavailable. Although most classes are accessible to everyone, Paladin, Druid, Shaman, and Demon Hunter have some limitations. And speaking of limitations, while Blizzard has confirmed that Dracthyr will gain access to more classes later in the expansion, Evoker is their only choice at the moment. So when you choose TWW best class to play in War Within, be sure to take all this into account.

The War Within classes: Roles and important information

Most of WoW The War Within classes are based on classics you can meet in other role-playing games. Below, we present you with a summary of what to expect when choosing a class to play in The War Within, covering aspects such as potential meta position, overall gameplay experience, and even aesthetics

Death Knight

Role: Tank, Melee DPS

The first Heroic class, as it starts at a higher level than others. These dark champions take root in older Warcraft games, making them one of the most iconic and WoW best classes to level in the game. In battles, they rely on the power of Blood to live forever, Frost to take advantage of slowed enemies, and Unholy to summon undead to their side.

Death Knights were always above average in ratings and better in WoW’s 10th expansion. Playing one to the full requires some skill, and not many DK players could provide that. As a result, groups often prefer members who play less demanding classes.

In terms of gameplay, they are not hard, but to pick it as your class to play in The War Within, you need an understanding of their kit, weaknesses, and strong sides. New Heroic talents provide meaningful choices for DK. You can pick the path that fits your preferences instead of going for a stronger one.

Demon Hunter

Role: Tank, Melee DPS

Another of War Within Hero classes. These elves use two glaives for quick, dance-like combat. They also consume Fel energies to use them against its source. As a result, their bodies are twisted and corrupted, but no price is too great to defeat demons. This edgy class can also transform into one.

DH has always been a metaclass and one of the best tanks for War Within as well, especially for playing in M+, and nothing has changed for that. This is probably the only downside of Demon Hunter, as they didn’t get any significant changes going into War Within.

As for gameplay, they are very mobile and have high survivability. DH is considered by many to be the easiest class in the War Within. Even when you’re playing tank DH, you feel like a full-time DPS. So, if you’re searching for an easy but dynamic melee class to play in The War Within, DH is a great choice.

Druid

Role: Tank, Healer, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS

Defenders of nature, these magic wielders can shapeshift into various forms to better perform their tasks. Each race with access to the Druid has unique forms, but the difference is purely cosmetical. They can turn into bears, cats, or a mystic moonkin — a combination of bear and owl. If that is not enough to make Druids your best class to play TWW, they also can call on the rejuvenating powers of nature to mend wounds.

Healer and Guardian specs are considered to be among the best specs for The War Within and in their role altogether, while Balance and Feral struggle a little bit. Druid’s utility is great, but high chances are the group already has either tank or healer Druid for that.

Druid is the first class on our list and has access to three roles and four various playstyles. These War Within best specs are unique spins on more traditional classes, such as Warrior, Mage, and Rogue. The healer spec is more on the harder side, as it is all about regen effects uptime and doesn’t have as many direct heals as other healers. Picking Druid as your best class to play in WoW The War Within, you can try out various roles on a single character.

Evoker

Role: Healer, Ranged DPS, Support DPS

The exclusive Dracthyr Heroic class. They possess the powers of each Dragonflight. That includes control over fire, stone and metal, ice, Nature, and even Time. Evoker is always in the top tier just because of how good they are. Especially since this is the only class with proper Support DPS spec. That way, Evoker can enable stronger classes to deal even more damage.

Being the most recent addition to the roster, Evoker feels like one of the most modern and The War Within top DPS classes. Many non-target abilities, impactful movement, and charge systems encourage satisfying decision-making. Not advised to new players, as this class assumes you have an understanding of how WoW combat works.

Hunter

Role: Ranged DPS, Melee DPS

A DPS that trusts their life to pets. If you’re a fan of the ranger archetype with a trusted forest companion, there are three War Within best Hunter specs to choose from. The selection of available pets is quite wide as well. Finding and taming them, especially the rare ones, is akin to an engaging mini-game. You can easily find a companion for your taste. Or you can forget pets altogether and focus on your marksmanship. Or go full-on melee mode.

Hunters have a unique utility that allows them to secure a spot in a high-end environment. Even if they never were top damage in the group. The new reworks coming in War Within spice things up. Many players hope for a good performance from the Hunters.

The Hunter is also one of The War Within best ranged DPS classes to play for starters, as pets provide good survivability and decent damage. As for veteran players, the mentioned reworks improved the situation with a gameplay loop. You don’t just spam Kill Command anymore.

Mage

Role: Ranged DPS

Another classic class on the list. Aside from controlling fire, ice, and arcane, Mages can open portals and conjure cookies out of thin air. If the most standard depiction of a fantasy magician is what you seek, choosing the Mage as one of the best classes in WoW TWW is a great option.

Mages are always high in the meta rankings, and the current expansion seems to push that even further. Great utility, and high damage in both solo and AoE scenarios. And do not forget its high survivability and mobility, which also make it one of the WoW best caster classes in the game.

As for gameplay, Mages lean towards the harder side. Mage is not advised as one of the best WoW classes for beginners 2024 unless you are confident in your skills. But if difficulty is not a problem, a fun class with many options awaits. Developers’ favorite, Mage, may be the strongest class to play in the War Within.

Monk

Role: Tank, Healer, Melee DPS

The only class in the game with oriental aesthetics. WoW Monks embody all the stereotypical things about Shaolin monks presented in the media. They train their bodies into deadly weapons, achieve spiritual enlightenment, and create various brews in their free time. If you want to feel like a hero of those old movies or punch a dragon in the face, the Monk is an ideal choice, answering your “Which class should I play in WoW?” question.

Monks are going strong into War Within, thanks to the reworks they are getting. The class feels impactful, provides utility, and is great to have around. They are not the highest of the rankings but hold high positions, making them among The War Within best melee classes.

But, if you plan to choose Monk as your class to play in The War Within, be warned that they are complicated. Out of all three specs, the tank one, Brewmaster, is probably even more challenging than the others. You must have a firm understanding of each spec mechanics and rotation. The class truly shines in the hands of skilled players, and playing it to its full potential feels rewarding, making Monks one of the best tanks War Within WoW to play.

Paladin

Role: Tank, Healer, Melee DPS

Take Warriors and sprinkle them with Holy magic. Here, you got the Paladin. Jokes aside, though, Paladins are great fighters and protectors. Powers of Holy light compliment their martial prowess. They can defend allies, smite enemies, and lay hands on those in need. If being the hero and defender of the weak is your forte, try Paladin as your best tank War Within.

Hero talents and rework result in many predicting Paladins will take higher class rankings War Within. New tools for Retribution improved the weak sides of the spec. At the moment of writing, Holy is considered one of the best healers for War Within.

Paladin is another first class on our list that can access all three roles. This way you can try out various specs to find the role that fits you the most. The relative ease of Paladin’s gameplay also helps with that, strengthening its stance as a versatile class to play in The War Within and answering your question on WoW how to pick a main.

Priest

Role: Healer, Ranged DPS

Class that can use divine magic of Light to prevent or heal wounds. Or Shadow magic to deal with enemies. Not just any Shadow, but the power of the Void itself. Void in the WoW universe belongs to cosmic horrors. And Priests can borrow their powers.

All three specs are looking good going into War Within. Discipline was one of the best healers in Dragonflight and now both Shadow and Holy specs are buffed up to its level.

Priest is the perfect class to play in The War Within if you want to try and pick up the role of a healer in WoW. Holy spec is your direct straightforward healer with powerful spells that heal wounds. Discipline is more complex as it requires you to know instances of damage beforehand so you can mitigate them. And if you realize healing is not for you, you can always switch to unleashing eldritch powers with Shadow.

Rogue

Role: Melee DPS

WoW’s Rogue covers all the aspects that come to mind when you think of one. Be it ruthless assassinations, dirty fighting, or espionage — Rogue has it all. So if playing from the shadows or kicking enemies in the shin is your style, Rogue is your class to play in The War Within.

From the meta perspective, Rogues struggle a little bit. They are known to excel in single-target scenarios. But AoE is lacking. Their utility, however, makes up for it. Good Rogue is always welcome to the party.

Gameplay requires some game knowledge to use your cooldowns accordingly. When to use invisibility, when not. What attacks to evade, what enemies to place under crowd-control effect, so on and so forth. But managing to figure out everything is really satisfying, which is why the Rogue can totally become your best DPS class for The War Within.

Shaman

Role: Healer, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS

Another nature-related class. Uses the power of classic elements such as fire, wind, earth, and water together with related natural phenomena and totems. The spiritualistic vibe of real-life shamanic religions included.

In Dragonflight, Shamans were quite neglected, with only Restoration spec being in decent territory. But War Within brings a massive rework to return Shamans to their glory. With all the new changes and adjustments, Shaman is now worthy to be a desirable class to play in The War Within high-end encounters.

The same goes for the gameplay. Many changes were made to ensure Shaman is one of the funniest and best classes to main in War Within. The same goes for their rotation and skill interactions. So if you wanted to try out Shaman as your best healer The War Within, but were afraid of its reputation, the current expansion is the great time to do so.

Warlock

Role: Ranged DPS

If you’re more of a fan of edgy aesthetics, then say no more. Warlocks receive their powers from demonic Fel energies. Terrible maladies, demonic flames, and devilish underlings — these are Warlock’s areas of expertise.

Warlocks always excel in AoE scenarios. When conditions are right, they can decimate packs in seconds. Their main drawback is the existence of Mages. Warlocks are good on their own. It’s just Mages can do all the same and some extra.

As for the gameplay, Warlock is a prime example of a low-skill floor and a high-skill ceiling. It is easy to get the hang of playing one. Thanks to demonic pets, they are also good for solo play, which makes them one of the WoW War Within best-ranged DPS classes to play. However, one must learn specific interactions and tricks to get maximum value from the class.

Warrior

Role: Tank, Melee DPS

A classic of many RPGs. From a style perspective, Warriors are straightforward and among the best melee War Within fighters who rely fully on their martial prowess. Clad in heavy armor, wielding swords, axes, shields, and other weaponry, they do not rely on magic or dirty tricks.

From the meta placements, the Warriors are always a dark horse. They start somewhere on the weaker side at the start of new expansions but always come on top as they get better gear. The reason for that is that they scale extremely well with the gear. So, we expect War Within to not be an exception. The downside always was a lack of unique utility, but Warrior made up for that with damage.

As for gameplay, Warriors need a deeper understanding of their buttons. New Heroic talents emphasize particular skills. So, players must ensure all the conditions are in place to do heavy damage. Warriors truly shine in the hands of skilled players; however, it’s also straightforward enough for casual players to have fun, making it one of WoW War Within best tanks to start with.

Julio forsays:

I thought druid was the first class on the list to be able to use a all 3 roles

Pedrosays:

“If you want the best class from all standpoints, choose mage” ? Sorry, but no. The only class that can only be a dps and a caster at it, aka the less flexible one will never be the best class from all standpoints.

Anonymoussays:

In the warlock section I think you mean high floor and high ceiling. Low floor would mean the low end is really bad

Anonymoussays:

No. It means there is more room for error and not suffering as much from making them.

Anonymoussays:

The floor is the worst possible outcome. If the floor is low that means the worst possible outcome is low. If the floor is high then the worst outcome is relatively higher. High performance floor = higher performance at the low end

Anonymoussays:

That’s not what skill floor and ceiling is a reference to. Low skill floor means it’s an easily accessible class with simple spell rotations and play style, such as Hunter. High skill ceiling means that the class requires high amount of skill management and game knowledge to pull off its full potential. A class with a low skill floor and high skill ceiling is the ideal, because it means anyone can pick up the class, but the class has enough skill expression to differentiate between noobs and skilled players.

Mattsays:

1 or more of everything at max lvl currently. Can’t really choose any main, but mostly agree with the guide as written. I do know I won’t be maining a rogue or hunter or dk – just can’t quite embrace them as I do the others. Beyond that, though, it’s a toss up.
