From declining interest in Mythic+ to class and spec imbalances, as well as the controversial increased difficulty in Mythic+ dungeons, Ion Hazzikostas’ interview with PC Gamer covers a wide range of topics. The Senior Game Director also shared Blizzard’s responses to these challenges and their plans moving forward. We highly recommend reading the full, in-depth article of PC Gamer that we have linked above. However, if you’re short on time, below is a quick recap of the interview’s key highlights.
Declining M+ participation:
- Participation in Mythic Plus has dropped significantly in The War Within, compared to Dragonflight. Raider.io data shows:
- Total runs: -70.58%
- Over Time runs: -74.27%
- Timed runs: -69.56%

- Ion Hazzikostas noted that the decline was expected due to the introduction of Delves and better rewards from easier dungeons.
- If players are shifting to Delves or raids for loot instead of Mythic+, it’s not necessarily a problem.
- The main priority is enhancing fun, engagement, and rewards for players who enjoy dungeons and their progression system, not just participation numbers. Blizzard is more focused on players’ behavior and sentiment.
- Blizzard only agrees M+ has a problem if the players who love Mythic plus gameplay in the past now feel frustrated with the system.
M+ class and spec imbalance in The War Within:
- The difficulty jump between Mythic dungeons and Mythic Plus is seen as excessive, particularly for players not in meta specs or without stable groups.
- The War Within Season 1 has shown a lack of diversity in group compositions, with certain classes dominating high-level runs. Non-meta classes struggle to find groups, making the system more restrictive and discouraging for players with non-meta specs.
- Blizzard understands the frustration of finding a group and being declined, especially when success rates between meta and non-meta specs are sometimes even. However, groups still tend to favor meta specs when inviting players.
Blizzard’s response and upcoming changes
Blizzard is addressing issues with the following changes in Season 2:
- Balancing dungeon difficulty and experience:
- Ensuring the dungeon pool maintains consistent difficulty across all dungeons.
- Reworking dungeons to enhance player experience and balance difficulty.
- Adjusting dungeon affixes and mechanics for better gameplay.
- Addressing player feedback:
- The current test build is just the beginning of ongoing iteration based on player feedback.
- Blizzard is focusing on fixing pain points while revisiting mechanics that were initially overlooked.
- Changes to Tankbusters and keystones:
- Tankbusters in Theater of Pain will be adjusted in an upcoming PTR build.
- Introducing non-depletable keystones after a failed run.
- Class and spec adjustments:
- Reworking class balance, with particular attention to nerf Augmentation Evokers.
- Development priorities:
- Hazzikostas reiterated that ensuring Mythic Plus remains enjoyable and accessible is a top priority for the development team.
