The Greedy Emissary event is returning in 2025 as part of The War Within patch 11.1.7 new activities, bringing back the chaos—and rewards—of Diablo-themed loot hunts. Although Blizzard has yet to confirm exact dates or full details, information from the PTR, datamining, and previous events gives us a strong picture of what’s to come.

Greedy Emissary overview

On the base level Greedy Emissary event is overly simple. It features special mobs from Diablo called Treasure Goblins that carry loot with them, and players have to defeat them as fast as possible to claim the rewards.

Before the Treasure Goblin appears, a portal icon briefly flashes on the map—your signal that the Goblin is about to spawn. Because other players can join in and compete for its loot, it’s often wise to tackle The Greedy Emissary with a group of friends.
Currently the confirmed locations of the event are:
- Stormwind
- Orgrimmar
- Dornogal
- Undermine
In summary, the 2025 Greedy Emissary event loop looks like this:
- Portal Spawns
- Portals appear every half hour: on the hour (x:00) and at the half-hour mark (x:30).
- A map icon marks the portal’s location, but only if you’re in that zone.
- Goblin Arrival
- Exactly 5 minutes after portal appearance (x:05 and x:35), a Treasure Goblin emerges.
- Goblins have low health—be ready to tag and burst them down.
- Zone Rotation
- While the exact rotation remains unconfirmed, it’s reasonable to expect both Dornogal and Undermine to appear—Blizzard has officially highlighted those zones.
Note
These rules apply only to Stormwind, Orgrimmar, and Dornogal. Undermine follows a completely different algorithm for Treasure Goblin spawns.
In Undermine, defeating any rare will trigger a portal that spawns a Treasure Goblin one minute later. This can occur once per hour for each rare. Rares that cannot trigger a goblin portal on death will have the Portal Problems debuff, indicating their ineligibility.
Treasure Goblin affixes
While not officially confirmed, the PTR build included Elixirs with names that matched Diablo 4 enemy affixes. These are believed to be part of the new Greedy Emissary event. Here’s the full list:
Affix | Elixir | Effect |
---|---|---|
Arcane | Arcane Elixir | Spawns Arcane Overloads, inflicting Arcane damage to enemies in the area. If no enemies in the area, inflicts Arcane damage to enemies within 50 yards. |
Blistering | Blistering Elixir | Summons Blistering Eruptions, which deal Shadowflame damage to players in the impact area. |
Connected | Connected Elixir | Occasionally spawns hordes of Fallen and Fallen Shaman. |
Chromic | Chromic Elixir | Currently unknown. |
Cursing | Cursing Elixir | Inflicts Sanctuary Tongues, forcing players to speak Diabolic and reducing cast speed by 10% until the Goblin is defeated. |

Healthy | Healthy Elixir | Spawns health globes that heal players that step on them. |
Magma | Magma Elixir | Hurls Magma at enemies, dealing Volcanic damage. Each impact summons a ball of lava that fixates on an enemy and deals Volcanic damage on impact. |
Molten | Molten Elixir | Currently unknown. |
Rallying | Rallying Elixir | Occasionally spawns hordes of Demonic Bovines. |
Rich | Rich Elixir | Spawns pools of money that give Greedy Motivation when stepped on, increasing Haste and Movement Speed for 15 seconds. |

As the number of affixes increases, the number and type of Treasure Goblins spawned changes accordingly. Here’s how they scale:
Number of Affixes | Number of Treasure Goblins | Goblin Affix Configuration |
---|---|---|
0 | 1 | 1 Goblin with 1 random affix |
1 | 1 | 1 Goblin with 1 portal + 1 random affix |
2 | 1 | 1 Goblin with 2 portal affixes |
3 | 2 | – 1 Goblin with 2 portal affixes- 1 Goblin with 1 portal + 1 random affix |
4 | 2 | – 2 Goblins with 2 portal affixes each |
5 | 3 | – 2 Goblins with 2 portal affixes each- 1 Goblin with 1 portal + 1 random affix |
6 | 3 | – 3 Goblins with 2 portal affixes each |
Optimal tagging macro
To ensure you secure the kill—and loot—consider an instant-cast tagging macro. Replace Conflagrate with your preferred instant spell:
Note:
Only instant damage spells can tag mobs—so skip damage-over-time abilities like Priest’s Shadow Word: Pain or Warlock’s Corruption, as they won’t count.
#showtooltip
/tar Treasure Goblin
/cast Conflagrate
– This auto-targets the goblin and immediately tags it, preventing other players from stealing the kill.
Event tips
- Zone-hopping Teams: Coordinate with friends to cover multiple zones. Share coordinate pings in voice chat for lightning-fast tag runs.
- Add-on tracking: Use Xirev’s Diablo IV event spreadsheet or an in-game addon to predict and plan your next portal location.
- Faction-neutral engagement: Goblins can spawn in enemy capitals—cross-faction tagging is permitted. Keep a stealth or flight form macro ready for quick in/out.
- Daily routine: Aim for your first kill early each day for the best odds at rare mounts and pets, then farm additional charms and transmog pieces at leisure.
Rewards
A key addition for the 2025 Greedy Emissary event is the introduction of Hellstone Shards and Hellcaller Chests. Hellcaller Chests—dropped by Treasure Goblins—can contain things like Valorstones and “otherworldly items.” While the full range of those items remains a mystery, they’re likely to include past-event rewards, new Elixirs and Charms, and more.
Importantly, the first 10 Hellcaller Chests you open each day will always yield at least one Hellstone Shard. These shards can be exchanged in Dornogal for the Classic recolored Tier 2 armor sets. After those initial ten, additional chests carry only a small chance to drop extra Hellstone Shards.
We’ll compile and share the complete list of “otherworldly items” (including potential throwbacks from previous events) as soon as the data becomes available.
Tier 2 sets recolors

Hellstone Shard will allow players to purchase the recolored Tier 2 sets from Baranar, an NPC located in the Dornogal hub [54.8, 63.6]. Each set costs 40 Hellstone Shards. To view all the Diablo-themed armor sets, check out the Tier 2 recolors introduced in Patch 11.1.7.
To get all Tier 2 set recolors you will require 520 Hellstone Shards for 13 classes. We know that Hellcaller Chests have at the very least 5 (and up to 10) Hellstone Shard, With this in mind we can assume that it will take at the very minimum 9 amount of days to get all the sets.
Greedy Emissary mounts

In the initial Patch 11.1.7 PTR Development Notes, datamining revealed at least one new mount for the Greedy Emissary event! The newly discovered mount is Inarius’ Charger, which is a recolor of Tyrael’s Charger mount.
