Let’s explore everything we know about the new Dungeon Checkpoint feature and what it looks like in-game.

Patch 11.2 Dungeon Waystones

Meet Dungeon Waystones: the new in-dungeon checkpoints. They look similar to Dungeon Meeting Stones but are placed inside dungeons at key locations. You’ll even see them on your minimap, making them easy to spot.

Dungeon Waystones aren’t limited to the new Eco-Dome Al’dalil dungeon. They’re being added to all relevant Season 3 dungeons, serving as checkpoints to save time after a wipe.

The new Checkpoint system will be familiar to all Delves runners, as Delves have had Checkpoints for a while now. At these Checkpoints, you can also change Brann’s abilities, repair, and sell gear.

How the new Dungeon Checkpoint works

We don’t yet know exactly how to activate Dungeon Waystones, but it’s safe to assume that simply running near one will set it as your Dungeon Checkpoint for that run.

If your party wipes and you release spirit, you’ll automatically resurrect at the last activated Dungeon Waystone. This means the entire group can quickly resume progress without long runbacks.

This new Dungeon Checkpoint system is expected to reduce downtime and make dungeon runs more dynamic for all players. It’s also much easier to understand than the old checkpoint system, which lacked clear visuals and often caused confusion.

Note

Healers will have an easier time now, since DPS players no longer need to wait for a resurrection: they can walk back to the party themselves from a Waystone after the fight ends. However, they won’t be able to rejoin the fight without being resurrected, as you can’t release your spirit unless the entire party wipes or the fight is over.

Devs comment

Here’s what a Blizzard developer shared about the new Dungeon Checkpoint system:

“We’re going to re-visit our philosophy there on how long a runback is and when [dungeon checkpoints] unlock and we want to visualize some of this in-game through what we’re calling Waystones. As you unlock checkpoints, you’ll have an icon on your map and you’ll have these stones that warp in and show you this is where I’m coming back if I release.”

— De Sousa, WoW dev.

This feature has been a long time coming. Over the years, players have faced constant frustrations with Dungeon Checkpoints: whether it was unclear checkpoint locations, too few of them, or exhausting runbacks after a wipe. Dungeon Waystones are specifically designed to address and eliminate many of these long-standing issues.
