Key takeaways
- Top WoW raiders Maximum (Team Liquid) and Rogerbrown (Echo) highlight major issues in the Race to World First, including unfair regional raid release times and player burnout.
- They call for a global raid launch, shorter and better-paced raid tiers, weekly skip options, and a loot system that rewards effort over luck.
- Without these reforms, competitive Mythic raiding risks losing hype, damaging player morale, and alienating viewers.
Two of World of Warcraft’s most prominent raiders, Maximum from Team Liquid and Rogerbrown from Echo, offered a critical look at the current state of Mythic raiding. From raid design and player burnout to the impact of staggered regional release times, both raiders agreed: the Race to World First (RWF) needs urgent reform.

Serious updates should be implemented to keep the race fun, fair, and competitive. Without major changes, the hype could die down, and the entire competitive Mythic raiding scene could suffer. So, what exactly is going wrong with RWF right now? Let’s take a look.
Race to World First problems
Here are some of the biggest issues with the Race to World First that Max and Rogerbrown have pointed out:
- Unfair raid release timing: North American guilds receive access to new raids almost a full day ahead of other regions.
- Due to timezone differences, guilds are forced to “go dark” to protect their strategies, preventing others from using them while they take breaks. Going dark kills hype and reduces fan involvement in the Race to World First.
- Extreme preparation: Raiders grind 20+ characters and multiple specs, leading to burnout. When raid tiers wrap up too quickly, the time and energy invested in gearing and practice can feel wasted.
- Inconsistent raid design: Bosses swing between bugged, overtuned, or overly complex mechanics, often at the cost of fun or innovation.
- Pressure from professionalization: Salaried guilds expect players to multiclass, and entire specs can get benched purely due to meta shifts.
- Loot and progression frustration: Very Rare Drops reward luck over effort. Early bosses often drop weak loot, and repetitive reclears drain morale.
What raiders want to change about RWF

Max from Team Liquid strongly supports the idea of a global raid launch. He believes it would level the playing field and let top guilds stream their progress live without having to “go dark.”
Rogerbrown from Echo adds that the amount of prep has gotten out of control. With raid tiers being cleared in just a few days, he says this level of preparation is no longer sustainable for players or teams.
Both Max and Rogerbrown are on the same page that the current setup of WoW RWF hurts player morale and makes the event less enjoyable for viewers. To fix this, they’ve suggested several key changes:
- Global raid release for all regions
- Shorter, better-paced raid tiers
- Weekly skip mechanics to cut down on burnout
- A loot system that rewards effort, not just RNG
