The War Within Season 2 Tank tier list criteria
If you want to learn more, let’s determine the criteria for every tier. We assigned tiers from S to B to all existing tank specs. The highest tier is S, being the best tank option for running current Mythic+ dungeons. A place in the B-tier of our WoW tank tier list belongs to the tanks that struggle the most in a new environment.
- S-tier. The current best option to run in Mythic+. The combination of utility, damage, survivability, and synergy with meta DPS picks. This is the most popular tank specs for M+.
- A-tier. A balanced healthy option of a tank. The only downside of these classes is the existence of S–tier.
- B-tier. Selection of specs that have problems preventing them from reaching A–tier. If you are a dedicated main, you can treat these classes as A–tier.
Season 2 M+ tank tier list

Despite the Season 2 nerfs, Protection Paladin still stands out. Its strong utility, survivability, and forgiving playstyle make it a top-tier choice. Vengeance Demon Hunter is also a strong contender, thanks to his latest buffs and reworks, making it one of the best tanks with solid DPS output.
Blood Death Knight and Protection Warrior are also strong choices. The Death Knight’s self-healing makes it highly independent, reducing the healer’s workload so they can focus on the rest of the party. This is especially valuable in the current Mythic+ dungeons, where AoE group damage is prevalent, and healers have more than just the tank to worry about. Protection Warrior remains a solid choice as always, with no dramatic changes this Season.
Guardian Druid and Brewmaster Monk are far from terrible—they sit in the B-tier, not the F-tier. Their main issue is that none of their abilities truly stand out or offer something unique. Guardian Druid struggles with single-target damage in this patch, while Brewmaster Monk faces challenges with self-healing and overall independence.

S-tier tanks in Mythic+

Vengeance Demon Hunter
At the top of our Mythic tank tier list sits Vengeance Demon Hunter. With their damage, strong defense, great mobility, and decent utility, Vengeance DH is the most popular choice for Mythic+ runs. The relative ease of gameplay also adds to that, as it allows you to focus on what happens around you, instead of your buttons. High mobility enables quick intercept of extra mobs or easy kites of your enemies. Another point is that the Augmentation Evoker + Caster combination is very strong, and Vengeance DH has the best synergy with such a comp.
Aldrachi Reaver is a Hero talent option that provides better self-sufficiency. Many talents here correlate and improve your Soul Fragment generation. That results in DH being able to better self-sustain themselves. Higher sustain alleviates pressure from healers as the damage profile tends to be less bursty and more evenly spread.
Fel-Scarred is an option that emphasizes Metamorphosis, making it an even stronger cooldown. It results in a stronger burst, as Metamorphosis would activate extra damaging abilities, and reset some sigils and important buttons.
Demon Hunter lacks utility compared to another tank in the S-tier, which we will get to soon. However, compared to some other specs, DH still has some powerful tools. Among them are abilities like Darkness, Sigil of Misery, Imprison, Consume Magic, Sigil of Chains, etc. And, of course, we cannot forget the most important one, Chaos Brand. With it, the class is a must-have for caster-oriented comps, as it increases magic damage dealt to enemies.

Protection Paladin
Protection Paladin is another valuable pick for running M+ dungeons. All the necessary tank qualities, such as survivability, sustain, and damage, are high for this spec. And Paladins are always kings when it comes to utility. This tank is also beginner-friendly, as its gameplay loop is not complicated.
Both Hero talent trees provide valuable options for the spec. The Templar tree turns the Eye of Tyr ability into a powerful multi-purpose cooldown. With it, every minute Paladin has access to a burst of AoE damage, single-target damage, healing, and shielding. All that is on top of great defensive cooldowns.
The Lightsmith tree emphasizes the supporting capabilities of a Paladin. It allows you to provide extra shield and damage buffs to your allies, further improving your utility options.
Speaking about utility, Paladin has it all. Various Auras, such as Devotion Aura, grant buffs to the whole team. Blessings, such as Blessing of Freedom and Blessing of Protection, can help your allies in a pinch. More specific things, such as Repentance, Blinding Light, Turn Evil, etc, help you keep your enemies in check. Paladins have many tools for a variety of situations. They can also help healers with things like Word of Glory or Lay Hands. What’s not to like?
The Luck of the Draw! from the tier set applies the Guardian of Ancient Kings effect and damage buff. With 4 pieces, your Shield of the Righteous refunds some Holy Power back and extends Luck of the Draw! duration.
A-tier tanks in Mythic+

Blood Death Knight
A nice tank option famous for having one of the most powerful self-sustains in the game. Provides decent damage in both single-target and AoE scenarios. Has some unique utility options that may come in handy in specific cases. Why is it not high in M+ tank rankings? The reason is the famous self-sustain. Blood DK is not as good at mitigating damage. The spec prefers to self-heal back the damage instead of reducing it. This sustain is so strong, that it often allows Blood DK to finish fights solo, as they can heal all the damage. But as the level of the keys grows, so does Blood DK feels squishier than tanks from higher tiers.
Both Hero paths are viable as they present two distinct damage profiles. Deathbringer focuses on improving existing buttons and giving a new core cooldown, Reaper’s Mark. With all the talents, you get a better burst on shorter intervals.
San’layn provides better sustain of both kinds. With its proc nature, you can get extra healing and damage through the encounter. It also increases the strength of the Dancing Rune Weapon, making it even more valuable.
The utility of this spec is quite a niche, but there are still some nice things in his pockets. Anti-magic Zone and Vestigial Shell are great defense cooldowns for your team. Abomination Limb, Gorefiend’s Grasp, Death Grip, and Blinding Sleet provide some extra crowd-control. And let’s not forget a combat resurrection, Raise Ally.
The Tier set defensive proc for Death Knight grants the Icebound effect and damage buff. The 4-piece bonus increases the duration of the defensive proc, as well as reduces the Runic power cost of Death Strike. It also cleaves two extra enemies for the duration.

Protection Warrior
Warrior was always a class about stat-checking enemies, scaling greatly with good gear. The Rage generation is much better this Season. And its management feels better, spec doesn’t feel that high APM anymore. Still, for the spec with almost zero utility, the damage and defense are not high enough to compete with the classes above. You can easily run Mythic+ with a Warrior tank, but we are sure the lack of utility will be noticed on higher key levels. Still, despite not being a top-tier tank, it’s a good option for beginners. Intuitive gameplay helps to focus on the run instead of complex rotation.
The difference with Hero talents is mostly due to your preferred gameplay. The Mountain Thane provides you with fast gameplay based on quickly gaining and spending Rage, as well as some empowerment to Avatar. It has increased AoE, and better defensive bonuses, with damage profile spread evenly through your rotation. The Colossus provides a better burst, fully revolving around a powerful cooldown called Demolish. It is less involved, but the right setup can provide better damage, especially in single-target scenarios.
Utility, although abysmal, is still there. Warriors have two useful cooldowns, Rallying Cry, and Battle Shout. Extra attack power and more Health are always welcome.
The tier set provides significant bonuses to both damage and survivability through Luck of the Draw! Each time the proc happens, you get a Shield Wall and a 15% damage buff. With 4 pieces, your crit chance for Shield Slam increases during Luck of the Draw! while the critical strikes with this ability reduce the cooldown of Shield Charge.
B-tier tanks in Mythic+

Brewmaster Monk
The biggest issue of the Brewmaster monk is the ratio of its difficulty and power. It is the hardest tank spec in the game, while the most optimized performance barely reaches the A-tier. The damage is okay, but survivability is lacking, making Brewmaster even more dependent on the healer. Infamous for the button bloat in previous expansions, Brewmaster Monk became somewhat better in that regard in TWW. But it still remains one of the most beginner-unfriendly specs to play. If you enjoy such gameplay and aesthetics, then you’re welcome to try this spec out.
The Hero talent trees provide approaches to your gameplay. Shado-Pan grants many passive effects to various abilities. It increases your overall performance without adding new buttons. This allows you to focus on your primary rotation. Master of Harmony also grants extra interactions and effects to abilities. It also grants extra charges to some of them. This opens up additional possibilities for your sustain and damage but requires even better planning of your resources.
The Monk’s utility is on the lesser side. The only significant ability is Mystic Touch. That makes Monk a valuable asset in melee-specific comps. The utility options are Tiger’s Lust, Paralysis, Detox, and Ring of Peace. Although extremely niche, they can find some uses.
The tier set proc grants you a Fortifying Brew effect and, as with other tanks, a damage buff. The 4-piece passive empowers your next 2 Blackout Kicks with increased damage and reduced cooldown.

Guardian Druid
Previously, you could only build either damage, which resulted in a lack of survivability. Or increase survivability at the cost of damage and almost no aggro generation. You can find a good balance, but if you prioritize survival in high Mythic+ keys, your single-target damage will inevitably suffer.
The Hero talents are more focused on your aesthetic and damage profile choices. Chosen of Elune is all about Arcane magic, while Druid of the Claw is about your physical, bestial side. That said, Druid of the Claw has some extra upgrades to your utility and survivability, but also more involved button-wise. Chosen of Elune, however, focuses on extra DoT effects and therefore has superior sustain damage.
The utility package of the Druid is pretty unique, hence picking one as a tank may be a good option. Mark of the Wild, Stampeding Roar, Soothe, Hibernate, Innervate, etc, are valuable assets to any Mythic+ run.
The Tier set bonuses provide a damage buff and Survival Instinct proc. The 4-piece bonus is interesting, as the Luck of the Draw! proc also makes your next 10 Druid abilities cast an extra ability at increased effectiveness. It can lead to powerful, although random, interactions.
