Why should you choose Skinning as your profession?
Skinning remains a viable profession for making gold without the added effort of crafting in The War Within. Leather, hides, and species-specific gathers are all useful for Leatherworking, as well as for other professions. Skinners can summon elusive creatures, which can be killed for supplies or tamed by hunters. They also collect meat for cooking and other professions, and create fishing lures.
What is the best combo with Skinning in WoW?
Pairing Skinning with Leatherworking is a smart move. While exploring, you can gather materials like hides and furs from the creatures you defeat and use them to create armor or bags. This approach saves you time and gold and makes you self-sufficient by excluding the need to purchase materials at the Auction House as you advance through The War Within.
Plus, Skinning materials are always in demand, and you can sell any surplus to other players if desired. Similarly, if you’re playing as a Druid, Rogue, Hunter, or Shaman, Leatherworking lets you craft your own leather and mail armor, which is handy.
The War Within Skinning specializations
When you reach level 25, you’ll unlock Skinning specializations. Start with Tanning as your first choice. You don’t need to spend points right away, but picking Tanning gives you access to the Sharpen Your Knife ability, which guarantees a hide or carapace on your next Skinning attempt (with a 1-hour cooldown). Don’t worry too much about your first specialization choice — you can eventually learn all three.
To unlock the second specialization, you’ll need 50 skill points, and 75 for the third. However, be careful with how you spend your Skinning Knowledge Points. Take the time to review each specialization and plan your path. These points are limited, so use them thoughtfully and strategically.
Tanning
Tanning is where you’ll gain most of your extra Skinning skill. Investing 40 points in the center node gives you a +50 skill boost for all leather types and unlocks the ability to refine hides and carapaces into higher-quality materials.
You’ll also receive two additional charges of Sharpen Your Knife. This ability guarantees that your next skinning attempt will yield a hide or carapace, though it has a 1-hour cooldown.
This spec offers great value for your knowledge points, providing a solid boost no matter what you’re skinning. The extra Sharpen Your Knife charges are especially useful for alts — log in daily, skin three mobs, sell the hides, and log off.
Harvesting
Harvesting center node is quite weak, offering Deftness and small amounts of Perception and Finesse. However, two of its three sub-specializations may be worth investing points into.
Luring
The Luring specialization’s central node isn’t particularly strong on its own, but the sub-specializations provide valuable benefits, making it worthwhile to invest some points to unlock them. At 40 points, the final perk doubles the cooldown reduction for your Elusive Creature Bait when skinning Elite or Rare creatures.
While this perk isn’t great on its own, it stacks with the Trained Tracker sub-specialization’s cooldown reduction. If you fully invest in both trees, you can achieve a 40-minute cooldown reduction for skinning rare and elite creatures (Default is 10 minutes).
The War Within Skinning trainer
In The War Within, you can learn Skinning in two ways. If you already have it, you can automatically learn it by skinning any beast in Khaz Algar. If you’re new to Skinning, you can also learn it from a trainer.
- Ginnad is located in Dornogal at [54.2, 57.4]
- Phyo’rne is located in Azj-Kahet, City of Threads, at [42.6, 20.1]
The War Within Skinning guide: Leveling
You can level Khaz Algar Skinning to 100 at the locations below. Each beast will grant skill points up to 100. The mob density in The War Within is much lower than in previous expansions, making finding good spots for leveling Skinning challenging.
The War Within Skinning leveling routes
Azj-Kahet
Farming Vigilant Nestguards at Pillar-Nest North is an excellent method for leveling Skinning, as the area has an abundance of mobs with a rapid respawn rate.
Hallowfall
This area in Hallowfall has a good number of beasts that you can skin, but be aware that the “Calf” mobs don’t drop any leather.
Darkmoon Faire
During the Darkmoon Faire, you can earn 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a short quest from Chronos called Tan My Hide. It’s best to save this quest for later to maximize the benefits of the increased skill points.
