The War Within Inscription guide 1–100: Level up fast

Alongside this Inscription guide, we’ve created a dedicated article covering all 11 primary professions. Inside, we highlight Blizzard’s changes in The War Within professions and provide a user-friendly list for quick access to the information you need. Be sure to check it out:

Why should you choose Inscription as your profession?

In The War Within, Inscription is a valuable profession for utility and goldmaking. You can create Contracts early in the expansion to grant players extra renown when completing World Quests. Besides, other crafters depend on you as an Inscriptionist to produce Algari Treatises, which can be used weekly to gain Knowledge Points and Artisan’s Acuity. Players who use Staves, Off-Hands, or PvP Trinkets can order high-end crafted versions from Inscriptionists through the Crafting Order system.

Inscription has traditionally focused on creating Contracts, Staves, PvP Trinkets, Profession Equipment, Missives, and, since Dragonflight, Knowledge Point Treatises. In The War Within, it continues this trend with some fresh recipes:

What is the best combo with Inscription in WoW?

Herbalism is the natural pairing with Inscription because it allows you to gather the herbs needed to create inks and pigments for your scrolls, glyphs, trinkets, or Darkmoon cards, avoiding buying materials from the Auction House. This combo is cost-effective and provides a steady supply of materials, perfect for players who want to be self-sufficient or make gold by selling their crafted Inscription products.

The War Within Inscription specializations

At level 25, you’ll unlock Inscription specializations. Start by choosing Pursuit of Knowledge as your first one, as it gives you the Algari Treatise on Inscription recipe, which is useful for leveling up. Don’t worry about your choice — eventually, you’ll be able to learn all four specializations. To unlock the others, you’ll need 50 skill points for the second, 60 for the third, and 75 for the fourth.

Pursuit of Knowledge

Pursuit of Knowledge enhances the core skills of Inscription. You can improve your secondary skills — Ingenuity, Resourcefulness, and Multicraft — across all Inscription items. You also unlock the Algari Treatise on Inscription recipe, which, when crafted, offers a chance to discover other Treatises for various professions. The Pursuit of Knowledge specialization is essential for all Inscriptionists, ensuring they can craft their items with optimal efficiency and quality.

Pursuit of Perfection

Pursuit of Perfection enhances your skill and speed in creating reagents, milling, and crafting Inks. Those focusing on producing large quantities of reagents will benefit greatly from fully mastering this tree.

Careful Carvings

Careful Carvings centers on the tools and gear you can make. Whether you’re crafting Profession Equipment for Chefs, Alchemists, and other Inscriptionists, or crafting weapons for other players, this tree is vital. However, it requires twice as many Knowledge Points as the earlier ones.

Archival Additions

Archival Additions covers various Inscription crafts. If you’re into making Darkmoon Cards or the new Darkmoon Sigils, focus on the left side of the tree. For those interested in crafting Vantus Runes, Missives, or Contracts, the right side is your go-to.

Here’s what you need to level up Inscription to skill level 100:

You can learn the Khaz Algar Inscription from the following trainers:

The War Within Inscription guide: Leveling

Nightborne characters get a +5 Inscription skill boost from their passive ability, while Kul Tiran characters get +2. This extra skill keeps recipes orange longer, letting you earn more points. This way, you can save gold by crafting lower-level recipes for more points.

Use Khaz Algar Milling in your profession spell book to mill these herbs:

Getting some Profession Equipment

Since you’ll be crafting a lot of inks in the next step, it’s a good idea to buy the green profession equipment from the Auction House first. This can save you some gold with Multicraft and Resourcefulness procs. They’re not too expensive and you’ll need them eventually, so it makes sense to get them now.

Don’t spend too much at first since prices will likely drop soon. Start with a lower-quality version and upgrade to a max-quality one later. You can craft the Lightweight Scribe’s Quill yourself once you reach level 25, but you might find a higher-quality one at the Auction House. We recommend getting a Lightweight Scribe’s Quill with Resourcefulness or Multicraft. Both are helpful, but Resourcefulness is more useful when you start crafting orders. You could also buy both and switch between them depending on what you’re doing.

You can buy Distilled Algari Freshwater from the Inscription supply vendor near your trainer. To purchase multiple, use Shift + Left Click. You’ll need a total of 1,720 Distilled Algari Freshwater.

Craft the following reagents in the order listed:

  1. 61x Apricate Ink: 305x Luredrop Pigment, 610x Nacreous Pigment
  2. 5x Shadow Ink: 25x Orbinid Pigment, 25x Blossom Pigment
  3. 20x Boundless Cipher: 100x Arathor’s Spear, 40x Apricate Ink

Keep these items, as they’ll be necessary for leveling Inscription. You might need more than what’s listed, but it’s better to buy the extras when needed. There are other recipes available that could be cheaper. If you haven’t reached level 40, craft anything that gives skill points and provides a First Craft bonus.

40 – 42

You can buy Fresh Parchment from the Inscription supply vendor near your trainer. To get your First Craft bonus, craft these two items while they are marked as orange:

42 – 45

If you didn’t choose Pursuit of Knowledge as your first specialization, you’ll need to craft Missives until level 50. Make sure to pick it as your second specialization!

45 – 47

Learn these new recipes and craft the following items:

47 – 51

Then, learn the recipe below from your trainer and craft one to earn your First Craft bonus:

51 – 100

As you work on the Algari Treatise on Inscription, you’ll also start unlocking Treatises for other professions if you haven’t already. Both the Algari Treatise and these other Treatises will help you gain skill points up to level 100.

It’s best to begin with the Treatise on Inscription until you find a recipe for your second profession or something useful for your other characters. Once you do, switch to crafting Treatises, which you or your alts can use.

Keep in mind that Treatises are BoP, so you can’t mail them to other characters. Instead, you’ll need to send Personal Crafting Orders from your alts to this character, which can be time-consuming since it has to be done individually.

Alternatively, you can start making Treatises for your other professions. We don’t recommend making all 60 from Inscription alone, as it would take over a year to use them all.

To reach level 100, you’ll likely need to craft around 60 Treatises. The recipes will turn green for the last 10 points, so the exact number required may vary.

Alternative for the last few points

The last few points might take some time if you’re unlucky with skill gains. If you’ve unlocked any weapon recipes from specializations, consider completing a few crafting orders. We suggest stopping at skill levels 91, 94, or 97. Each weapon recipe gives you 3 skill points, so you’d only need to complete 1-3 of them.

Keep in mind that these recipes require a Spark of Omens, a Bind on Pickup (BoP) crafting reagent that can’t be bought at the Auction House. Since you can only get one Spark of Omens every two weeks, using the crafting order system is the best way to level up with these recipes.

After getting the recipes from specializations, you can begin searching for Crafting Orders.

Public Orders

When you open the Crafting Orders tab, remember to click “Search” in the top left corner of the Public Orders section, as they don’t load automatically. You might not see many crafting orders because players tend to complete them as soon as they appear.

Public crafting orders haven’t caught on much in Dragonflight, and this likely won’t change in The War Within. Many players prefer guild or personal crafting orders because they offer better control over item quality and materials. The unpredictability of public orders makes them less appealing, resulting in very few available.

To make things worse, Public Orders aren’t cross-realm, so you’ll only see orders from players on your realm. If you’re on a low-population realm, there might be very few or even no Public Orders available.

Patron Orders

The new Patron Crafting Orders make leveling up easier. You’ll often get epic armor orders, but some may require more Knowledge Points before you can complete them. These orders are specific to you, so other players can’t help with them. However, since they’re randomly generated, you might not always get orders for recipes you can craft right away.

Personal Orders

To increase your Personal Orders, advertise your services in the trade channel. Most players want rank 5 items, so highlight the recipes you can craft at that level. Also, monitor the trade channel in Dornogal for players looking for items you can craft.

Darkmoon Faire

When the Darkmoon Faire is active, you can earn 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a quick quest from Sayge called “Writing the Future.” To maximize the benefit, we suggest saving this quest for later when the skill points will be most valuable.
