The War Within Herbalism guide 1–100: Level up fast

Alongside this Herbalism guide, we’ve created a dedicated article covering all 11 primary professions. Inside, we highlight Blizzard’s changes in The War Within professions and provide a user-friendly list for quick access to the information you need. Be sure to check it out:

Why should you choose Herbalism as your profession?

Herbalism remains a lucrative way to earn gold, even without crafting items in The War Within. With the recent overhaul of professions that began in Dragonflight, the update cycle for professions is now more consistent, reminiscent of previous expansions.

Herbalism is crucial for Alchemists and Inscriptionists, who rely on it for essential reagents. Herbs also yield valuable byproducts used in various other professions. For example, Leyline Residue from Irradiated Herbalism nodes is required for Enchanting, Blacksmithing, Tailoring, Leatherworking, and Engineering.

The profitability of Herbalism can vary. Lower-tier herbs tend to lose value quickly, while certain rare herbs hold high prices due to their importance in crafting popular items. For instance, while Mycobloom — similar to Hochenblume from Dragonflight — may drop in value early on, the most profitable herbs remain uncertain. However, gathering herbs to earn Knowledge Points might offset this concern.

One notable difference between Dragonflight and The War Within is the increased frequency of tier 1 herbs in the new expansion. While higher-tier herbs can occasionally be gathered, they become more common as your skill improves. Investing in Finesse and Perception can boost yield, though top-tier herbs remain rare.

If you need higher-tier herbs consistently, you can learn Refining from the Bountiful Harvests specialization to upgrade them. Unlike in Dragonflight, where herbs of all quality levels were easier to gather, refining lower-tier herbs into higher-quality ones may be necessary in The War Within.

What is the best combo with Herbalism in WoW?

To optimize your gathering in The War Within, pairing Herbalism and Mining on the same character, ideally your alt, is a good idea. This combo lets you collect both herbs and ores in one go, doubling your resources and boosting your gold per hour. This approach is efficient and profitable since many herb and ore routes overlap.

Herbalism is an essential profession for gathering herbs and related materials in The War Within, providing an unlimited supply of materials and reagents for your primary crafting profession, such as Alchemy or Inscription. By gathering these resources, you can seriously boost your earnings and always have a steady stock of potions and flasks. This combination is lovely if you aren’t into alts, providing valuable support to your guild during the early stages of The War Within.

The War Within Herbalism specializations

Once you hit level 25, you’ll gain access to Herbalism specializations. Choosing your profession specialization depends on your focus, such as the herbs you want to gather more often. However, we recommend unlocking the specializations in this order:

  1. Botany: This specialization restores Vigor with every herb you pick (previously part of Skyriding talents). Further investment allows gathering while mounted, but it requires 40 Knowledge points. This may be less valuable if you already have the Sky Golem.
  2. Overloading the Underground: This grants the Overload Node ability, which has a long cooldown but provides extra resources from nodes. You can reduce the cooldown and improve this ability by investing more Knowledge points.
  3. Bountiful Harvests: Unlocking this gives a flat 5-skill increase. While it’s a decent early money-making option, the initial benefits of the other two specializations are stronger.

Don’t feel pressured to spend your Herbalism knowledge points immediately, but be mindful — they’re limited and valuable. It’s best to avoid spending them impulsively and instead level up Herbalism before deciding where to invest your points.

Overloading the Underground

Overloading the Underground boosts your gathering skill by +40 when collecting Empowered herbs and slightly reduces the cooldown on your Overload ability. After investing 40 points, you’ll also receive an extra charge for Overloading the Underground.

The cooldown reduction is modest, about 15% at most, changing it from 30 to 34 minutes, meaning you’ll need to gather 21 herbs instead of 24 to reset the cooldown fully. The main appeal of this specialization is the extra Overload charge, allowing you to search for more valuable elemental nodes without worrying much about cooldown timing.

Subspecializations

Each subspecialization provides additional skill and some cooldown reduction for specific herb types. For Empowered herbs, the cooldown is reduced to 42 minutes instead of 30.

The War Within Herbalism trainer

You can master Khaz Algar Herbalism in two ways. If you already have Herbalism knowledge, gathering any herb in Khaz Algar will automatically unlock the new skill. Alternatively, you can learn from one of these trainers:

Overloading Empowered Herbs

When you first gather an Empowered herb, you’ll unlock the Overload Empowered Herb ability. Make sure to add it to your action bar because it’s something you’ll use often. This ability grants extra rewards when used near an Empowered herb. It has a 12-hour cooldown, but each time you gather herbs in Khaz Algar, the cooldown shortens by 30 minutes. Here’s what happens when you overload different herbs:

Herb typeOverloading
IrradiatedTemporarily changes your Overload Empowered Herb ability into Arcane Duplication, allowing you to create a duplicate of the herb. The duplicate will always be a regular herb, even if you use it on an Empowered herb.
CrystallizedOpens a portal that teleports you to another nearby herb.
SporefusedSpawns four herbs — three identical and one different. Choose the unique one; if you guess wrong, you’ll get disoriented. For example, if three Mycoblooms and one Luredrop appear, pick the Luredrop.
AlteredSummons a powerful mob when overloaded. If you’re undergeared or leveling an alt, be ready to use some cooldowns. The mob drops additional Writhing Samples.

The War Within Herbalism guide: Leveling

Before you begin leveling Herbalism, grab a Phial of Truesight. This handy item reveals hidden mining and Herbalism nodes and boosts your Perception. These Camouflaged nodes are common, and using a Phial can help you find up to 20% more than someone without it. Even the lowest-quality Phial will work fine — higher qualities just offer extra Perception.

In Khaz Algar, you can find several treasures that provide up to 24 extra knowledge points. The Rarescanner addon is helpful for locating them, as it marks their map locations with small treasure icons with a hammer symbol beneath them.

1 – 60

From level 1 to 60, nearly every herb you gather will grant skill points, making it easy to level up quickly. Mycobloom will stop giving points around level 30, but other standard herbs will continue to boost your skill until you hit level 60.

60 – 80

After reaching level 60, only Empowered and Camouflaged herbs will provide skill points. Empowered herbs randomly replace regular herbs, so there’s no set farming route for them.

80 – 100

Camouflaged herbs stop giving points after level 80, and Empowered Mycoblooms will appear as green. Your skill gains from 80 to 100 will mostly come from finding Empowered Orbinid, Arathor’s Spear, Luredrop, and Blessing Blossom. Though Lush herbs won’t appear as glowing on your map, they still grant skill points.

The War Within Herbalism leveling routes

These routes are flexible since herbs are scattered across all zones. You can stray from the path and still find plenty of herbs. Plus, they’re great for gathering both herbs and ores.

The Isle of Dorn

All three routes here are great for herb farming. Route 1 is the most relaxed, looping around the map’s edge. Route 2 is the shortest, while Route 3 is a longer version of Route 2, perfect if the area is crowded.

The Ringing Deeps

This route is straightforward, forming a loop around most of the area. If you prefer, you can split it in two and focus on one side of the map. Be prepared to encounter more mobs here than on the Isle of Dorn.

Azj-Kahet

Route 1 is quicker, while Route 2 covers more ground. It’s best to avoid the Hallowfall area due to tricky vertical terrain, though it tends to have less competition.

Hallowfall

For farming in Hallowfall, stick to this efficient route. Skip the northern islands — they take too long to fly between, so focus on the main path instead.

Darkmoon Faire

During the Darkmoon Faire, you can earn 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a quick quest from Chronos called Herbs for Healing. To maximize the benefit, it’s best to save this quest until you’re closer to maxing out your skills.
