What is Awakening the Machine event
Awakening the Machine is a new solo world event for level 80 players, similar to Proving Grounds in Mists of Pandaria. It happens in Gundargaz, the Ringing Deeps, and becomes available once you reach Renown 3 with the Assembly of the Deeps faction. Additionally, you can complete it as much as you want since it has no downtime.
How to start Awakening the Machine event
Before diving in, we recommend you use any food and flasks that can buff your character. Once ready, talk to Speaker Kuldus in the Ringing Deeps at [47.46, 31.96] and press the Begin Maintenance button. After being teleported into the Halls of Awakening, click on the box in the middle and choose one of three Awakening Powers similar to Torghast Anima ones, with each one boosting your character in different ways:
- Rites of Flame: You become immune to fire damage.
- Edict of Regeneration: The ability allows you to regenerate 5% of your health and gain 5% Leech during combat, with the effect stacking up to 100 times.
- Ironstrider Support: Call for assistance from Ironstrider Support.
Then, your main objective is simple: survive and ensure Kuldus stays alive during the upcoming 20 waves of mobs. If either of you dies, the round ends, and you must start over. As you progress, the waves get more challenging, but after every five waves, you’ll get a break to do whatever you want — heal yourself or prepare for the next round.
Specs with pets, strong AoE, and burst single-target damage will breeze through these challenges by focusing on the most dangerous enemies. Don’t forget to use your interrupts and crowd control abilities, and quickly aggro enemies as they spawn to protect Kuldus. This also applies to Malfunctioning Pylons — intercept their beams first and destroy them afterward. If a Pylon spawns alongside one or two Corrupted Machinists, position yourself in front of the Pylon and take it out first since it does the most damage, and then focus on the Machinists.
Once you’ve rested and you’re ready, talk to Speaker Kuldus again, and another set of five waves will begin, each one tougher than the last, with different enemies, abilities to interrupt, and hazards to avoid. After reaching wave 10, there’ll be Medbots spawning, which you can defeat for potions to heal yourself and Kuldus if you’re a non-healer. If you’re playing as a healer, you can directly heal Kuldus. Once you finish wave 20, the event ends, and you’ll be teleported out.
Awakening the Machine rewards
Now, let’s discuss the Awakening the Machine rewards. You will receive one Awakened Cache every 5 waves; at wave 20, you will get the final one. Ideally, if you complete all 20 waves successfully, you will receive four Caches in total. However, the quantity and quality of the rewards depend on the number of waves cleared, so keep this in mind. You can find the Awakened Caches in the Ringing Deeps at [47.5, 32.0], and here’s what you can expect:
- 5 waves: 15x Valorstones, 150x The Assembly of the Deeps Commendations, 100x Resonance Crystals
- 10 waves: 18x Valorstones, 250x The Assembly of the Deeps Commendations, 1x Fractured Spark of Omens
- 15 waves: 20x Valorstones, 350x The Assembly of the Deeps Commendations, 150x Resonance Crystals
- 20 waves: 22x Valorstones, 350x The Assembly of the Deeps Commendations
Aside from Resonance Crystals (similar to Dragon Isle supplies), The Assembly of the Deeps Commendations, and Valorstones, these Awakened Caches may contain Carved Harbinger Crests, and a small chance to obtain the Machine Defense Unit 111 mount, a recolor of the 3 million gold engineering one.
Awakening the Machine quests
Participating in the Awakening the Machine event is even more beneficial now that it’s part of the weekly Khaz Algar rotation. This allows you to pick up a Gearing Up for Trouble weekly quest from Gnawbles, whom you can find in the Ringing Deeps at [47.6, 35.2]. To finish it, you must survive 20 waves and defeat Awakened Phalanx inside the Halls of Awakening. Ensure these waves don’t need to be in one go — you can complete them over several sessions.
Completing the Gearing Up for Trouble quest earns you an Awakened Mechanical Cache, filled with Gold, Formulas, Patterns, Plans, Carved Harbinger Crests, Resonance Crystals, and either ilvl 400 gear or a Restored Coffer Key, especially if it’s one of your first Caches of the week.
Plus, there’s another weekly meta quest called Worldsoul: Awakening Machine, which you can pick up from Faerin Lothar in Dornogal at [46.0, 49.6] after reaching level 80 and progressing through the campaign.
Once again, you must survive 20 waves and defeat Awakened Phalanx. As a reward, you’ll receive a Pinnacle Cache, packed with 400-item level gear, Gold, Resonance Crystals, Carved Harbinger Crests, Kej, Restored Coffer Keys, and Fractured Sparks of Omens.
Awakening the Machine old powers
In the earlier version, the Awakening the Machine event was similar to the Vampire Survivors game. You’d pick a new power every five levels, getting progressively stronger as the waves went on. It used to end at wave 50, making things pretty wild as you become extremely powerful. It was almost like a chaotic version of Torghast.
However, things have changed, and most old powers have been removed. Now, when you reach Renown 7 with the Assembly of the Deeps, you unlock a new reward called a Spare Toolbox. While flying around the Ringing Deeps and defeating mobs, you will come across these Spare Toolboxes. These are unique items, so you can only carry one at a time.
When you take a Spare Toolbox into the Awakening the Machine event, you can activate it to unlock one of the old powers, but you can only choose once. With these, you can easily reach wave 20, and if you want an extra boost, you can gather these Spare Toolboxes around the Ringing Deeps.
Awakening the Machine achievement
On top of that, there’s an achievement called It’s Not Much, But It’s Honest Work, which requires you to survive all 20 waves and defeat the Awakened Phalanx. Unfortunately, you won’t receive any reward upon its completion. Still, earning achievements has never been a bad idea, has it?
Final words
Blizzard’s focus on creating single-player content is excellent news. Activities like Awakening the Machine and Delves are perfect for players who can’t always join group content, allowing them to enjoy the game while still earning valuable rewards.
