With the release of Shadowkeep, Guardians were disappointed for various reasons in this expansion, but many forget what guns it brought with the seasons. In today’s guide, we’ll tell you about one of such guns called Witherhoard, particularly how to obtain it, whether it’s worth it, and where to acquire the catalyst. Let’s dive into the history of one of the most famous Grenade Launchers!
Witherhoard Destiny 2 — Weapon Overview
At first glance, it may seem like a completely ordinary Grenade Launcher. However, just like the Fighting Lion (which doesn’t use Special Ammo), this weapon has its own quirks. Witherhoard has two splendid Exotic perks:
- Primeval’s Torment is the main one, thanks to which projectiles fired from this GL create a small pool for 4 seconds upon collision with the surface. Any enemy standing on it will gradually take damage. Moreover, directly hitting an enemy attaches the weapon’s Blight debuff to them.
- Break the Bank is the second, no less fundamental perk, which causes Blighted targets to take damage for 8 seconds and blight the nearby area on death.
In combination, these benefits wreak havoc on the battlefield, causing the most nasty things to happen to enemies. GM Nightfalls and Raids are now not a problem for your ad-clear monster gun while, at the same time, having an excellent support weapon for DPS, which goes well in combination with power weapons like Rocket Launchers and Linear Fusion Rifles.
As for PvP, the situation has become quite ambiguous over time. In modes with many players, Witherhoard can be helpful and, in skillful hands with a favorable situation, destroy crowds of Guardians. In Trials of Osiris, this Exotic can come in handy as it forces you constantly to play around one small zone.
How to Get Witherhoard
We have good news for you because you can acquire this gun right away and not try to farm Exotic engrams. Just head to the Tower. In the Monument to Lost Lights at the Shadowkeep section, and you’ll be able to find Witherhoard. You will need only one Exotic Cipher, 100,000 Glimmers, one Ascendant Shard, and 150 Legendary Shards (they’ll be removed with the release of season 23) to purchase it.
How to Get Witherhoard Catalyst
Most likely, this is the point for which you came to this article at all. If you have just received the weapon, then you can pick up The Bank Job quest, rewarding you with the desired Grenade Launcher improvement from Banshee-44. If he doesn’t have a Catalyst quest, be sure to check the inventory in the quests tab.
After that, you’ll have to destroy crowds of mobs using a kinetic or special Grenade Launcher, or from your Witherhoard, to get 50 Vault Keys. For farming, we recommend traveling to the Last Wish for the second encounter or playing the Grasp of Avarice opening.
And then you are in for a real hell because the next objective, named Crime Spree, will make you gain 300 points by completing ritual activities (Vanguard, Crucible, Gambit), get 200 Grenade Launcher Multikills, and earn 100 Grenade Launcher Guardian Takedowns. However, to get 100 Grenade Launcher kills, you must proceed to Crucible or Gambit to destroy Guardians there. Yes, it will take time, but there is no other way to do it.
After a dozen hours, you can return to Banshee-44 to finally master the Destiny 2 Witherhoard Catalyst. The moment of truth, and… You have to farm again, specifically, another 400 kills to masterwork it. Yes, Bungie doesn’t really like to save your time.
What Does the Witherhoard Catalyst Do
The essence of Silent alarm perk is that you can make the DPS combinations we mentioned earlier. You not only get +40 handling but also a particular skill that allows you to reload the GL after a couple of seconds if it is holstered. To be honest, the Witherhoard Catalyst is a must-have, and we already talked about it in another article.
How to Get Witherhoard Ornament
Luckily for you, you can make Witherhoard look more attractive. There are five ornaments available in the game that change the appearance of the gun beyond recognition: White Collar Crime (Clean white, but it’s a Season Pass reward that you cannot get right now), Drowned in Strife (hive-like with symbols), Cedar and Ash (made out of wood), Splendid Vidua (royal-like), and a new Witherhoard ornament with the Season of the Deep/underwater look (will appear in the game with the release of the Final Shape). We left their pictures below so you can enjoy their fabulous looks:
They can be obtained in several ways: wait until they are weekly rewards for Bright Dust (sadly, don’t wait for White Collar Crime) or purchase immediately for real money using 700 Silver (You can’t buy Collar Crime until Bungie temporarily returns cosmetics from Arrivals Battle Pass, which won’t happen soon. Meanwhile, Splendid Vidua is available only during the Solstice event). Any option may be to your liking, but if you want to know right away whether to wait for Witherhoard ornaments for Bright Dust, then check this site.
And that’s all you need to know about this beautiful kinetic Grenade Launcher. It’s worth your time and effort, as it has rescued Guardians from the most terrible situations more than once.
