Why should you choose Leatherworking as your profession?
Leatherworking remains profitable due to its focus on crafting Leather and Mail armor and Profession Equipment in The War Within. While consumables and item enhancements may not bring in the most gold, they still provide a steady income, and listing items at the Auction House is easier than constantly promoting them in trade chat.
As a Leatherworker, you have various viable paths, mainly centered around different types of armor crafting. Some players specialize in crafting Embellished gear, while others target niche markets that are often overlooked. Choosing your first specialization wisely is essential, as it can be challenging to catch up in gold and Knowledge Points if you’re unsure of your direction.
Additionally, Profession Tools and Accessories will likely stay in high demand in The War Within. The better your tools and accessories, the higher the quality of your crafts, so you can expect many work orders, especially since you can create these items for other professions. Traditionally, Leatherworking has focused on crafting Leather and Mail Armor, Consumables, and now Profession Equipment. In The War Within, Leatherworking will continue this focus with some new recipes:
- Leather and Mail Armor: Leatherworkers primarily create armor, from leveling pieces like the Tracker’s Chitin Hauberk to high-end items like the Rune-Branded Mantle. There’s always demand for new gear and upgrades.
- Consumables: While not the main focus, Leatherworking also offers valuable consumables like Thunderous Drums, famous for group dynamics, and the new Armor Kits, which are expected to be favored by Raiders.
- Profession Equipment: Since Dragonflight, Profession Equipment has become crucial for crafters. Items like the Steelsmith’s Apron or the high-quality Stonebound Herbalist’s Pack are in high demand, sometimes even more than traditional armor.
What is the best combo with Leatherworking in WoW?
As a Leatherworker, Skinning allows you to gather hides, leathers, and scales from the beasts and mobs you defeat throughout Azeroth and beyond. This combination provides a steady supply of materials for crafting leather and mail armor, essential for classes like Rogues, Druids, Hunters, and Shamans. By gathering your own materials, you save time and gold, avoiding the need to buy from the Auction House. Plus, crafting your own gear offers valuable equipment for leveling, PvE, or PvP, giving you a significant advantage in these activities.
The War Within Leatherworking specializations
At level 25, you’ll unlock Leatherworking specializations. Don’t worry about your first choice — you can eventually learn all four. To unlock the second specialization, you’ll need 50 skill points, 60 for the third, and 75 for the fourth.
To fully master Leatherworking, you will need to spend a total of 800 Knowledge Points: 120 for Learned Leatherworker, 250 each for Luxurious Leathers and Concrete Chitin, and 180 for Flawless Fortes.
Learned Leatherworker
Learned Leatherworker enhances your crafting by boosting secondary stats like Ingenuity and Resourcefulness. To excel in crafting consumables, focus on the Industrious Innovations sub-specialization.
Luxurious Leathers
Luxurious Leathers is all about creating high-end leather armor. You can specialize in different armor slots, allowing you to adapt to market demands and fill gaps.
Concrete Chitin
Concrete Chitin is similar to Luxurious Leathers; this specialization focuses on mail armor instead. The main choice here is whether to prioritize leather or mail armor first.
Flawless Fortes
Flawless Fortes provides a wide range of specialized gear for Leatherworkers. It offers sub-categories that enhance armor crafting and provides options for those interested in profession equipment and consumables.
Approximate materials required
Here’s a complete list of materials needed to reach level 62. The materials for levels 62-100 aren’t included since there are various recipes you can choose from. Quality doesn’t affect leveling, so buy the cheapest option:
- 340x Stormcharged Leather
- 305x Gloom Chitin
- 4x Sunless Carapace
- 6x Thunderous Hide
The War Within Leatherworking trainer
You can learn Khaz Algar Leatherworking from the following trainers at different locations:
- Marbb on the Isle of Dorn, Dornogal at [55, 68]
- Phillip Taversil in Hallowfall, Mereldar at [43, 55]
- Ghesh in Azj-Kahet, City of Threads at [44, 19.6]
The War Within Leatherworking guide: Leveling
You’ll earn 1 Khaz Algar Leatherworking Knowledge talent point each time you craft an item for the first time. This knowledge is valuable and has a weekly cap from other sources. Because of the First Craft Bonus, we recommend crafting one mail and one leather item whenever possible. This way, you’ll get the bonus and gain skill points simultaneously.

1x Hideseeker’s Pack: 10x Stormcharged Leather, 1x Thunderous Hide

- 1x Spelunker’s Practiced Sash: 30x Stormcharged Leather, 10x Gloom Chitin
- 1x Tracker’s Toughened Girdle: 10x Stormcharged Leather, 30x Gloom Chitin

Compare the prices to see which option is cheaper, then craft about 11 of that item:
- 11x Tracker’s Toughened Headgear: 330x Gloom Chitin, 11x Sunless Carapace
- 11x Spelunker’s Practiced Hat: 330x Stormcharged Leather, 11x Thunderous Hide
Both recipes might still be green for the last 3 skill points, so you may need to craft more.
70 – 91
If you don’t have the recipes in this section, you can skip ahead to the 91-100 section. However, if you do have them, crafting these items first will help you reach level 100 faster.
Optional Reagents and Leg Armor kits aren’t Bind on Pickup (BoP), so you can sell some to recover some of your gold. Since they don’t require any BoP materials, you can easily reach level 91 as long as you have the necessary gold. If you’re making a profit from selling these items, keep crafting them. Every recipe stays green until level 100.
Leg Armor kits
Item | Reagents | Recipe source |
Stormbound Armor Kit | 1x Gloomfathom Hide 2x Crystalfused Hide 60x Stormcharged Leather | Sold by Auditor Balwurz in Dornogal. Cost: 150x Artisan’s Acuity |

Optional Reagents
Each piece of profession equipment grants 2 skill points until you hit level 90. Since they all require Artisan’s Acuity to craft, you’ll need to use Patron, Public, or Personal crafting orders to earn those points. It’s not worth using your own Artisan’s Acuity for tools you won’t actually use.

91 – 100
Optional Reagents and Leg Armors can boost your skill points up to 100. However, the last few points can be slow to gain if you’re unlucky. If you have any epic armor recipes unlocked, consider completing a few crafting orders to speed up the process. We suggest stopping at 91, 94, or 97 skill points. Each armor recipe grants 3 skill points, so you only need to craft 1-3 items.
If you plan to craft at least one piece of armor for yourself, stop at 97. Every epic armor recipe requires a Spark of Omens, a BoP crafting reagent that can’t be bought at the Auction House. Since you can only get one Spark of Omens every two weeks, using the crafting order system for these last few points is best to reach skill level 100.
Specializations
Every recipe you learn in the Luxurious Leathers and Concrete Chitin specialization will grant you an epic armor recipe perfect for leveling. However, in the Flawless Fortes specialization, only the Beastly Bulwarks recipes (like the Smoldering Pollen Hauberk and Weathered Stormfront Vest) are helpful for leveling.
Recipes from drops
These are the only recipes that grant skill points without needing a specific specialization. All other recipes require investing points in specializations to unlock.
Item | Recipe source |
Adrenal Surge Clasp | Drop: Sikran, Captain of the Sureki Raid: Nerub-ar Palace |
Busy Bee’s Buckle | Drop: Goldie Baronbottom Dungeon: Cinderbrew Meadery |
Vambraces of Deepening Darkness | Drop: World Creatures |
Roiling Thunderstrike Talons | Drop: Voidstone Monstrosity Dungeon: The Rookery |
Sanctified Torchbearer’s Grips | Quest: Spreading the Light |
Reinforced Setae Flyers | Delves: Heavy Trunk |
Rook Feather Wristwraps | Drop: The Theater Troupe |
Waders of the Unifying Flame | Drop: Prioress Murrpray Dungeon: Priory of the Sacred Flame |
Completing Crafting Orders for skill points
After you get recipes from specializations, vendors, or drops, you can begin searching for Crafting Orders.
Public Orders
When you open the Crafting Orders tab, remember to click Search in the top left corner of the Public Orders tab, as they don’t load automatically. You might notice that there aren’t many crafting orders available. This is because players tend to complete them quickly after they’re posted.
Public crafting orders haven’t become very popular in Dragonflight, and we don’t expect that to change in The War Within. Most players prefer Guild or Personal Orders for better control over item quality and materials. The unpredictability of public orders discourages their use, resulting in fewer options available. Additionally, Public Orders are not cross-realm, so you’ll only see orders from players from your server. If you’re on a low-population realm, there may be very few or even no Public Orders available.
NPC Orders
The new NPC crafting orders help make leveling easier. You’ll often get orders for epic armor, though some might require more knowledge points to complete. These orders are specific to you so no other player can take them. Think of them as Personal Orders from NPCs. However, since they are randomly generated, there’s no guarantee you’ll get orders for recipes you can craft immediately.
Personal Orders
You can advertise your services on the trade channel to advance with Personal Orders. Many players want guaranteed rank 5 items, so highlight the recipes you can craft at that level. Also, watch the trade channel in Dornogal for players requesting items you can craft.
Darkmoon Fair
When Darkmoon Faire is active, you can earn 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a quick quest from Rinling called Eyes of the Prizes. It’s best to do this quest as late as possible to maximize the value of the skill points.
