Following its initial success after being introduced in Patch 10.2.6, Blizzard has decided to make Plunderstorm a permanent mode in WoW. The departure of Orlando Salvatore, one of Plunderstorm’s developers, from Blizzard in early October 2024 sparked some concerns among players about possible changes to the game mode. However, we will soon get to see the answers, as Plunderstorm is set to return with The War Within in Patch 11.0.7. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about WoW’s famous battle royale mode.
What is Plunderstorm event in WoW?
Plunderstorm is a 60-player battle royale, with each match lasting about 10-15 minutes. For this event, you will create a unique character and explore the Arathi Highlands to discover abilities, spells, upgrades, and loot necessary for your survival. So, you won’t need to worry about any level requirements to enter Plunderstorm.
Plunderstorm modes
You can choose to play in Solo or Duo mode. You can team up with friends in Duo. But if you don’t have a partner, the game automatically pairs you with another player. In both modes, you must be the last one standing by defeating foes and avoiding the encroaching storm to secure victory. In the event of demise, you can still spectate the ongoing action from the viewpoint of your teammate.
In Patch 10.2.6, Plunderstorm also offered a Trio mode that supported groups of three people. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case in Patch 11.0.7 PTR. For more information, you can check out our article related to this topic, which will be released soon.
The Encroaching Storm
In each Plunderstorm match, players will face the Encroaching Storm—a relentless force that steadily closes in, draining health for anyone who stays in the storm. To survive, make sure to stay within the marked safe zone as the storm approaches.
Plunderstorm abilities
In the Patch 10.2.6 Plunderstorm event, you’ll encounter 20 unique abilities, including 10 offensive spells and 10 utility spells. It remains unclear if Blizzard plans to add more abilities or spells in Patch 11.0.7. In the mean time, if you’re interested in learning about all the available abilities and spells in Plunderstorm, as well as the best abilities and combos, check out our detailed article here:
Plunderstorm currency: Plunder
Plunder serves as the main currency in the Plunderstorm Event, allowing you to boost your reputation with Keg Leg’s Crew as you collect it. Here’s how you can gather Plunder throughout the event:
- Gold piles: Look for shimmering gold piles scattered near enemies—these are easy sources of Plunder ready for the taking.
- Enemy loot: Plunder drops from defeated foes, with elite enemies rewarding you with a larger share than standard mobs.
- Quests: Earn extra Plunder by completing event-specific matches and daily quests.
