Runes are a new gameplay mechanic in SoD. It offers additional spells and abilities, allowing you to transform the playstyle of your character’s class. These Runes are scattered throughout the open world, obtainable through various sources. Most Runes are accessible to characters of any race or faction, except those tied to specific quests or faction-friendly mobs.
There are 12 Runes for each class in Phase 1, 6 to 7 Runes in Phase 2, 6 to 7 Runes in Phase 3, 3 Runes in Phase 4, and 2 new Runes in Phase 5. Below is the complete list of Mage Runes in Season of Discovery, how to get them, their locations, and even coordinates for your convenience.

Specific class mechanic in SoD: Mage Comprehension Charm mechanic
Mages can finish their faction-specific Spell Research (Alliance) and Spell Research (Horde) quests to acquire the Comprehension Charm. These charms are used to convert Scrolls and Spell Notes into usable items, particularly for unlocking Rune Engravings. They can also work with random scrolls discovered in the open world, like Scroll: LOWER PING WHOMEVER.
The Comprehension Charm is available for purchase from certain Reagent Vendors in major cities. You can also obtain it a reward by turning in special books found in the open world.
All Mage Runes in Season of Discovery Phase 5
New Mage Runes
In Season of Discovery Phase 5, Mages get two new ring Runes: the Rune of Meditation Specialization and Rune of Healing Specialization. For details on how to get them, check out our dedicated guide:
Also, unlocking specific Runes has become simpler thanks to Pix Xizzix, who now sells special bind-on-account emblems for 5x Tarnished Undermine Real each (this currency has a cap of 150 and can be earned from Onyxia, Azuregos, and Lord Kazzak). To get these emblems, you’ll need to complete shared discoveries like Dark Riders, Wild Gods, Ley Lines, or Illari Duskfeather.
Once you buy an emblem, you can send it to an alt character, who can then trade it at a Rune Broker in their faction’s city for a class-specific Rune. As a Mage, you can use these emblems to purchase the following Runes from Rune Brokers:
- Spell Notes: Missile Barrage: Costs 1x Emblem of the Violet Eye (becomes available once the Dark Riders questline is completed)
- Spell Notes: Brain Freeze: Costs 1x Emblem of Dishonor (becomes available once the Illari Duskfeather questline is completed)

How to get Frozen Orb Rune in SoD
Frozen Orb: Launches an orb of swirling ice which rapidly moves forward over 16 sec. While it is moving, every 1 sec the orb deals 156.435 Frost Damage and applies a Chill for 30% movement speed reduction to all enemies it passes through. The first time it damages an enemy, its movement will slow and it will have a 100% chance to trigger the Fingers of Frost rune.
How to get Frozen Orb:
- First, travel to Felwood and find Deadwood Avengers and Deadwood Shamans at coordinates [63.0, 9.0]. Start defeating them until one of them drops the Mysterious Darnassian Scroll.
- Afterward, use your Comprehension Charm on the Mysterious Darnassian Scroll to transform it into a Deciphered Darnassian Scroll.
- Find Calyx Greenglow at around [61, 12] and use the Deciphered Darnassian Scroll on him to receive the Healing the Healer quest.
- Locate and defeat Irontree Stompers at around [48.8, 21.0] until one of them drops an Unusual Flask.
- Then, bring the Unusual Flask to Winterspring at [29, 35] and meet with Calyx Greenglow to complete the quest.
- Once Calyx transforms into an Enraged Shade, triumph over him to obtain the Rune.
How to get Overheat Rune in SoD
Overheat: Fire Blast will always deal a critical strike, can be cast while casting another spell, and is not affected by the global cooldown, but its cooldown is increased to 15 sec.
How to get Overheat:
- First, find four Novice Frost Mages at the following places in Western Plaguelands:
- Felstone Field at [36.8, 54.7]
- Gahrron’s Withering at [64.2, 57.7]
- The Writhing Haunt at [53.3, 64.5]
- Dalson’s Tears at [45.1, 51.9]
- Then, unfreeze the Novice Frost Mage using fire spells without causing lethal damage, and remove any curses affecting them with Remove Lesser Curse.

How to get Arcane Barrage Rune in SoD
Arcane Barrage: Launches several missiles at the enemy target, causing 622.263 to 761.316 Arcane damage. This spell also has a 20% to trigger Missile Barrage.
How to get Arcane Barrage:
To obtain the Rune, you must gather 35 books that are scattered throughout Azeroth. The books you have already found in Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 will count towards your progress. In Phase 4, you must find eight books:
- A Study of the Light: It is located within Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands
- Magma or Lava?: It can be found near the entrance to Blackrock Depths in Blackrock Mountain. Do not enter the instance.
- Scourge: Undead Menace or Misunderstood?: You can find it on the right side, just before the bridge to Stratholme.
- The Knight and the Lady: It can be found near the small lake at coordinates [55, 51] in the Eastern Plaguelands.
- Necromancy 101: To find this book, head to Scholomance Castle in the Western Plaguelands. Once inside, turn right and follow the ladders up. The book will be on a table at coordinates [52.7, 26.3].
- Undead Potatoes: Head to the Western Plaguelands and find the book inside the house at coordinates [38, 54].
- Northern Kalimdor – A Comprehensive Guide: It is located inside Timbermaw Hold in Felwood, near the central area.
- Ka-Boom!: You can find it on a shelf behind the Alchemy Supplies vendor in Everlook, Winterspring, at coordinates [61, 38].

How to get Hot Streak Rune in SoD
Hot Streak Rune: Any time you score 2 non-periodic spell criticals in a row using Fireball, Fire Blast, Scorch, or Living Bomb, your next Pyroblast spell cast within 10 sec will be instant cast.
How to get Hot Streak:
- Head to Alterac Mountains and farm Syndicate Thief [58, 67] until one drops a Singed Note.
- Head to the Blacksmith Forge in Strahnbrad [60, 46]. Once there, you will see two bellows attached to the outside of the forge building. They need to be set on fire with one of your AOE spells like Living Flame or Flamestrike. This will summon a level 35 Ancient Fire Elemental.
- Defeat Elemental to loot Spell Notes: Hot Streak, which you can right-click to learn the Rune.
How to get Advanced Warding Rune in SoD
Advanced Warding Rune: Increases the magnitude of your Mana Shield, Frost Ward, and Fire Ward by 100%, and decreases mana drained by Mana Shield by 50% per damage done.
How to get Advanced Warding:
- Head to Felwood and receive a quest called The Wild Gods from a Shadowtooth Emissary.
- Go to Jinth’Alor, which is in the Hinterlands, and defeat some elite trolls to acquire a Wildwhisper Draught item.
- Afterward, reach the Razorfen Downs zone and defeat Amnennar the Coldbringer.
- Use the Wildwhisper Draught item on the ledge so the Spirit of Agamaggan can spawn. Turn in the current quest to him and receive another one called The Wild Gods. Additionally, you will get an Agamaggan’s Roar item.
- Your next step is to collect 3x Wild Offering in Zul’Farrak, Maraudon, or Blackrock Depths. You can save time and run the same dungeon up to 3 times.
Zul’Farrak
- First, find and defeat 2 or 3 bosses to make a Ghostly Spider spawn. If you have done everything alright, you will see the phrase “You feel a shadowed presence” in the chat.
- Then, use the Agamaggan’s Roar item close to the Ghostly Spider. This action will spawn a Delirious Ancient.
- Defeat the boss and obtain your precious Wild Offering.
Maraudon
- After entering the dungeon, find and triumph over Princess Theradras. This action will make a Ghostly Raptor spawn in the water on the upper level near the turtles.
- Employ the Agamaggan’s Roar item close to the Ghostly Raptor, making another Delirious Ancient pop up.
- Defeat the boss and receive the Wild Offering as a reward.
Blackrock Depths
- Defeat Houndmaster Grebmar, High Interrogator Gerstahn, and the Ring of Law. Afterward, a Ghostly Basilisk spawns on the Dark Iron Highway that leads to Bael’gar. If you see the phrase “You feel a shadowed presence,” you have done everything alright.
- Then, use the Agamaggan’s Roar item near the Ghostly Basilisk to summon a Delirious Ancient.
- Defeat the boss and get the Wild Offering item.
Once you have completed all the steps, head to the Shadowtooth Emissary in Felwood and receive a Hyjal’s Wisdom item. It lets you learn the Advanced Warding Rune.
How to get Deep Freeze Rune in SoD
Deep Freeze Rune: Stuns the target for 5 sec. Only usable on Frozen targets. Deals 803 to 935 damage to targets permanently immune to Stun.
How to get Deep Freeze:
To obtain the rune, you must gather 25 books that are scattered throughout Azeroth. The books you have already found in Phase 1 and Phase 2 will count towards your progress. In Phase 3, you must find eight books:
- Sanguine Sorcery: Swamp of Sorrows, /way 70 51. On top of the Sunken Temple, in the room just before the entrance to the raid.
- Legends of the Tidesages: Tanaris, /way 72.6 47.8. It is on a bookshelf located inside the pirate camp.
- The Liminal and the Arcane: Feralas, /way 50.6 15.7. You can access it only through Nightmare Incursion.
- Everyday Etiquette: Azshara, /way 20.7, 62. It is on top of the crate at the Heldarr Encampment.
- Stonewrought Design: Blackrock Depths, /way 48.6 64.2. You can find it on the altar in the middle area.
- Venomous Journeys: The Hinterlands, /way 36 72.7. It lies behind a brown wall.
- A Mind of Metal: Searing Gorge, /way 37.8 49.6. You can locate it on the table under the tent.
- Conjurer’s Codex: Blasted Lands, /way 55.3 32.2.
How to get Temporal Anomaly Rune in SoD
Temporal Anomaly Rune: Launches an orb of temporal energy which slowly moves forward and every 2 sec grants all nearby party members a shield absorbing 174 damage for 15 sec.
How to get Temporal Anomaly:

- Alliance: Garion Wendell in Stormwind.

How to get Rewind Time Rune in SoD
Rewind Time Rune: Your current target with your Temporal Beacon instantly heals all damage taken over the last 5 seconds. Ineffective on targets that did not have a Temporal Beacon 5 seconds ago.
How to get Rewind Time: You can buy this Rune from Grizzby. The NPC is located in Ratchet. In order to purchase this Rune, Grizzby will require you to complete the following pre-quests:
- Shredder Turbochargers: Bring Grizzby 16 Shredder Turbocharger. These are acquired by using the Shredder Autosalvage Unit on Venture Co. Shredders in the Windshear Crag, Stonetalon Mountains.
- Dark Iron Ordinance: Bring Grizzby 20 Dark Iron Ordinance. These are acquired by slaying Dark Iron Insurgent in North Loch Modan, or Dark Iron Rifleman and other Dark Iron Dwarves in North Wetlands.
- Fish Oil: Bring Grizzby 24 Fish Oil. These are acquired by slaying Murlocs in Hillsbrad or Wetlands. You may also use the Auction House, as these items are fairly common.
How to get Balefire Bolt Rune in SoD
Balefire Bolt Rune: Unleash a reality-distorting burst of raw magic at your enemy, dealing 487 to 730 Spellfire damage. Each time you cast Balefire Bolt, the damage of your next Balefire Bolt within 30 sec will be increased by 10% and your Spirit will be decreased by 10% for 30 sec, both stacking up to 10 times. If your Spirit reaches 0 as consequence, you will immediately die. This spell will be checked against the lower of the target’s Arcane and Fire resists.
How to get Balefire Bolt:
- First, you must get a Scroll of Spatial Mending to obtain the rune. You can either buy it at the Auction House or decipher Mage Scrolls yourself with the help of a Comprehension Charm.
- Using the Scroll of Spatial Mending, find and close any Fel Portal to spawn a Fel Interloper.
- Defeat her and obtain the Balefire Bolt Rune.
How to get Displacement Rune in SoD
Displacement Rune: Teleports back to where you last cast Blink from and resets the cooldown on Blink. Only usable within 10 sec of casting Blink.
How to get Displacement:
- Your first step is to collect 4x Worldcore Fragment using a Scroll of Spatial Mending on Fel Portals. You can purchase the scroll at the Auction House.
- Use the Worldcore Fragment or a Scroll of Geomancy on Leyline Confluxes.
- Afterward, triumph over the Enraged Leywalker, who is immune to Arcane damage, and receive a Leycryst.
- You can find the Leyline Confluxes at the following locations:
- Searing Gorge: /way 55.0, 66.6
- The Hinterlands: /way 47.8, 59.0
- Feralas: /way 57.2, 61.6
- Azshara: /way 18.2, 79.6
Once you have found all the items, combine them and learn the Displacement Rune.
How to get Molten Armor Rune in SoD
Molten Armor Rune: Causes 17 Fire damage when hit, increases your spell critical strike chance by 5%, and reduces the chance you are critically hit by 5%. Only one type of Armor spell can be active on the Mage at any time. Lasts 30 min.

- First, obtaining the rune requires Friendly reputation with the Emerald Wardens faction.

Spellfrost Bolt Rune: Launches a bolt of spellfrost at the enemy, causing (* 203 / 100) to (* 237 / 100) Spellfrost damage and slowing movement speed by 40% for 9 sec. This spell will be checked against the lower of the target’s Frost and Arcane resists and counts as both Frost and Arcane damage.
How to get Spellfrost Bolt:
To get this Rune, head to the area outside Zul’Gurub in Stranglethorn Vale. There you’ll need to farm Skullsplitter Mystics, level 39-40 Trolls until one drops a Spell Notes: PELFRB STOLLOTS. These spell notes must then be decrypted using a Comprehension Charm, which can be purchased from Reagent vendors for 6 silver and 30 copper in capital cities.
How to Get Frostfire Bolt Rune in SoD
Frostfire Bolt Rune: Launches a bolt of frostfire at the enemy, causing (* 258 / 100) to (* 300 / 100) Frostfire damage, slowing movement speed by 40% and causing an additional (* 8 / 100 * 3) Frostfire damage over 9 sec. To get this Rune, head to the area outside Zul’Gurub in Stranglethorn Vale. There you’ll need to farm Skullsplitter Mystics, level 39-40 Trolls until one drops a Spell Notes: TROFF IRESTBOL. These spell notes must then be decrypted using a Comprehension Charm, which can be purchased from Reagent vendors for 6 silver and 30 copper in capital cities.
How to Get Missile Barrage Rune in SoD
Missile Barrage Rune: Gives your Arcane Blast a 40% chance, and your Fireball and Frostbolt spells a 20% chance to reduce the channeled duration of your next Arcane Missiles spell by 50%, reduce the mana cost by 100%, and missiles will fire every 0.5 secs.(Proc chance: 40%)
How to get Missile Barrage:
- Travel to Deadwind Pass and speak with the Dalaran Agent at Ariden’s Camp [52, 35]. They will give you Ariden’s Sigil.
- With Ariden’s Sigil equipped, or while with another player that has Ariden’s Sigil equipped, players must find and defeat seven Dark Rider Elites after using Ariden’s Sigil to Reveal Dark Rider, which will reward them with a different Dalaran Relic. Players will know a Dark Rider is nearby if they obtain the Dark Presence buff.
- Deadwind Pass: the Dark Rider can be found at [43, 29] and drops Curious Dalaran Relic.
- Duskwood: the Dark Rider can be found at [23, 47] and drops Glittering Dalaran Relic.

Brain Freeze Brain Rune: Your Frost damage spells with chilling effects have a 15% chance to cause your next Fireball, Spellfrost Bolt, or Frostfire Bolt spell to be instant cast and cost no mana.(Proc chance: 15%)
How to get Brain Freeze:
- Desolace: Accept the Highway Robbery quest in Desolace at an Extinguished Campfire northwest of the Kodo Graveyard [47, 54].
- Desolace: Go to [63, 39] near Kormek’s Hut. Turn it in to Bibbly F’utzbuckle and pick up the quest On the Lam.
- Booty Bay: Go to the inn in Booty Bay. Turn On the Lam in Tokal, and pick up Cherry for Your Thoughts?. Buy her Cherry Grog. She will send you on the next part of your quest, No Honor Among Thieves.
- Arathi Highlands There is Rowboat under the bridge between Arathi Highlands and the Wetlands, around [53, 91] on the Arathi Highlands map. Interact with the boat and you will be teleported to the eastern shore.
- Find Illari Duskfeather and speak with her. For most races, she will give (two equally hostile) dialogue options; upon choosing one, she will fight you. Defeat her, pick up the dropped bag, and loot Illari’s Key. Open Illari’s Loot Cache to obtain the Jewel-Encrusted Box, then open this box to loot the Rune. Night Elves have a peaceful dialogue solution available; if chosen, she will give them the Illari’s Key to Illari’s Loot Cache, allowing them to loot the Jewel-Encrusted Box without combat.
How to Get Spell Power Rune in SoD
Spell Power Rune: Increases critical strike damage bonus of all spells by 50%.
How to get Spell Power: To get thethis Rune, you’ll be collecting books from all around the world, just like you did for the Icy Veins Rune. The books you collected for Icy Veins will count toward this Rune, but you will also need some of the new books that were added in Phase 2. You will need a total of 20 books from both lists.

- To turn in your books, head to a Garon Wendell, the Librarian in the Mage Quarter of Stormwind City [38, 81]. You’ll find him at the top of the tower inside the Wizard’s Sanctum. To get this Rune, you must defeat three specific mobs in the Thousand Needles zone and loot Partial Spell Notes from each. They must be defeated with frost spells like Ice Lance or Frostbolt. Here are the mobs:
- Scorched Screeching Roguefeather [11, 39]
- Singed Highperch Consort [26, 47]
- Seared Needles Cougar [24, 23]
- You’ll need to defeat Galak Mauler to get a Cougar Cage Key first – he is near the cage.

- Troll: Drops from Frozen Makrura in a hut to the right of Razor Hill, around [58, 44], by attacking with Fire spells.
- Undead: Drops from Frozen Murloc around [58, 44] in Tirisfal Glade, by attacking with Fire spells.
How to Get Finger of Frost Rune in SoD
Finger of Frost Rune: Gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect, which treats your next 2 spells cast as if the target were Frozen. Lasts 15 sec.
How to get Finger of Frost
- Gnome: Drops off Timber in Iceflow Lake.
- Human: Dropped from Hogger.
- Troll: Kill Zalazane and loot this rune.
How to Get Regeneration Rune in SoD
Regeneration Rune: Heals the target for (* 42 / 100 * 3) health over 3 sec and applies Temporal Beacon for 30 sec.
Temporal Beacon: Records the subject’s space-time position. 80% of all Arcane damage done by the caster will be converted to chronomantic healing on each of the caster’s current Temporal Beacon targets. This healing is reduced by 50% on self.
How to get Regeneration:
- Human: Dropped by Defias Pillager in Westfall.
- Gnome: Found in a hut on the northern island in Loch Modan (South Hut on top island look for stack of books).
- Horde: Can be looted from the Kolkar’s Booty chests in The Barrens.
- Undead: Dropped from Dalaran Apprentice in Silverpine Forest.
How to Get Enlightenment Rune in SoD
Enlightenment Rune: You deal 10% more damage while you have more than 70% mana. While below 30% mana 10% of your mana regeneration continues while casting.
How to get Enlightenment:
- Human: Random critters in Elwynn Forest will have a “Wild Polymorph” debuff. Cast Polymorph on 6 of them and loot the Azora Apprentice Notes to create the Rune.
- Undead: Solliden Farmstead [36, 49] in Tirisfal has Odd Melons spawning in it. You must polymorph 6 of them and loot sorcerers’ notes they leave behind.

How to get Arcane Surge Rune in SoD
Arcane Surge Rune: Unleash all of your remaining mana in a surge of energy focused at the target dealing (* 226 / 100) to (* 264 / 100) Arcane damage, increased by up to 300% based on your mana remaining. Afterward, your normal mana regeneration is activated and increased by 300% for 8 sec.
How to get Arcane Surge: This Rune is purchasable for 4 gold and 50 silver when you reach Honored with the new Supply Factions, Durotar Supply and Logistics for Horde players and Azeroth Commerce Authority for Alliance players. For more information, check out our article here:

Icy Veins Rune: Hastens your spellcasting, increasing spell casting speed by 20% and reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting by 100%. Lasts 20 sec.

Alliance and Horde: Head to the Raven Hill cemetery in the western part of Duskwood. Enter the eastern crypt [23, 35] and go into the large room on the left — on the wall to the right just past the door you can loot the Decrepit Phylactery from a Dusty Coffer. Then go to the western crypt [15, 38] and use the phylactery on the Slumbering Bones and defeat the Awakened Lich that spawns to receive the Rune (keep in mind that the Elite you summon using the phylactery and Skeleton can pose a challenge, so it’s recommended to bring along a group if available).
How to Get Living Flame Rune in SoD
Living Flame Rune: Summons a spellfire flame that moves toward the target, leaving a trail of spellfire. This trail deals ( 100 / 100) Spellfire damage every second to nearby enemies. Lasts 20 sec.*
How to get Living Flame:
- Human: Kill Kobold Geomancer in and around Jasperlode Mine [61, 53].
- Gnome: Kill Frostmane Shadowcaster and Frostmane Seer [24.83, 50.32]
- Horde: Kill Burning Blade Fanatic in Skull Rock in Durotar [55, 10].
- Forsaken: Kill Scarlet Warrior in Tirisfal Glades [33, 49].

How to get Living Bomb Rune in SoD
Living Bomb Rune: The target becomes a Living Bomb, taking (* 85 / 100 * 4) Fire damage over 12 sec. After 12 sec or when the spell is dispelled, the target explodes dealing (* 171 / 100) Fire damage to all enemies within 10 yards.
How to get Living Bomb:
- Alliance and Horde: Dropped from Stonesplinter Seer in Loch Modan.
- Horde: Complete the Wand to Bethor Questline. To begin this Questline, go to Fenris Isle [65, 24] in Silverpine Forest and kill Rot Hides until they drop A Talking Head. Interact with a grave on the right-hand side of the courtyard to receive the second quest, The Hidden Niche. Fight your way up to the top left tower in the castle on the island and interact with Dusty Shelf to complete the quest, which will lead to the final quest in the chain, Wand to Bethor.
How to get Arcane Blast Rune in SoD
Arcane Blast Rune: Blasts the target with energy, dealing (* 453 / 100) to (* 527 / 100) Arcane damage. Each time you cast Arcane Blast, the damage and healing of all other Arcane spells is increased by 15% and mana cost of Arcane Blast is increased by 175%. Effect stacks up to 4 times and lasts 6 sec or until any other Arcane damage or healing spell is cast.
How to get Arcane Blast:
In the Zoram Strand [14, 23], kill Wrathtail Naga until they drop Naga Manuscript. The riddle on the book will require you to find three crystals along the Zoram Strand, at each Crystal cast Arcane Explosion. Once completed, use the book to learn Arcane Blast.
How to get Ice Lance Rune in SoD
Ice Lance Rune: Deals (* 55 / 100) to (* 65 / 100) Frost damage to an enemy target. Causes triple damage against Frozen targets.
