Rumor: Destiny 3 is shelved and no more big D2 expansions

Destiny 3 is no longer in development, and the development of expansions for Destiny 2 will change in the future.

Destiny 3 never existed

Yesterday, Destiny 2 fans received terrible news about another round of layoffs at Bungie, where 220 people lost their jobs. Unfortunately, this significant loss of employees has led to a lot of changes, as reported by Jeff Grubb, a journalist at Game Bomb and a well-known leaker in the gaming industry, in his podcast Game Mess Mornings.

Destiny 3 did not exist

In April, there was a leak where players first heard about  a project codenamed Payback. According to the source, this could be a continuation of Destiny 2 that completely abandoned the concept of classes. Jeff Grubb revealed on the podcast that now Payback, a.k.a. Destiny 3 is shelved indefinitely. You can watch a podcast segment discussing this below:

Additionally, Jason Schreier, a reporter at Bloomberg, revealed that Destiny 3 was never in development. Payback was a spin-off that was apparently canceled a long time ago. More information about the project will be revealed tomorrow.

Big Destiny 2 expansions will no longer be happening

Yes, you heard it right. Destiny 2 will no longer receive major expansions like The Witch Queen or The Final Shape. According to Jeff, we can expect much less content than usual:

“When it comes to Destiny 2, the expectation internally is that the future content will be lighter, smaller, to take less time than what The Final Shape did, and require fewer people.”

– Jeff Grubb

This is being done because, although The Final Shape was warmly received by players and critics, its sales were worse than Lightfall. Therefore, the focus is planned to be on maintaining the existing audience with a smaller amount of content. Instead of expansion, players will get Content Packs.

Liz, a well-known D2 leaker, shared her information on this matter. According to her, players can expect two Content Packs and two Episodes in the future. This is likely to be the plan for next year’s game.

Marathon is coming next year

From what was shared in the podcast, Bungie’s expectations for Marathon are sky-high, and the studio is confident in its release in 2025. Apparently, Marathon’s success will determine the studio’s future and may even affect the support of Destiny 2.

Gummy Bears is an upcoming game from Bungie developers at Sony

Another forgotten Bungie project is getting a second chance, namely the project Gummy Bears. A new Sony studio consisting of former Bungie developers will develop this mobile MOBA project. Currently, there are no details about the project beyond what has already been mentioned.

Final words

That’s all we managed to learn from this important podcast. What do you think about this situation? Do you believe Marathon has a chance to be a huge success? Does Destiny 2 have a positive future? Share your thoughts in the comments!

I think final shape didn’t sell well because lightfall and many other expansions were a big disappointment so people either didn’t play or didn’t pay. also I don’t think smaller content packs is the way to go, especially with massive games coming. sad but this is probably the death of destiny
