Destiny 2 red subclass rumor debunked — But future hints remain
Destiny 2 devs debunk the red subclass rumor—but hint it could happen someday. Learn what was said, what’s scrapped, and what might come next.

For years, Destiny 2 fans have speculated about the existence of a mysterious “red subclass.” After a supposedly leaked clip surfaced back in 2023, rumors of a new elemental power swept across the community. Now, the game’s director has finally addressed the theory head-on—and the truth may disappoint some, but it comes with a twist of hope.

Red subclass is not out for question

During a recent sit-down interview with Destiny 2 streamer and content creator Mactics, Destiny 2 Game Director Tyson Green responded to one of the game’s longest-running rumors. Asked directly about the infamous red subclass, Green clarified that the subclass simply doesn’t exist—but he didn’t entirely rule it out, either.
“The red subclass isn’t real,” Green confirmed. “That was just a rumor that spread out. It was kind of fun, but yeah, not a thing right now. Might be a thing someday. Red is definitely a color we haven’t used yet.”

So while players won’t be harnessing crimson energy in the upcoming Edge of Fate expansion, Green’s comments leave the door open for future elemental possibilities.
The origins of the Red subclass myth

The red subclass hype began with a seemingly convincing clip that circulated online in 2023, showing what appeared to be a Guardian wielding a new, red-colored power. Despite Bungie denying its legitimacy at the time—saying it was never part of the plan—speculation never truly died down. The theory gained traction again ahead of The Final Shape’s preview events, but the studio stayed firm in its stance: there is no red subclass.
Now, with a direct quote from Green, fans finally have clarity—though some may still cling to the “someday” part.
Other scrapped subclass ideas
Beyond addressing the red subclass, Green also opened up about some of the experimental subclass ideas Bungie has explored behind the scenes. Among them was a poison-themed “Decay” subclass that would have focused on debuffs and damage-over-time effects.
“There was a time when the fifth subclass was going to be Decay,” Green explained. “Something like poison or dissolution, damage-over-time and debuffs.”
Another concept that was floated involved a “Kinetic” subclass centered around brute force and impact—especially suited for Titan players.
“It’s more about raw physical forces, concussions, and violence,” he said. “We explored it a bit, but it never made it to production.”
These ideas, while not active projects, are seen as opportunities the studio could revisit down the road.
Edge of Fate rumoures details

Although there’s no red subclass or Decay powers coming just yet, Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate expansion does offer a wealth of new content. Press and content creators recently previewed the expansion’s opening mission, sharing early impressions along with details on new exotic weapons, armor, and legendary gear.
Among the additions are new Artifact perks, gameplay mechanics, and a range of unique equipment for all classes. For players hungry for fresh ways to play, Edge of Fate promises to deliver—just not in red.
Future possibilities
While the red subclass remains a myth for now, it’s clear that Bungie hasn’t closed the book on adding entirely new power types to the Destiny universe. Whether it’s Decay, Kinetic, or something never before imagined, the game’s evolving sandbox still has space for surprises.
Would you want to see a red subclass in the future? Or is there another elemental theme you think Destiny 2 should explore next? Sound off in the comments and let the speculation continue—just maybe with a little more patience this time.
