Destiny 2 player count hits an all-time low
The Destiny 2 player count is at an all-time low. Let’s examine the possible cause of this in more detail.

According to Steam Charts the average player count in the last 30 days barely holding over 30,000. This drop follows the release of The Final Shape Expansion, where the player count reached a peak of 123,000 average players.

Of course, it is common for players to play less once they complete most of the content in the new expansion. The previous drops were not as drastic. Previous expansions, The Witch Queen and Lightfall, retained average player counts of 60,000+ after three months since release.
Why Destiny 2 player count is at an all-time low?
Destiny 2 has just hit a significant milestone with the conclusion of The Final Shape expansion, which marks the end of its Light and Darkness saga. This momentous event has left some players feeling like their journey is complete, prompting a portion of the community—who had stuck around specifically to witness the story’s finale—to move on. For these players, the saga’s closure feels like the natural end of the road.
Bungie’s recent upheaval, including a second wave of layoffs, which saw more than 200 employees laid off, contributed to the current uncertainty. Significant shifts in Destiny 2’s future content plans—such as the shift from annual expansions to a model featuring two smaller Content Packs per year—have left fans wondering about the game’s long-term direction.
In the meantime, Episode Echoes, the game’s current storyline, is approaching its conclusion, with Act 3 set to wrap up by October 8, 2024. Beyond weekly story updates, however, there isn’t much new to keep players engaged.
Bungie has announced that the 10th-anniversary content will be revealed next week. Most of the content was already leaked, of course, but Bungie can surprise players with new additions to improve the game’s situation.
The franchise faces a pivotal moment as Destiny 2 celebrates its seventh anniversary. With player numbers decreasing and Bungie preparing for the next chapter, the next few months will be critical in determining the game’s future direction.
