Xal’atath true form

Spoiler alert:

Major plot spoilers ahead: This article contains key story revelations from The War Within and the broader Worldsoul Saga. We strongly recommend finishing the Lorewalking questline in Patch 11.1.7 before reading further—unless you’re ready to dive into major spoilers.

A new in-game cutscene in Patch 11.1.7 reveals a stunning twist: the four known Old Gods—C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, N’Zoth, and Y’Shaarj—are shown imprisoning Xal’atath, a moment that visually distinguishes her from them. Her appearance, using a more primitive “voidwrath” model rather than the grotesque, elaborate forms of the Old Gods, underscores that she is something different—an outsider, not one of their own.

This revelation significantly reshapes our understanding of Xal’atath’s origins and her role in the cosmic Void hierarchy. While it doesn’t 100% deconfirm the theory that she could somehow be a fifth Old God, Blizzard is clearly steering the narrative in a different direction. The story strongly hints that she is not an Old God, but rather a pure Void being—possibly an emissary or herald of the Void Lords themselves.

Fan speculation now leans toward a connection with K’aresh, the destroyed homeworld of the Ethereals. Given how many Ethereals are shown following Xal’atath in recent appearances, some believe she may be tied to a corrupted world-soul from that realm, potentially linked to Dimensius, the All-Devouring Void monstrosity responsible for K’aresh’s destruction.

Besides that, the Lorewalking Echo of Xal’atath also takes us back to Argus, where we revisit the pivotal meeting between Alleria Windrunner and the Locus-Walker. Cho provides added context to their bond and growing connection to the Void. Players can replay key cinematics and dialogue, deepening their understanding of Alleria’s transformation.

Void Lords and Old Gods differences

You may wonder what’s the difference between the Void Lords and the Old Gods—after all, both are ancient, corruptive forces tied to the Void. While they share a dark origin, their roles in the cosmos are quite distinct.

The Old Gods are monstrous, physical entities sent into the universe by the Void Lords to infest and corrupt worlds containing slumbering titan world-souls. They are parasitic creatures that grow like tumors within planets, spreading madness and chaos. On Azeroth, the four known Old Gods once ruled during the era of the Black Empire before being defeated and buried by the titan-forged. Though many have been slain, their corrupting influence still lingers.

Void Lords, on the other hand, are far more powerful and abstract beings that exist outside the physical universe. They created the Old Gods as tools to achieve their ultimate goal: corrupting a nascent titan to create a Void Titan. Rarely able to manifest directly, even their fragments—like Dimensius—are world-threatening. Unlike the Old Gods, who focus their corruption on individual worlds, the Void Lords operate on a cosmic scale, with deeper, more existential ambitions.

Conclusion

Patch 11.1.7 has not only delivered a long-awaited reveal about Xal’atath’s identity, but it has also deepened our understanding of the larger Void narrative that stretches across expansions. By drawing clear lines between the Old Gods and their creators, the Void Lords, Blizzard is setting the stage for even greater cosmic threats in The War Within and beyond.

Man, why even put spoilers out? I didn’t even read (so if there are in fact no spoilers then a retitling of this article is likely required). FFXIV goes through extreme lengths to about spoilers. For some reason WoW never does the same..
