Midnight brings one of the biggest updates to transmogrification we’ve seen since Legion. While the core system will feel familiar to veteran players, several new mechanics and quality-of-life improvements fundamentally change how transmogs work going forward.

In this overview of Midnight transmog changes, we’ll break down what’s new, why costs have increased, and how the updated system benefits collectors, roleplayers, and casual players alike.

You may find that Blizzard have reset transmogs on some of your characters. That’s not a bug, and it’s nothing to worry about, as you can simply re-apply your transmog. However, you might also notice that the cost of transmogrification has increased quite a bit. There are reasons for this change, and we’ll go over them shortly.

For now, keep in mind that Blizzard have teased a one-time free transmog change in patch 12.0.1. Because of that, it may be worth leaving your character without a transmog for a while and using that free change later.

Luckily, Midnight hasn’t changed the system entirely, and if you’re familiar with the previous interface, you’ll find it easy to navigate. That said, there are several notable changes worth going over.

First, the system is now tied to slots rather than individual items. This means that once you apply a transmog, it stays active even if you equip higher item level gear or swap to a different piece entirely. This is also the main reason why transmogrification costs have increased so sharply.

Second, the system has become more elaborate with the addition of the Situations tab.

Let’s start with the basic interface. On the left, you can now see all your outfit presets and apply them directly, without opening a small secondary window. On the right, you can still browse specific appearances, including curated WoW sets like tier sets, PvP sets, Trading Post sets, as well as your own saved outfits.

The biggest new feature is Situations. Situations allow you to apply different transmogs to the same slots simultaneously that only activate under certain conditions.

These conditions can be based on your character’s location, current specialization, certain equipment, or even how the character is moving. Using Situations adds an extra gold cost, but it’s a feature that roleplayers and casual players who enjoy collecting looks will definitely appreciate.

Other minor Midnight transmog changes

Some other transmog changes coming in Midnight include fewer restrictions on weapon transmogs. For example, you can now transmog a two-handed weapon into a one-handed one, and vice versa. Collecting higher-tier sets will also automatically unlock their previous variants, meaning a Heroic set will grant you the LFR and Normal appearance as well.

Overall, these changes significantly reduce the amount of farming needed for transmogs, making it much easier to build and maintain your collection.
