- Frost Death Knight strengths and weaknesses: Frost DK is a powerful melee DPS with good burst, cleave, AoE damage, and survivability, which fits any team comp. However, the spec suffers in downtime and has little to offer regarding buffs and utility.
- Patch 11.2 changes: Going into Season 3, Frost DK got a rework with many changes and a new raid gear set. For a detailed breakdown, check the dedicated section.
- Stats priority: Strength is the primary stat for the spec. Regarding the secondary stats, Critical Strike = Mastery > Haste > Versatility.
- Best Races for Frost DK: Although almost any race can be a Death Knight, Orc, Mag’har, Mechagnome, and Draenai offer the best offensive bonuses, allowing you to maximize your damage.
- Talent builds and rotations: Deathbringer is a perfect choice when extra, smaller bursts are needed, providing another gameplay layer through a new mechanic. Rider of the Apocalypse offers passive upgrades for the spec with a stronger burst on a longer cooldown and exceptional mobility.
Frost Death Knight is the most popular DPS spec in the game. As a melee spec, it provides physical and magical damage, fitting any team composition. The spec has a great burst, strong cleave, and AoE. One must learn proper positioning and resource management to maximize Frost DK potential.

We’ll cover changes introduced in Patch 11.2, along with key details like pros and cons, stat priority, talent builds, rotation, gameplay tips, macros, Weak Aura settings, utility, and more.
Frost Death Knight strengths and weaknesses

Before we begin, let’s explore Frost Death Knight strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths | Weaknesses |
---|---|
Can use both Dual Wield and Two-Handed fighting styles. | Involved rotation requires proper positioning and resource management to reach top results. |
Has a powerful burst. | Limited mobility options. |
Has great cleave and AoE damage. | Damage suffers during downtimes. |
High survivability due to using Plate armor. Increased resistance to magic damage and effects due to Anti-Magic Shell. | Doesn’t have any offensive raid buffs |
Both Hero talents specs are viable and can be used in Raids and Mythic+. | Limited group utility. |
Involved rotation with resource management, with a lot of possibilities for skill expression. | |
With a hybrid of physical and magical damage, can any fit team composition. |
With the recent rework, Frost DK was made more streamlined, making this spec more intuitive and easier to pick. Still, Frost works like a builder-spender spec, with many attacks dealing damage in front of you. This requires good positioning and efficient resource management.
Frost Death Knight changes in The War Within Patch 11.2

Going into Season 3, Frost Death Knight received a total talent rework. Many old talents were deleted or significantly changed, providing a better interaction between them. The core gameplay didn’t change. You still use your Runes to get Runic Power, to later spend that Runic Power, and get back your Runes. However, now Frost DK abilities have defined uses, while before rotation might have felt unintuitive.
Many talents have been removed, their effects completely gone, or added to new or existing talents. Below are the new talents:
- Unholy Momentum. Flat 2% Haste increase without any requirements. Replaced Unholy Ground.
- Frostbound Will. Consuming Rime now also reduces the cooldown of Empower Rune Weapon.
- Runic Overflow. Increases damage of Frost Strike and Glacial Advance by 10%. Replaced Improved Frost Strike.
- Icy Onslaught. Adds a Runic Power cost to Frost Strike and Glacial Advance, while increasing their damage by 15%. Effects stacks.
- Frostbane. Glacial Advance has a chance to turn your next Frost Strike into Frostbane, making it an AoE attack.
- Killing Streak. Allows you to consume all Killing Machine stacks to increase critical damage left and also a stacking Haste buff.
- Northwinds. Howling Blast attacks an extra target for full damage, while consuming Rime increases its damage by 75%.
- Frostreaper. Grants a 10% chance to Obliterate to turn into a 2-target cleave.
- Howling Blades. Consuming Rime deals extra damage and has a chance to grant a Killing Machine.
- Frozen Dominion. Removes Remorseless Winter as an active ability, turning it into a passive effect that triggers with Pillar of Frost use. Lasts longer and grants a Mastery buff.
The rest of the talents are updated:
- Anti-Magic Zone. It reduces magic damage taken by 15%, no longer has an absorb cap, but now only lasts 6 seconds and has a 4-minute cooldown. Assimilation reduces cooldown and increases duration to 8 seconds.
- Death Grip. Now also has the same 15-second cooldown.
- Breath of Sindragosa. No longer consumes Runic Power over its duration. Instead, it has a flat 60 cost, creating a cone of ice in front of you for 8 seconds. Consuming Rime and Killing Machine extends the duration.
- Empower Rune Weapon. An AoE attack that grants 40 Runic Power and a Killing Machine proc. With Obliteration, your next Obliterate and Frostscythe is free.
- Frostscythe. Reworked into an AoE version of Obliterate.
- Rime. No longer procs from Obliterate or Frostscythe, instead pricing from Frost Strike and Glacial Advance.
- Might of the Frozen Wastes. It also increases Frostscythe‘s damage, making two-handed weapons a viable choice.
- Cleaving Strikes. Grants a 20% damage bonus to Frostscythe when Remorseless Winter is active.
- Glacial Advance. Now, it is a base kit ability and an AoE Runic Power spender.
- Exterminate. No longer has a chance to reapply Reaper’s Mark.
As you can see, the rework revamps nearly every talent node, adding build variety and fixing long-standing issues like Obliterate cleave dominating the rotation. Frostscythe and Glacial Advance are the basis of AoE rotation. Rime is now procced by Runic Power spenders and plays a key role alongside Killing Machine, shifting the focus from just spamming Obliterate.
Breath of Sindragosa no longer drains Runic Power. Instead, it scales with Killing Machine and Rime procs, making it more flexible and less punishing. Empower Rune Weapon has been reworked into a short-cooldown Killing Machine generator, and talents like Killing Streak and Runic Overflow offer new synergy and burst options.
Another essential part of Patch 11.2 is the new tier sets. In this Season, they provide bonuses not to your spec, but to your chosen Hero talents tree.
The set bonus for Deathbringer provides passive damage increases to your Reaper’s Mark ability. With 2 pieces, Reaper’s Mark grants a stack of Exterminate with 150% and 125% scythes’ effectiveness. With 4 pieces, Exterminate’s damage increases, while Reaper’s Mark can stack up to 15 additional stacks. Exploding Reaper’s Mark grants a 10% critical chance increase for 8 seconds.
Rider of the Apocalypse set focuses on Trollbane. With 2 pieces, casting Pillar of Frost also summons Trollbane for 10 seconds. Trollbane’s Icy Fury combination, triggered by breaking his chains with Obliterate or Frostscythe, and his own Obliteration deal increased damage. With 4 pieces, using Obliterate or Frostscythe will be followed up by the cast of the same ability from Trollbane with 100% effectiveness. Your Obliterate deals more damage to targets affected by Trollbane’s Icy Fury.
Best Race for Frost Death Knight

In modern WoW, race is chosen purely based on the aesthetic preferences of the player. Although each has unique traits and abilities, unless you are a PvP player, those have little effect on your gameplay.
Still, some of them have options to do a little more damage. And more damage is always good for a DPS class. So if you want to minmax, the best race choices for Frost DK are Mag’har Orc, Orc, Mechagnome, and Draenei.
Horde

The best choices for Horde players are Mag’har Orc and Orc.
Mag’har Orc. The Ancestral Call is one of the best racial cooldowns regarding damage. It grants you a boost of one of your highest secondary stats for 15 seconds. Frost DK values Mastery and Crit equally, so getting a boost for either is very good.
Orc. An alternative to Mag’har Orc in case you can’t access them. Blood Fury increases your attack power for 15 seconds. This may not translate into the same damage increase as Ancestral Call, but it is still a nice buff for burst windows.
Alliance

The best choices for Alliance players are Mechagnome and Draenei.
Mechagnome. Although they are really crafty and have the right tool for many situations, what makes them valuable is their passive, Combat Analysis. It provides a stacking buff to your primary stat that lasts indefinitely as long as you are in combat. More Strength translates into more damage.
Draenei. An alternative to Mechagnome in case you don’t have access to them. Heroic Presence passive grants a permanent increase to your primary stat. Although not as potent as one gained from Combat Analysis, it still increases damage.
Frost Death Knight stat priority

- Primary stat: Strength
- Secondary stats: Critical strike = Mastery > Haste > Versatility
Important!
Item level should always be your priority. Getting a piece of gear with less valuable secondary stats, but with higher iLv, will result in a bigger damage increase.
Critical Strike is an essential stat for Frost DK due to its interaction with different parts of the kit. Mainly, it directly affects Killing Machine proc generation. The higher your crit, the more often procs occur, allowing you to use empowered abilities like Obliterate and Frostscythe.
Mastery is the second most important for Frost DK. It provides a simple flat damage bonus to all DK’s sources of Frost damage. It mainly includes AoE abilities, but some procs like Killing Machine also turn your Oblititrate into a Frost attack. It doesn’t affect sources of Frost damage outside your kit, such as trinkets. Diminishing returns start at 76%, meaning you may aim for other secondary stats after reaching that Mastery.
Haste affects many things in your kit, some less obvious than others. That includes global cooldown, Rune generation, and auto-attack speed. All this affects your damage, allowing you to get to your burst windows earlier and get more chances for Killing Machine procs. You should consider getting Haste to your comfortable level. Too much Haste may feel overwhelming, leading to resource overcap and wasted damage.
Versatility is a valuable stat, but it is not picked that much. Although it grants a flat damage dealt increase and a damage received decrease, bonuses provided by other stats result in a higher damage increase. Still, consider picking some Versatility, especially if you plan to run high Mythic+ keystones.
Maxing out Critical Strike and Mastery should be your priority. Then raise Haste to comfortable levels, and leave rest to Versatility. If you have many different gear pieces and are unsure which to wear, you can try to sim your gear. If you want top gear recommendations, check out our Frost DK BiS for Season 3.
Frost Death Knight talent builds

With the recent rework, Frost DK has several talent builds that provide comfortable gameplay for every situation. Both Hero talent trees are good in M+ and Raids, so you can select one that fits your playstyle more.
Deathbringer is a flexible talent tree that fits many talent builds due to interacting with baseline abilities and procs.
Rider of the Apocalypse requires specific talents, allowing you to summon powerful minions while providing extra mobility.
Deathbringer Frost Death Knight
This talent tree focuses on playing around 45-second burst windows provided by the tree-specific ability, Reaper’s Mark. Other nodes increase the powers of your procs and spenders, allowing you to do slightly weaker bursts, but more often, compared to the other Hero talent tree.

This talent tree provides better mobility and stronger bursts every 90 seconds instead of 45 seconds of the previous Hero spec. You are required to use Army of the Dead and Frostwyrm’s Fury talents. This build is less involved when it comes to buttons, and also fits for both Raid and Mythic+.

WoW Frost Death Knight rotation and gameplay

Below is a breakdown of WoW Frost Death Knight rotation and gameplay. This will allow you to see the thought process behind the spec and master the order and priority of your abilities.
Frost Death Knight opener
Opener is a sequence of skills used at the start of every encounter. Following such an order will provide maximum damage at the beginning of the fight and align your cooldowns and abilities for later uses.
Frost DK opener is straightforward, especially compared to some other specs. Depending on the chosen Hero tree, your opener will look like this.
Deathbringer ST opener
- Obliterate
- Empower Rune Weapon
- Pillar of Frost + Reaper’s Mark
- Breath of Sindragosa + Trinkets, Racial, and Potion
- Obliterate
- Empower Rune Weapon
Rider of the Apocalypse ST opener
- Obliterate
- Empower Rune Weapon
- Frostwyrm’s Fury
- Pillar of Frost
- Obliterate
- Trinkets, Racial, and Potion
- Breath of Sindragosa
- Empower Rune Weapon
This action sequence will keep your cooldowns rolling, allowing you to enter your rotation. Priority of some skills may change depending on the talents learnt. Remember that Breath of Sindragosa refunds a charge of Empower Rune Weapon, so consume one charge before using it.
For AoE opener, replace Obliterate with Frostscythe.
Frost Death Knight rotation
Like many other specs, Frost DK’s rotation is built on priority. The spec doesn’t have that many buttons to use, but due to its builder–spender nature and procs, it still feels quite dynamic and sometimes can be overwhelming.
There are three guidelines that define the whole rotation:
- Use your Killing Machine stacks. Many talents rely on these stacks to provide effect or deal increased damage.
- Use the Empower Rune Weapon. This ability has 2 charges; ideally, you want at least one charge to always be on cooldown. This skill provides you with resources and extra damage.
- Don’t overcap on Runes and Runic Power. Keep using these abilities as they create a self-sustaining loop. Don’t sit on the cap, use your abilities.
Below are priority lists for both Hero trees for both single-target and AoE.
Deathbringer
Single-target
- Empower Rune Weapon (if you are at 2 charges/ about to get 2nd charge)
- Pillar of Frost + Reaper’s Mark
- Obliterate (with 2 Killing Machine procs / 1 proc and 3 Runes)
- Howling Blast (with Rime proc)
- Frost Strike (If Breath of Sindragosa is not about to come off CD)
- Obliterate (with Killing Machine if Reaper’s Mark is not about to come off CD)
- Empower Rune Weapon
- Obliterate without Killing Machine
- Howling Blast without Rime (during Pillar of Frost)
If your Pillar of Frost is about to come off CD, save your Runes and Runic Power.
AoE
- Empower Rune Weapon (if you are at 2 charges/ about to get 2nd charge)
- Pillar of Frost + Reaper’s Mark
- Frostscythe (with 2 Killing Machine procs / 1 proc and 3 Runes)
- Howling Blast (with Rime proc)
- Glacial Advance (If Breath of Sindragosa is not about to come off CD)
- Frostscythe (with Killing Machine if Reaper’s Mark is not about to come off CD)
- Empower Rune Weapon
- Frostscythe without Killing Machine
- Howling Blast without Rime (during Pillar of Frost)
Rider of the Apocalypse
Single-target
- Empower Rune Weapon (if you are at 2 charges/ about to get 2nd charge)
- Frostwyrm’s Fury
- Pillar of Frost
- Obliterate (with 2 Killing Machine procs / 1 proc and 3 Runes)
- Howling Blast (with Rime proc)
- Frost Strike (If Breath of Sindragosa is not about to come off CD)
- Obliterate with Killing Machine
- Empower Rune Weapon
- Obliterate without Killling Machine
- Howling Blast without Rime (during Pillar of Frost)
AoE
- Empower Rune Weapon (if you are at 2 charges/ about to get 2nd charge)
- Frostwyrm’s Fury
- Pillar of Frost
- Frostscythe (with 2 Killing Machine procs / 1 proc and 3 Runes)
- Howling Blast (with Rime proc)
- Glacial Advance (If Breath of Sindragosa is not about to come off CD)
- Frostscythe with Killing Machine
- Empower Rune Weapon
- Frostscythe without Killing Machine
- Howling Blast without Rime (during Pillar of Frost)
As you can see, rotations are very similar, be it AoE or ST. An important thing to remember is that priority is heavily affected by your procs. You should not overcap your resources, but also not be entirely without them when the burst windows are about to begin. Pay attention to Pillar of Frost and Frostwyrm’s Fury timers. And adjust your proc and resources accordingly.
Important!
Using Pillar of Frost with some offensive GCD is essential to fit as many offensive abilities as possible. It is possible to do it manually, but if you struggle, consider using a Macro. With their help, you can use Pillar of Frost simultaneously with the necessary GCD.
When it comes to AoE, rotation is similar as well, thanks to the recent rework. For 3+ targets, Frostscythe replaces Obliterate, while Glacial Advance replaces Frost Strike. Everything else works the same.
Let’s check how priority works with an example. Let’s imagine we are a Rider of the Apocalypse in the middle of a mob pack. First thing, we check if you have 2 charges of Empower Rune Weapon. No, but you are about to get the 2nd charge so we use one.
Next, we check important cooldowns. Frostwyrm’s Fury is still on CD, but Pillar of Frost is about to come off CD. That means we won’t be using Glacial Advance. We also check our Killing Machine procs. Hitting that Empower Rune Weapon gave us the 2nd proc, so we use Frostscythe.
We also got the Rime and Killing Machine proc. But Pillar of Frost is also off CD. So we hit Pillar of Frost, following it with Howling Blast and Frostscythe.
Frost Death Knight macros
Macros are special functions that allow binding a sequence of actions to a single button. Those include not just casting several spells, but also targeting them at certain targets. These help you to streamline your experience and make certain things easier. Below are useful Macros for Frost Death Knight.
- Raise Ally. Cast combat resurrect, Raise Ally, at your mouseover friendly target. Otherwise, it is cast at the selected target.
#showtooltip Raise Ally
/cast [@mouseover,help][@target]Raise Ally
- Mind Freeze. It interrupts the focus target if you have it; otherwise, it interrupts the current target.

/cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] Mind Freeze
- Death Grip. Casts Death Grip at the mouseover target.

/cast [target=mouseover, exists] Death Grip; Death Grip
- Anti-Magic Zone. Casts Anti-Magic Zone at cursor location.

/cast [@cursor] Anti-Magic Zone
- Asphyxiate. Stuns mouseover target. Otherwise used on your main target.
#showtooltip Asphyxiate
/cast [target=mouseover, exists] Asphyxiate; Asphyxiate
- Pillar of Frost + GCD. As was mentioned before, using Macros helps you to remove delay and ensure you can fit more abilities into the Pillar of Frost window. This macro depends on the ability you are planning to use to start the window. Deathbringers always pair it up with Reaper’s Mark. The Rider of the Apocalypse has to follow skill priority depending on the situation.

Frost Death Knight Weak Aura
Weak Auras are special settings made via an addon of the same name. It allows you to create various additional UI elements, be it buttons or just gauges and trackers. Due to Frost DK’s nature, having extra trackers helps pay attention to your procs and other resources.
- Kazakh’s Death Knight Pack. A complete pack that tracks your resources, procs, and skills uptime. All the info you need in one pack.
- Wheva DK UI. An alternative to Kazakh’s Death Pack. Provide similar info.
- Killing Machine Stacks. If you feel like going minimalistic, this WA adds a simple tracker of your Killing Machine stacks.
- Pillar of Frost GCD Counter. An important tool that counts the maximum number of GCD attacks that fit into your Pillar of Frost window and compares it with the number you did. Handy tool that helps you learn to maximize your Pillar of Frost damage output.
Frost Death Knight utility
Group utility is sort of a weak point of Frost DK. It is not necessarily bad, but not good either. It is situational, and the lack of offensive buffs doesn’t give Frost DK any favor.
Ability | Description |
---|---|
Anti-Magic Zone | Creates a zone that reduces the amount of magical damage received by party members by 15%. It can be useful, but it only works against magic damage, limiting its uses. |
Death Grip | Pull the enemy to your position. It can be used to relocate ranged and caster enemies and sometimes even to interrupt casting, if it is affected by moving. |
Raise Ally | Allows you to raise a dead party member in combat. |
Blinding Sleet | AoE disorientation allows for the disruption of groups of enemies for 5 seconds and slows their movement. |
Insidious Chill | A stacking debuff that reduces the target’s auto-attack speed. |
Control Undead | Turn a targeted undead enemy into your temporary pet. Limited by the enemy type, it is only good in dungeons with such enemies. |
Asphyxiate | A 5-second stun. |
Vestigial Shell | Anti-Magic Shell now also applies a weaker version of itself to two nearby allies, providing them with a weaker magic absorb shield and reducing the duration of applied magic debuffs by 50%. |
And this is it for our Frost Death Knight guide. We hope it helped you to understand this spec and learn how to play it. And if you need help with leveling one, our WoW power leveling is always there to help!
