More information about The War Within Season 2 was revealed during Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct, and players are thrilled. We took a closer look at all the news about TWW patch 11.1 in our The War Within patch 11.1: Undermine(d), new Delves, and more! article. However, one of the key features of this patch is the new D.R.I.V.E. mechanic.
Recently, WoW developers, especially Ion Hazzikostas, have been actively sharing their plans for future changes in the game. D.R.I.V.E. was no exception. Today, we want to discuss and share everything we know about it. Remember that we get new information about this new mechanic every day. So this article will be updated with any news.
What is D.R.I.V.E.
WoW D.R.I.V.E. mechanic is the primary way of traveling in the Undermine(d) zone in TWW Season 2. The developers confirmed that no flying or Skyriding is planned in Undermine(d). D.R.I.V.E. took a lot from the Skyriding mechanic, adding more dynamics to players’ ground moving. The developers promise D.R.I.V.E. vehicles to travel at a speed that is 3-5 times faster than usual mounts. But you can still use other mounts if you can’t stand this mechanic.
In one of the Goblin race starting quests, players had an opportunity to ride a very similar vehicle. Since then, many players have dreamed of racing in one of these cars one day. And it seems like this dream will come true for such racing fans. These mounts will be highly customizable and have different boost variations (e.g., efficient and chaotic). Goblin Engineering is known for its explosiveness and unpredictability, meaning D.R.I.V.E. mounts can surprise players in many ways.
Many cosmetics for these cars will likely be obtained by completing different objectives. We had a similar system with Dragonriding Manuscripts in the Dragonflight expansion. But who knows, maybe Engineering will be in high demand among fans of car pimping.
How to unlock D.R.I.V.E
To unlock D.R.I.V.E., players will have to start the Undermine(d) quest chain. For now, we only know that players will get their D.R.I.V.E. vehicles early into Undermine(d) content. Hopefully, players won’t face a long quest chain to build their own D.R.I.V.E. vehicle or something like that. It is very likely that we will first get our new ”horse” and only then start exploring the Goblin Megapolice.
D.R.I.V.E. racing
Sadly, developers have yet to announce anything about D.R.I.V.E. racing activities. Such competitive events must take place in Undermine(d). But for now, everyone is waiting for the developers’ confirmation.
In Dragonflight expansion, skyriding first only had achievement races. But quite soon, the Dragonracing Cup Races was added to the game. For example, Eastern Kingdoms Racing Completionist: Gold was a desired achievement, providing skillful players with some pleasant rewards. We took a closer look at this activity in our Dragonflight Eastern Kingdoms Cup: Races and Rewards article.
We are pretty sure that something similar will be added for D.R.I.V.E. in World of Warcraft. But for now, we have to wait for more information from Blizzard.
Community opinion on D.R.I.V.E.
Surprisingly, the community was divided into two camps. Some players met the news with no Skyriding categorically negative. They insist that since flying was heavily reworked with Skyriding, they don’t want to change wings for wheels.
On the other hand, many players are waiting to try D.R.I.V.E. in WoW. As developers mentioned that, this type of traveling was heavily based on Skyriding mechanics, racing Undermine(d) streets can be very entertaining. Such positively minded players also noted that returning to the ground might bring more joy in exploring Goblin Megapolice. From this perspective, noticing and perceiving the details intended by the developers can be much more successful.
It is important that the developers also mention that no D.R.I.V.E. mechanics will be added to Datamine(d) dungeons or raids. However, this might happen once this system is mature and worked out. Such confirmation calmed down many players who were skeptical about the new WoW D.R.I.V.E. mechanic’s success.
Final thoughts
Many players are intrigued by this new upcoming feature. Some are more skeptical than others, but only time will show if developers succeed in making D.R.I.V.E. in World of Warcraft. a new beloved way of traveling. We will monitor the situation and update this article with any news about the D.R.I.V.E. mechanic.
