Greenfield also revealed that the dev team is shifting focus to a new project within Classic World of Warcraft. However, just like the new WoW game mode in retail, we’ll have to wait quite a while for any official news about it.
Season of Discovery was originally planned to end with the release of Naxxramas and the Karazhan Crypts. However, the devs made a surprise move by adding the Scarlet Enclave raid as a late addition to give the season a stronger ending.
“We couldn’t let go of the one major unrealized dream for Season of Discovery: the Scarlet Enclave. We looked at our schedule and decided to take a risk in order to make time to create this new raid tier and really punctuate the Season of Discovery experience with something special. We are very glad we did.”

Defeat Balnazzar in SoD for MoP Classic free character boost

In the same post, Greenfield announced that players who defeat Balnazzar in the final Season of Discovery raid, Scarlet Enclave, before June 30 will get a free character boost for Mists of Pandaria Classic.
This boost comes just ahead of MoP Classic’s launch on July 21, 2025. It’s available to qualifying players right away and serves as a thank-you reward and a launchpad into the next big Classic content.
Reflections Season of Discovery’s end

Overall, Season of Discovery brought a breath of fresh air to both the game and the World of Warcraft community. While there were some hiccups, such as quieter moments and the absence of new content during certain phases, players still enjoyed the season a lot.
What made Season of Discovery stand out was the large amount of new, fun, and engaging content added to the Classic WoW experience. From day one, players were hooked by the Rune hunting system. Said fresh progression system introduced more creativity to class builds. At the same time, finding runes also involved solving clever puzzles, uncovering hidden secrets, and teaming up with other players. Together, these elements brought back the joy of discovery that many hadn’t felt in WoW for years.
Another big highlight was the strong connection between the dev team and the community. Many players praised the developers for bringing back the spirit of WoW’s golden era, when developers directly engaged with players and actively listened to their feedback.
A key figure in this effort is Senior Game Producer Josh Greenfield, also known as Aggrend. He regularly shares updates and interacts with fans on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky. His transparency and fast responses have helped build trust and excitement around the project.
Thanks to this community-first approach, fans are closely following what the Season of Discovery team will develop next. There’s a growing demand for a Season of Discovery-style expansion based on The Burning Crusade. While nothing has been officially confirmed, many players hope this could become the next big chapter for Classic WoW.
