Key takeaways
- Blizzard currently has no plans to allow Season of Discovery character transfers to other WoW Classic versions due to technical limitations and balance issues.
- While Josh Greenfield said “never say never,” and Nora Valletta previously hinted at a future home for SoD characters, nothing concrete has been revealed yet.
- Players are unhappy with the lack of transfer options after investing time and effort, and are actively proposing creative solutions for Blizzard to consider.
Season of Discovery’s development is ending, and the WoW Classic team is shifting focus to their next project. But even as the season winds down, players still have questions, especially about what’s next for their characters.
Recently, a player asked Senior Game Producer Josh Greenfield whether characters from Season of Discovery could be transferred to other versions of WoW. However, Greenfield’s reply suggests that Blizzard doesn’t plan to support cross-version transfers for SoD characters. At least for now.
No plans for SoD character transfers for now

Replying to player Hacco’s question on Bluesky about transferring Season of Discovery characters, WoW Classic Senior Producer Josh Greenfield said the developers are not considering this option. He explained that the differences between SoD and other versions make transfers difficult.
“We made thousands of new items, spells, and other game data that doesn’t exist in other versions and porting that over would be messy at best, game-breaking at worst. Never say never, but no plans for now.”

He added, “Never say never,” but confirmed there are no plans for SoD character transfers for now.
In 2024, Nora Valletta, Lead Software Engineer, told Dexerto that Blizzard was planning an interesting new home for Season of Discovery characters. This place would let players keep some of the unique itemization added in SoD. “Something very similar to Classic Era but not existing Classic Era realms,” said Valetta. However, that place has yet to appear, and it looks like players will have to wait a bit longer to see it.
Fans’ suggestions

Needless to say, fans are far from happy. Although Season of Discovery is seasonal content, players have invested a significant amount of time, effort, and even money into their SoD characters. So Blizzard’s lack of plans for character transfers is frustrating many in the community.
Some players have even suggested possible solutions. User xxran.bsky.social proposed transferring SoD characters to MoP with starting greens and level 85, similar to how MoP Remix handled transfers by giving basic gear and gold while leaving overpowered items behind. They also suggested giving SoD players a carry-over title for future versions.
Another user, kavkav69.bsky.social, suggested that vendors trade SoD tier sets for Classic versions or turn certain items into cosmetics. User Exii added that transferring to MoP with newly added items greyed out could even boost player numbers in MoP.
