“No more name sniping!” Said Blizzard. With the latest update, now, your character’s WoW Hardcore name is reserved for 24 hours, preventing others from taking it away from you.

Recently, Blizzard has rolled out a key change for WoW Hardcore players. Character names are now reserved for their original accounts for 24 hours after deletion or death. The update was confirmed by WoW Classic Senior Game Producer Tom Ellis on X. Players can now rest assured that they won’t lose their favorite moniker even when faced with high-stakes situations.

Blizzard’s decision addresses a long-standing concern among Hardcore players. In every Hardcore mode, death is permanent. When that happens, some players intentionally or unintentionally take the names of deleted or dead characters. Fortunately, with the new system, this will no longer be the case. The name’s owners now have a day to decide whether to keep their names or move on with others.

For players whose names were sniped before this change, Blizzard has yet to mention if any solution is planned. Other than that, players have also reported a bug where deleted characters still somehow exist in the game. As a result, their names can’t be claimed on WoW Classic Fresh Hardcore servers, even if they aren’t sniped. However, Blizzard has not addressed this issue either. So we will have to wait and see.
