Iron Banner In A Nutshell

Iron Banner is a free-for-all PvP event held by Lord Saladin in the Crucible. Going live twice each season, it lasts for one week to offer players a chance to earn exclusive high-end loot.

Participating in IB is easy: you just need to grab and complete the Forging Iron quest, available at Lord Saladin's. Performing well, though, is a whole different story. With power level advantage disabled, damage output and defense capacity are equalized for all players, meaning newcomers and veteran Guardians will compete in a more or less equal environment, and their PvP skill will be the only thing that makes a difference.

As of time of writing, there are three modes on rotation: good-old Control, Rift and Eruption. Once the next Iron Banner dates are announced, we might get a mode update as well, but for now, these three are all we have.

Ranks And Rewards

In Season of the Deep, IB took on well-familiar vendor mechanics, leaving its long-time token system behind.

With a total of 16 ranks on the plate, the event now offers a full-on ranking experience. Playing and winning matches earns you reputation with Saladin, and with enough points gained, you can claim certain loot from the activity's reward roster.

Iron Banner is primarily known and played for its suite of unique weapons. Some of them come as locked-on rank rewards; the rest is unlockable through Engrams that drop from each individual rank-up. You can decypher your Engrams for random gear, or spend some Glimmer and Legendary Shards on focusing them to get specific items.

To speed up your rep gain, there's a point multiplier mechanic at play. Let's say you have just entered Iron Banner this week and want to rank up faster. What will it take to do so? Completing daily challenges and equipping IB emblems and gear multiplies the points earned. For gear, transmogging with ornaments works as well, so you can get a higher multiplier by using IB skins instead of actual items. Playing matches in a row (Activity Streak) also gives a small rep gain increase.

When you hit Legend, you can reset your IB rank to claim extra rewards, including weapons and Masterwork materials. It's worth noting that when Destiny 2 Iron Banner does end eventually after going through its usual one-week term, your rank automatically goes back to square one, but you don't get any additional rewards unless you've reached Rank 16 and reset manually.
