Helldivers 2 brings horror elements into Escalation of Freedom
The Helldivers 2: Escalation of Freedom is finally live, and one of its cool features is the incorporation of new horror-themed outpost types!
According to the Escalation of Freedom patch notes, all Helldivers can participate in faction-specific objectives and visit new enemy outposts. These include Automaton human processing plants where players must destroy their Bio-Processor and a new Terminid territory to venture deep into and retrieve a living larva sample. Sounds disgustingly fascinating and gross at the same time, right?
Interestingly, the mission at the Terminid territory outpost feels like something straight out of Death Stranding, a game by Hideo Kojima. There, one must transport not a larva baby but a human one across the US, shattered by a cataclysmic event and infested with dangerous creatures. If this game inspired Arrowhead, it’s an excellent reference for all the DS fans.
As for the Automatons, it’s fascinating how Arrowhead gives us a peek behind the curtain at what these bloodthirsty robots actually do to the humans they capture from Super Earth. It’s a great storytelling element.
