Warframe embraces romance system thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3
Did you know that Baldur’s Gate 3 was a major inspiration for the Warframe 1999 update? Let’s dive into how that came to be!

Rebecca Ford, the creative director at Digital Extreme, mentioned in an interview with GamesRadar+ that she had long dreamed of adding a romance system to Warframe. Unfortunately, there hadn’t been a compelling reason to include it until now. After 11 years, the romance system will be introduced in the largest update, Warframe 1999. The main factor influencing this decision was the success of Baldur’s Gate 3:
“I think two things really gave us the courage to proceed. Of course, the success of Baldur’s Gate and their romance system was like, ‘Okay, like, people do want this fantasy.’ It does help, there’s no doubt, but we did have, I should say, ambitions of it, that fit the Warframe architecture, on and off… Baldur’s Gate was the push over the cliff for sure, and I’m grateful for that, that was one of the best gaming experiences for me, ever.”

Overall, the 90s aesthetic will be evident not only in the romance aspect but also in the music and villains. If you missed last week’s news, you wouldn’t know that Digital Extremes hosted TennoCon 2024. There, fans learned details about a motorcycle that can be used as a bomb weapon, a 90s boy band called On-lyne who fell victim to infestation and will be villains named Technocyte Coda, with many other details. We also recommend watching the gameplay demo showcasing the first 22 minutes of the 1999 campaign:
Rebecca Ford shared little about the romance system itself. According to various reports, players will build relationships with one of six Protoframes from the Hex group, which includes Arthur, the protagonist of the gameplay footage. Developers are keeping the details of how this will unfold under wraps and whether to expect more of this in the future, but they are teasing their fans plenty.
The release of Warframe 1999 is set for winter 2024, but fans can play the prologue quest called The Lotus Eaters starting this August. Note that you won’t be able to jump into this content immediately, so be sure to prepare thoroughly! We especially recommend trying our Warframe services, where your leveling will progress seamlessly and quickly!
