Blizzard’s first expansion for Diablo 4, Vessel of Hatred (VoH), has been met with an overwhelming wave of negative feedback from players. Despite high expectations, the game’s performance on popular review platforms paints a grim picture. Major complaints revolve around launch issues, technical glitches, constant crashes, and dull, repetitive gameplay.
Diablo 4 Steam and Metacritic scores
As a result, Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred currently holds a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam, with only 32% of the 199 user reviews giving it a thumbs-up.

The situation on Metacritic is even worse. While critic reviews have awarded Diablo 4 an 86, labeling it “Generally Favorable,” user ratings tell a different story. The game’s user score sits at a dismal 2.4/10, based on 9,825 ratings at the time of writing.

As for the controversial expansion Vessel of Hatred, the critic score remains at 85, also marked as ‘Generally Favorable.’ User reviews for Vessel of Hatred have yet to be available. It remains to be seen whether the user score for the expansion will differ from that of the base game.
Vessel of Hatred launch delayed
Initially set to launch at 4 PM (PDT), Vessel of Hatred was delayed by seven hours due to technical issues. When the game finally became available, it was plagued by crash after crash. As Steam user OppY stated, ” Crash after crash, India doesn’t have this many car crashes in a day, if it’s not crashing, it’s just lag after lag.”
Many players are outraged by this situation. They note that Blizzard is a multi-billion-dollar company with over two decades of experience in game development. Given their resources, players argue that such fundamental issues should not occur. And yet, here we are.
Glitches and disconnections
Beyond the botched launch, players have highlighted significant technical issues within the game itself. Common errors have plagued many users, preventing them from accessing the game and its content. As shared by Steam user LashedTulip9704, “Content refuses to activate in my Blizzard profile, even though I have the cosmetics and whatnot—I keep being asked to pay another 50 bucks to unlock the expansion.” And if you’re facing the error “Unable to find a valid license for Diablo IV. (Code 315306)” then you’re not alone.
Disconnections and server instability have also contributed to the frustration. Players report being kicked out of the game during critical moments. Some even faced disconnection while in the middle of completing dungeons.
A grind without reward
While technical problems took center stage in early complaints, many players have also pointed out deeper gameplay issues. Players describe Diablo 4 as having become a repetitive grind, with little to keep them engaged beyond basic quests and combat.
Monotonous enemy encounters. Uninspiring side quests. Boring new area. And at the end of lengthy grinding sessions, players often find the same items repeatedly with only minor stat improvements. As a result, many players simply rush through the game’s main questline just to finish it without exploring the game’s additional content.
