Marathon game director teases an intense extraction shooter experience
In his update, Ziegler reintroduced Marathon as a science-fiction PvP extraction shooter, a genre in which players face threats from hostile players and mobs. The goal is simple yet challenging in practice: survive and extract loot while avoiding the danger of losing everything upon death. According to Ziegler, Marathon’s gameplay loop revolves around completing quests, gathering loot, and equipping Runners with unique abilities and tools.
Marathon reboot details
This reboot is rooted in Bungie’s original Marathon series from 1994 and expands upon the classic’s eerie, psychological atmosphere. Ziegler emphasized blending nostalgia with fresh narratives and environments to build a dynamic, evolving universe. While details on the full game remain scarce, Ziegler mentioned that environments and character models are steadily progressing, giving players a glimpse into the atmospheric world they’re creating.
Marathon characters
Ziegler offered fans a sneak peek at two Runners currently being developed, nicknamed Thief and Stealth. Thief is shown “creepily peeking around a corner,” whereas Stealth embodies deceptive tactics to stay elusive on the battlefield. These characters are expected to play critical roles in the game’s tactical playstyle.
Marathon game director confirms expansion of playtests in 2025
Ziegler shared that Marathon’s playtesting will ramp up significantly in 2025. Bungie plans to introduce more players at each milestone, gathering input that continues to shape the game. Ziegler expressed gratitude for the community’s feedback, noting that player insights are crucial for Marathon’s ongoing development and improvement.
Marathon will come out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, though a release date has not yet been confirmed. You can now add it to the wishlist on PlayStation 5 and Steam.
