The Best Upcoming MMOs in 2023

When it comes to the gaming industry, each year means awesome fresh experiences. The same goes for the genre of massively multiplayer online games. Despite the popular myth about the golden age being long past and the genre, in general, being dead, there are many upcoming releases. We at WowVendor decided to do a list of the new MMO games, hopefully coming in 2023. So without further ado, let us get started.

First of all, let us take a look at new MMORPGs coming in 2023.

Throne and Liberty

Originally known as Lineage Eternal: Twilight Resistance, the project has been in development since 2011. Many gameplay defining features were changed — it is no longer an isometric, but a third-person style action RPG. Eventually, it was renamed TL and now it is known as Throne and Liberty. It is created by the famous South Korean studio NCSoft. Developers promise you a world of infinite possibilities, where every player can find something, be it PvE, PvP, narrative-driven story, or completely something else. Many consider Throne and Liberty to be the biggest rival of another popular Korean project — Black Desert Online. We are expecting this MMO to launch in Q1 of 2023.

Blue Protocol

Next on the upcoming MMO games list is a Japanese free-to-play online action RPG, developed by Namco Bandai. A perfect choice for fans of anime style. Developers promise a story-driven adventure with your character in the center of the plot. As far as it is known, the content is heavily oriented toward PvE, offering players various challenges, quests, bosses, and raids to tackle together. So gather up your friends, or find new ones in Blue Protocol, and go on an unforgettable adventure together! In the last interview, it was said to expect it to be out in the second half of 2023.

Night Crows

An enigmatic project made on Unreal Engine 5. The selling feature is a promise of massive PvP battles, up to 1000 people at once. Inspired by the aesthetics of medieval Europe, the Night Crows is one of the most anticipated releases among upcoming MMORPGs for mobile phones, as well as on PC. Surprisingly, despite the teaser being shown quite recently, we know the release window — is April 2023.

Wayfinder

A very interesting project made by Airship Syndicate. As was told by the creators themselves, each of their products is a love letter to a particular genre, and Wayfinder is one of the online games. What they plan to do with Wayfinder is to recreate memories of playing online in general. Things like going online, chatting and making friends, gathering in various groups or communities, and together going on adventures. The primary goal is to create PvE content that never feels the same, thanks to the options and settings available to players, as well as the special system that reacts to choices players make. Early Access will start in Spring 2023.

Palia

A community-focused online RPG in a colorful world, developed by Singularity 6. An online experience for those who like Genshin Impact, Stardew Valley, etc. A perfect place to chill alone, with friends, or just make some! Palia is very beautiful and cozy. Gameplay has various “village life” activities, like farming, foraging, fishing, cooking, etc. Players will also be able to customize their houses. So if you like such slow and relaxing gameplay, then wait for Palia to come out this year.

Corepunk

Another unique project on our list of new MMOs coming out in 2023 is an RPG developed by Artificial Core. What makes it stand out among its peers is that it is supposed to be an open-world top-down camera experience with a Fog of War. Kind of similar to MOBAs like League of Legends. Developers promise various activities, like PvE, crafting, gathering, etc. So if you were or still are a fan of those multiplayer RPG maps in Warcraft III, then Corepunk can be the best new MMO for you!

Hytale

Another upcoming MMO is a sandbox-style online RPG, developed by Hypixel Studios, creators of the Hypixel server in Minecraft. It Is pretty similar in its appearance, gameplay, and overall spirit to the aforementioned Minecraft. Developers promise a combination of a sandbox and roleplaying depth. One unique feature of Hytale is its powerful creation tools, which allow players to create their own content and modules. So if you want to play a real “Minecraft Online”, Hytale is definitely worth trying out. The release date is a little bit vague though, but as far as we know, it is planned to be released in 2023.

The Day Before

This time on the list of newest MMOs is not an RPG, but an open-world survival project, developed by FNTASTIC. A very intriguing participant on our list, mostly because of the shady buzz surrounding The Day Before. The description promises a thrilling experience of post-apocalyptic America, filled with zombies. Team up with the others, explore deserted cities full of dangerous mutated creatures, drive realistic vehicles, and sell your finds at survivors’ settlements. At least this is what is supposed to be, but players are very skeptical about it. Some even go as far as claiming the gameplay trailers are fake. The truth will be revealed soon. The release date is set — March 1st, 2023.

Mad World — Age of Darkness

A new upcoming MMORPG, developed by Korean studio Jandisoft, comes out sometime in 2023. The defining feature of Mad World — Age of Darkness is the art style, which is similar to games like Darkest Dungeon. Although cartoonish at first glance, the game has a gory and dark atmosphere, with an exceptionally ugly (in a good way) monster design. The gameplay is isometric and promises enough content for both PvP and PvE enjoyers.

Chrono Odyssey

The Korean project was teased back in 2020 and developed by Npixel. There is not much known about the game, but it’s one of the MMORPG releases of 2023. Developers promised a vast world to explore. A grand story that “transcends both time and space”, with about 18 playable classes, and music from Chirs Velasco (Resident Evil 7, God of War, Bloodborne). Chrono Odyssey is supposed to be multiplatform for PC, PS5, and Mobile.

Ares: Rise of the Guardians

Another Korean game is on our list of upcoming MMORPGs in 2023, developed by Second Dive and Kakao Games. Players are offered a post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi world, where humans have to fight against invading robots. And to do that, they have to use mechs of their own, which are fully customizable with various weaponry. Fights are supposed to be on the ground and in the air. So if you are a fan of mecha and such settings, Ares: Rise of the Guardians is one to try out. As we know, the release window is in the Q4 of 2023.

ODIN: Valhalla Rising

One more name in our list of new MMOs of 2023 from Kakao Games, but this time developed by Lionheart Studios (not the Fable one). As the name suggests, we have a setting based on Norse mythology. Mostly a mobile project (comes out on PC as well), ODIN: Valhalla Rising aims to push the limits of mobile platforms. Developers said there will be a fully open world without loading screens, large-scale combat with various bosses, several unique continents, and much more. The graphics are to be the ones to rival that of the Black Desert Online. How much truth in all these statements we can see sometime in 2023. If you want to play something big and serious on your phone, then ODIN: Valhalla Rising can be the one, so stay tuned.

And this is it for our list of MMOs coming out in 2023. It does not mean that we are done, since there is still some information to share. Some projects do not necessarily belong to the genre but have various online or multiplayer elements. And some MMORPGs are not being released in 2023, but this year still has some big news about them. So let us take a closer look.

Ashes of Creation

The next big MMO that almost every fan of the genre knows, or at least heard of, is the Ashes of Creation. Slowly but steadily, the game moves toward its release. And even if we really want to call it the most anticipated MMORPG of 2023 — it will probably be out sometime in 2024. This year though we can expect to get the exact date. Devs promise players that their actions will have a lasting effect on the world. And it is not just some advertisement of the local storyline. The key feature is that everything can be changed in the game at the hands of the players. There is not gonna be a static world — players will be able to build and destroy cities, play with politics, participate in war events, etc. This will lead to new NPC appearing, quests and secrets to complete, and much more. It is quite a unique approach to a multiplayer experience. We are very excited to see what the future holds for the Ashes of Creation.

Diablo IV

The name does not really need an introduction, but here we are. The fourth installment in the famous Diablo franchise by Blizzard. Although not fully multiplayer, it is still an RPG with multiplayer functions. You can play with your friends, do various PvE content together, or fight other players in PvP. The classic isometric gameplay is in place as always, so we are sure Diablo IV will provide a lot of content to enjoy with others. The release date is June 6th, 2023.

Final Fantasy XIV Online

The award-winning juggernaut of the genre that is FFXIV is moving towards its next 7.0 expansion, so we mention it in our article about the best upcoming MMOs. It is expected to be released in the summer or fall of 2024. 2023 is still a big year for FFXIV. Starting on July 28th of this year, a series of worldwide fanfests will happen, with one in North America being the first. These events are packed with all the juicy info about the upcoming expansion, such as the name, the release date, new features, jobs, etc. As you probably heard, the current Endwalker expansion ended almost a 10-year-long storyline that started even before the A Realm Reborn reboot. And the next 7.0 expansion is supposed to be a step into a fresh journey. We also know that 7.0 will bring a graphic update to Final Fantasy XIV since Square Enix plans to support it for another 10 years. And we can speculate that female Hrothgar will also be added as a possible option for character creation. So stay tuned for more Final Fantasy XIV news this year.

As the article is being written, FFXIV just received a patch 6.3 — Gods Revel, Lands Tremble. It includes a 24-people alliance raid, a new PvP map and Series (free PvP battle pass), MSQ continuation with a fierce Trial, balance changes to jobs with Paladin rework, new crafting gear, etc. And in several weeks, the hardest difficulty Ultimate fight — The Omega Protocol — will be released.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Not much news right now about upcoming DLCs or expansions, but we have a date for the ESO Global Reveal Event, which is January 25th, 2023. What is going to be revealed though is a thing to see, but we hope it is something big and exciting.

“Riot MMO”

Although we still do not have a name, this project is always in talks when it comes to new MMO releases. With their several projects and Arcane series, Riot Games managed to create Runeterra. The vibrant and multifaceted world with deep lore. Place where different settings harmonically combine. And MMORPG is just the right genre to use such a perfect foundation. Sadly there has been no news since the announcement. But as we were getting some news on project L (the fighting game in the Runeterra setting) last year, we hope 2023 will be the one when we hear more about this game.

We hope this article about upcoming MMO releases helped you to learn some news about things to come in 2023 and beyond. And do not forget, if you have struggles in your games, our MMO boosting is always there to help you. We wish you a fantastic year and hope you will find something for your heart among MMORPGs coming soon.
