The Super Mario Bros. Movie has made history. Until now, it has amassed more than $500 million at the box office across the globe. Thus, dethroning the former record holder: Warcraft. But the Brooklyn plumbers won’t be stopping there.
Released on April 5, the film had an incredibly strong opening weekend and has been dominating the box office ever since. It set a new record for the best start for a video game adaptation and the best opening weekend for an animated film in history. This impressive feat even outshined Frozen II, the beloved child of Disney, the giant of the animation industry. Not stopping there, the Mario squad even squished Ant-Man’s record ($474) by becoming the highest-grossing blockbuster of 2023 both in the US and globally.
According to Variety, the production budget for Mario and Luigi’s adventure was $100 million. It means it has already made an impressive five-fold return on investment. Yet, the numbers are still growing.
The film’s success can be attributed to its widespread appeal to both children and adults, its nostalgia factor, and its clever marketing campaign. And, of course, the adorable love song of the Big Bad Bowser.
The film ends with a teaser for a potential sequel. And even Nintendo and Illumination have openly expressed plans for future projects. With this big win coming from the Mushroom Kingdom, fans are definitely in for a lot more treats from their favorite game developer soon.
