Call of duty killer Ubisoft’s XDefiant hits 7.6 million players in its first release week. Will Ubisoft be able to keep it up?

XDefiant is a free-to-play first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft San Francisco and released on May 21, 2024. XDefiant is a crossover with characters from other Ubisoft titles, such as Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon. Characters are divided into factions and classes as well as 6 vs 6 teams, and the objectives of the game are classic zone control, points capture, escort, king of the hill, and deathmatch. Yesterday, it was announced that almost 8 million unique players downloaded and launched XDefiant in the first week after its release.

Some say that XDefiant will be the killer of the sagging Call of Duty franchise, taking all the best from it, and some believe that this is another CoD clone. XDefiant encountered some difficulties at launch, including registration issues and game server errors. However, Ubisoft reported that XDefiant gained one million players in the first 2.5 hours after launch, and after two days, the number of unique players was already three million. Ubisoft reportedly aimed to reach five million players within a month of launch.

After problems at the start, the developers reported that their priority was maintaining the game servers and netcode, which they apparently managed to do. XDefiant is currently available on PC (Ubisoft Connect exclusively), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. As of May 27, the total number of concurrent players across all platforms was 700,000.

Among other things, critics also praised the new shooter from Ubisoft quite highly. XDefiant has a score of 71 out of 100 on Metacritic. The average user score is 4.8 points out of 10 across all platforms. Critics say that XDefiant does an excellent job of being a fast-paced and fun shooter, but it lacks originality compared to its competitors. Players complain about the lack of a SBMM system, weapon balance, and lack of chat, but many note that XDefiant is a fun game with pleasant movement and gameplay.

However, both critics and players agree that if Ubisoft continues to develop XDefiant, adding more personality to the game and supporting it by releasing new maps, weapons, and characters, XDefiant could have a great future.
