Bungie Dev Criticizes Diablo IV, Blizzard President Reacts

A recent Twitter exchange has caught the attention of gaming enthusiasts. Apparently, a Bungie engineer recently expressed his dissatisfaction with Diablo IV’s system. More specifically: how the enemies scale in the game. Calling it “lazy,” the dev has successfully captured the community’s attention. And Blizzard President Mike Ybarra himself has replied.

The comments were made by Chad Jessup. He’s a Senior Distributed Systems Engineer at Bungie. To be fair, he was speaking about the choices of including enemy scaling in a game. He claimed that it undermined various play styles and diluted the sense of empowerment for players. However, what makes his tweet notable is the mention of Diablo IV. Thus, this has prompted a swift and pointed response from Blizzard President Mike Ybarra.

Jessup later clarified that his critique was not a condemnation of the entire game. Rather, he was targeting said specific aspect. Realizing the potential misinterpretation of his original tweet, Jessup posted a follow-up comment. He emphasized his admiration for Diablo IV as a whole. Admitting that his wording could have been better, the Bungie dev deleted the original tweet

As Diablo IV approaches its two-week mark since release, it has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. There are, of course, technical issues as well as dungeon over-nerfing. Thus, sparking division among fans’ opinions about the game.
