2023 is truly going to be a big year for gamers, as many long-awaited releases are scheduled to come out. This list will contain the most anticipated games of 2023, which are coincidentally some of the most hyped in recent years. From open-world adventures to Metroidvanias, this year has it all.

Hogwarts Legacy

Release: February 10

The release is awaited with bated breath by the many fans of Harry Potter that are long-overdue for a good piece of content in the Wizarding World-verse. The Legacy will be an open-world RPG with character creation. It’s an awesome prospect that many HP fans will be ecstatic about. Hence why it’s among the most anticipated upcoming games of 2023.

The devs promise tons of fun activities you might do as a magical student, in addition to quests and a generally rich environment. One of the earliest details about the title was the ability to learn and cast a wide variety of spells. As a year 5 student, you’ll be open to a lot of advanced magic.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Release: March 4

In addition to fully new games 2023 is getting a visually improved RE4. Besides this, devs will rework environments and polish the flaws. What’s more, it seems like the fans are getting extra content. However, judging by the previous remakes Capcom rolled out, it may be hit-or-miss.

Thankfully, they promised to stay very close to the original game and avoid mistakes of the RE3 remake. They won’t be cutting any content, and both fights and horror elements should be high quality. They are also largely getting rid of QTE, which is good. If everything works out, it may be among the best 2023 video game releases.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Release: March 17

Jedi: Survivor is the continuation of 2019’s Jedi: Fallen Order by Respawn. The previous installation made quite a name, allowing the devs to create an even better product. The sequel will be a single-player souls-like linear adventure, like its predecessor. The combat, character customization, and other core features will be massively expanded.

The story is obviously new and longer. The combat will be more nuanced. For instance, you’ll be able to choose between 5 different battle stances and generally be more tactical while fighting. Moreover, it’s confirmed that there will be more open-world potential, although the journey is still linear.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Release: May 12

The new Zelda is one of the most hyped among the 2023 upcoming games. The fans have been waiting 5 years for it. Like the previous installation, Tears of the Kingdom will take place in Hyrule as a massive open-world adventure. The game will feature a lot of the same mechanics and aspects as the original, but with a lot more to offer.

Trailers showed a good deal of vertical mobility. You’ll be able to travel through the skies and visit the curious flying islands that weren’t in Hyrule before. Not many details are known, but Nintendo seems to take everything people loved about BotW and expand on it. It’s probably going to be one of the top 10 best games that 2023 will have.

Starfield

Release: spring-summer

Bethesda has been hyping up Starfield as the next big product of their creation since Fallout 4. It’ll take place in space — developers promised a vast RPG with a lot of freedom in exploring the big unknown. You’ll visit planets, progress your character, customize your ship, and do much more of the typical roleplay.

It can be compared to No Man’s Sky, although with a lot more realism and shooting. Like NMS, most worlds will be generated procedurally. The way Bethesda does their procedural generation, it’s not promising. Still, the most important planets are made manually, and there are plenty of curious features, so there’s still hope.

Diablo 4

Release: June 6

Diablo is one of the most anticipated multiplayer games of 2023, actually. They promise a massive open world with a lot of potential for cooperation and multiplayer. The action is still there, and it’s going to be expanded. The world is massive, and you’ll be able to travel it on a mount. There are also world bosses and PVP for multiplayer.

The visuals are amongst the best changes. From what Blizzard showed, it’ll be a gritty realistic adventure in a world largely devoid of warmth (like Diablo 1 & 2). Obviously, it’s not the biggest priority, but it is a massive bonus. It also won’t be pay-to-win for a change, which is good for one of the top 10 most anticipated games of 2023.

Final Fantasy XVI

Release: June 22

FFXVI doesn’t really tie to the previous games, it’s mostly a unique creation. You don’t have to play the older games to enjoy the experience of FF XVI. The genre is similar — it’s still an epic action RPG with big swords and tons of activities. Unlike older titles, though, it won’t have any turn-based gameplay at all.

The setting is a large continent carved up by 6 unique nations. It’s a dying land, and the countries are readying for war. Their most precious resource — the arcane crystals — is fading. They’ll somehow be central to the plot, but to what end is unknown. Lots of over-the-top effects, fighting, and exploring are included.

Baldur’s Gate III

Release: August

You’ve likely seen parts of BG3 already on YouTube or elsewhere. Its early sections were released in 2020. It was just a small, underdeveloped chunk of the main product coming out in August. It’s likely one of the most anticipated games 2023 will offer for the genre of fantasy RPG.

It’s set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons — an impossibly rich world renowned for its freedom and depth. After you create your character from scratch, you’ll be able to explore the world on your own terms. Uniquely for this genre, the character interactions are just as enticing visually as they are in terms of substance.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Release: unknown

Silksong is one of the most awaited games 2023 has to offer, at least among platformers. There might not be as many people waiting, but they do wait intensely. The original Hollow Knight came out in 2017, and it was a blast. Since then, Team Cherry kept a tight intrigue around the sequel. Not much is known, except that we’ll play as Hornet.

The locations and enemies are going to be completely new. Silksong retains a rich open world from before, but it adds a score of actual side quests. Furthermore, it’ll be bigger, with more bosses, encounters, and story. If the spirit remains the same, it might be one of the most wanted games 2023 is giving players.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Release: unknown

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 might become one of the most popular video games in 2023. The previous installation — Call of Pripyat — came out in 2009. Since then, the sequel was aborted several times until restarting development in 2018. According to trailers and commentaries, you can expect the same general core with a different frame.

The previous releases captivated their audience with their gameplay, ambiance, and world-building. This time, you’ll get a more story-driven experience with cutscenes, dialogues, and a more prominent plotline. Artifacts, anomalies, mutants, stalkers, bandits, and lots of shooting are still integral to the gameplay.

Summary

That’s not all, of course. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Hades 2, Silent Hill 2, Forspoken, Homeworld 3, and remade Dead Space will also come out in 2023 (among others). They can’t all be top 10, this year is just too packed with hyped releases. Do watch out for more news, as there is a lot more to cover these 12 months.
