How to Play Teamfight Tactics: Newcomer’s Guide Walkthrough

9 min read 0 0

Many of us are familiar with the MOBA League of Legends. When a few years ago a mod called Auto Chess appeared in Dota 2, many companies realized that this genre attracts a lot of players, and making something similar on the basis of a MOBA project is even easier than it seems. Riot Games, the LoL developers, didn’t miss their chance and decided to create their own analog of chess. If you’re a newcomer in TFT, you need to know how to play correctly.

Simply put, it’s a strategy game in Autobattler mode, where users fight among themselves in a series of matches, putting their heroes on the battlefield. The winner is one who is the last survivor. Teams can be combined with each other, strengthened with various items, and placed correctly on the map to gain an advantage.

Autobattler is a relatively new genre that has incorporated the best of the dynamics and uniqueness of Battle Royale but has not missed the RPG elements.

The entire gameplay of Teamfight Tactics is divided into separate sessions. As in League of Legends, the user submits an application to participate in the match, after which the system selects opponents.

TFT is designed for 8 users, who fight against each other. At the start of the match, all players receive one of 8 soaring islands, which they decorate as they see fit before the match.

Each match consists of stages, which are divided into rounds. In each round, the player first buys champions into his supply and then places them on the battlefield in the desired order. The user is then randomly assigned an opponent and the battle begins. Exposed heroes fight automatically under the control of AI. The player whose champions kill all of the opponents is declared the winner of the round, and his enemy loses HP. If the user loses too many rounds and has no health left, he is eliminated from the match.

Teamfight Tactics Available Modes

Like other autobattlers, Teamfight Tactics has its own modes which allow users to not only familiarize themselves with the game elements and have fun but also to compete in the rankings by playing higher ranks.

All modes information:

Normal — the classic mode, where players don’t worry about ranking, raise their skill level, and just enjoy the process;

Ranked — mode, where the winner gets unique points and raises his rank, while the loser loses it. Since TFT is literally based on LoL, the ranking system is borrowed from there. There are 8 of them: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. You will get into matches with players of the same rank. You’ll have to play 5 test matches, which will determine your skill. You can’t lose the rank itself, but you can decrease the level, for example from 2 to 1. At the end of the season you will receive rewards, the quality, and quantity of which depends on your progress;

Hyperroll — unique mode which allows you to try an accelerated version of TFT. Players start with 20 health points, and receive double the amount of gold and extra experience, making the entire match go much faster. The mode is designed more for fun than for learning tactics. Hyperroll has its own ranking, where players also get ranks from Grey with 0 RP to Hyper with 4 200 and more RP;

Double Up! — the most distinctive mode in TFT, which only allows you to play in teams of 2. You can’t fight your opponent and have total health for the duration of the match. If your team wins faster, it goes to your ally’s aid. If you get a fatal blow the first time there will be 1 HP left to get the last chance and fight again. The most interesting thing about Double Up! is that players always gain and lose the least amount of RP, for example, if one has 80 RP and another has 10 RP, both will gain or lose 10 RP.

The modes in TFT not only allow you to compete for ratings but also to have fun with your friends. Hyperroll is a favorite of those who don’t want to waste time on a full match that can last longer than 30 minutes, while Double Up! allows you to team up with your mate or another random player in a fun way.

TFT Best Champions 2022 Tier List

Teamfight Tactics meta changes with updates, so you have to reconsider all the tactics that were used before and collect new combinations depending on what changes were made by the developers this time. Especially for the release of update 12.8, we have prepared the best champions tier list, where we collected them for early, mid and late game. To better understand their power, they have been divided into S, A, and B tiers.

S tier — the most powerful characters, which are worth buying at the first opportunity. They are the ones around which most combinations are built;

A tier — perfectly suited for almost all teams and are quite strong on their own;

Btier — quite specific, but still good if there are no other options.

Time and Stages Tier Champions
Early Game (Stages 1-2) S Ashe, Blitzcrank, Corki, Jarvan IV, Kassadin, Nocturne, Rek’Sai, Sejuani, Swain
A Brand, Camille, Darius, Ezreal, Illaoi, Lulu, Poppy, Singed, Warwick, Ziggs, Zilean, Zyra

A Cho’Gath, Ekko, Gangplank, Gnar, Irelia, Kai’Sa, Kha’Zix, Lucian, Orianna, Seraphine, Tahm Kench, Tryndamere, Zeri
B Malzahar, Miss Fortune, Senna

How was the tier list created?

Let’s take three characters — Ashe, Draven, and Kai’Sa, who are in demand throughout the match. Ashe has a huge chance to stay in the S tier permanently due to the huge number of syndicate buffs and nerfs of other teams. Draven has become more tempting with the release of 12.8, as other combinations have been weakened. Kai’Sa, on the other hand, has less perspective, although it can save even the toughest matches. It’s pretty hard to get into, but if you do, your chances to win will increase quite a lot.

Hextech Augments in TFT: How it Works?

At each stage, starting 1-3, 3-5, and 5-1, heroes have access to hextech augments that can dramatically change the game. It’s emblems, additions to items, characteristics of champs, and other enhancements. They are divided according to a certain principle, which depends on the levels: Silver, Gold, and Prismatic.

It’s enough to choose 1 of the 3 offered to get an augmentation. For more understanding it’s worth giving a couple of examples:

1. Silver augments — after 15 seconds of combat your units deal 100 percent more damage or your team is considered to have one additional Arcanist;

2. Gold augments — get an Arcanist emblem or your units heal 600 HP after defeat;

3. Prismatic augments — your team counts with two extra Academics or your team gets a +1 unit slot.

It’s a powerful boost and shouldn’t be overlooked. They can enhance champs, teams, or abilities, which greatly affects gameplay.

LoL Teamfight Tactics Strategy & Items

As all autobattlers, in TFT you need a strategy to win. It is built through the right selection of units and gear they carry. Without understanding the basics, you can’t make at least a simple team.

Every user in Teamfight Tactics has a cute friend. This is a Little Legend companion in which you move around the battlefield and use different emotions. Next comes the gold, experience, and levels you get. Almost the entire match depends on these parameters.

For gold you buy units, and experience allows you to gain levels that enable you to expand the number of spaces in the arena. A champion is a central unit. Each of them has a set of characteristics similar to those in League of Legends, as well as one special skill. Each champion has strengths and weaknesses, and positioning them correctly based on their characteristics, skills, and role is the key to victory. In addition to the usual characteristics, each unit belongs to a specific rank, class, and faction, as well as star level.

Rank determines the unit’s rarity and its cost, class, or faction set bonuses when multiple champs belonging to the same group are placed on the battlefield. The star level changes when a player accumulates 3 copies of the same unit. Each one has a bag and can hold up to 3 items. The champs are controlled by the AL, so the battle is fully automated.

All Little Legends receive 5 gold and an additional 10% of every 10 gold in their inventory, up to a maximum of 5 at the start of each planning. TFT has a lose streaks and win streaks system that allows you to get more gold:

Unlike League of Legends items, there are only two types of gear in TFT: basic and advanced. An improved gear is a combination of any two basic items. The champ’s inventory is shown below his health bar and is visible to all teams.

If a unit has one basic item in its inventory, then when you add other basic items, they will be combined into a certain enhanced one. Once 2 basics are assembled into 1 enhanced item, it is no longer possible to separate it back into its components. One champion can’t carry more than 3 improvements one at a time. If several champions are combined into one with a higher star level, then if a pair has basic items, they are combined into an improved one.
